Tommy Craig said:

It was very, very frustrating. We enjoyed most of the possession but we just couldn't convert it into goals. It's frustrating because we had a lot of invention in the team but we just couldn't seem to find that cutting edge and had to shoot from long range.

"Everything seemed to break down on the edge of the box for us. We have done well in a lot of games and scored a lot of goals but it just didn't happen for us last night.

"I really wanted to finish on a high before we have a break for Christmas and New Year and it would have been nice to have closed the gap on Aston Villa. They have had a phenomenal run but we won't be giving up."

N is for Nowt

Our headline refers not only to the deserved loss to the previously-winless home side, but also the fact that while warming up at half time, striker Richard Offiong managed to hit the metal letter "N" on the top of the stand at Telford, knocking it to the ground, much to the amusement of his fellow subs.

Unfortunately we'll never know whether his shooting was as wayward as alongside his colleagues, he barely mustered an effort worthy of the name in an instantly forgettable performance.

Two goals from Scotland's Kenny Miller gave Wolves their first Premier Reserve League victory of the season, completing a quartet of losses in the midlands this season for Tommy Craig's side.

And Newcastle only had themselves to blame on a chilly night at Telford's Bucks Head Stadium in front of a sparse crowd of long-suffering Wolves fans and local toon sympathisers.

Only a late effort from Ambrose gave the home 'keeper any challenge, with what other shots United could muster going high and wide. Both Viana and LuaLua should be ashamed of their profligate contributions - the former barely breaking out of a troy throughout the night, the latter jinking around the pitch to no great effect and the almost total exclusion of his colleagues.

Put simply, the team normally give a better account of them when there are less "names" in the side, and the usual reserves just get on with their jobs. Tommy Craig didn't say too much, but he must have simmered all the way home given the manner in which his second-place side slipped to defeat against a Wolves side who could hardly believe their luck. A poor way to end 2003 for the team. And fans.

3 mins Cooper for Wolves made his way beyond our defence down the left and test Bartlett with a shot that he parried.

8 mins LuaLua's short ball into Guy from right side of box gave the striker a yard to work with and he was able to pull the ball back past keeper towards the empty goal. However, Okoronkwo was on hand clear into the stand from the yard box. Viana took the resultant corner and LuaLua glanced a header wide. It didn't get much better than that.....

10 mins Either Gudjonsson had mucky legs or he was wearing grey tights despite being Icelandic! Within ten minutes he'd been fouled by Ambrose - perhaps he was trying to ladder his tights....

30 mins The home side took the lead after a long-range blast from Keith Andrews beat Bartlett but rebounded off the underside of the bar. Miller was the first to react and nodded home from 6 yards. 0-1

36 mins A speculative shot from LuaLua was unwitingly diverted wide by Andrews, with the 'keeper wrong-footed. Again the resultant corner was wasted.

38 mins Almost a costly error by defender Chris Carr, who lost out under pressure from Silas just outside the United area. The Portuguese striker made his way into the box as O'Brien and Bartlett went to him, The latter blocking the shot with his legs.

51 mins A strong Andrews run down right took him past Cave and his cross from the byline was beaten out by Bartlett but only to Miller. who slotted in from close range. 0-2

80 mins Silas twisted and turned past Griffin before unleashing a shot that beat Bartlett but not the crossbar.

83 mins our best chance of the night came as Ambrose cut in from the right and the keeper touched his strong shot onto the bar. As usual the following set-piece was a non-event.
