An inexperienced Newcastle reserve side came unstuck at an
almost-deserted St.Andrews on Wednesday, going down 3-1 to a Birmingham side
that included seven first-teamers.
It was a game of few chances with United mostly fighting a rearguard action but
neither 'keeper was really extended.
After six straight wins in the league, the Reserves have
now lost their last two games, following the 4-0 home defeat by Manchester
United.
Match highlights:
7 mins A clearance by
Taylor out of defence to Cort was deflected back towards the United penalty
area, falling to Morrison in a central position just outside the box. However
his first time effort passed harmlessly over Bartlett's crossbar.
12 mins Carter on the overlap into the left side of our area, but
Morrison was unable to direct his header on target when the short cross reached
him.
24 mins McClen gave the ball away cheaply in midfield to Morrison, who
set John away on goal. As United's defence reformed, Kirovski centred from the
right for Carter to try a first time effort, deflected wide for a corner.
29 mins from a rare Newcastle attack McClen was upended in the City half
by Carter. Ferrell sent in the resultant free kick and it flashed across the
edge of the six yard box with Cort trying in vain to make contact.
43 mins Williams concedes corner with long aimless back pass. Brittain
takes it and finds the head of Carr but he is off target.
44 mins Morrison sends an angled solo effort wide of the upright after
making a solo foray upfield, reacting first when McClen's free kick was charged
down.
In added time Motteram sent a low cross over for John to try a first time effort
from 12 yards that was blocked by the alert Taylor.
Ht 0-0
52 mins Carter was pushed out wide from our area towards Motteram on the
left. His curling cross from the byline found Morrison unmarked and he planted
his header goalwards, Bartlett getting both hands to it but being unable to
prevent the ball crossing the line. 0-1
59 mins Solo effort from John, racing on to flick on into rhs of our box,
dummying Taylor then curling his shot past Bartlett from 10 yards. 0-2
61 mins United struck back quickly with their first shot on target. A
long punt forward from Bartlett reached Cort and McClen took the ball on,
eventually playing it out to Brittain on the right. He quickly sent in a low
centre that Ferrell knocked from close range, with 'keeper Vaesen rooted to his
line. 1-2
66 mins United forward again through Cort, taking the ball cross field to
Brittain, who found Gate wide right on the overlap. His crossed to the near post
found Guy but his header didn't trouble the 'keeper.
72 mins low shot from outside the box from Kirovski was turned round the
post by Bartlett.
90 mins Cort's clever touch set him free of the City defence but he was
unable to steady himself as he made his way towards goal and blazed over.
Brave effort from United in the closing stages but no clear cut chances to
salvage a point.
91 mins Carter beat Bartlett with a low shot from outside the box. 1-3
