Tommy Craig said:
"We got our first
victory and when you look at the team we put out you would have expected that.
"To be fair to the boys they put in good shifts but we didn't really do
ourselves justice in front of goal. The number of times we were through one on
one on goal was quite incredible.
"We should have gone into half time leading 5-0 but as it was we led 1-0.
As long as it's 1-0 the other team's always got a chance and we desperately
wanted to add to our score.
"We didn't do that and hopefully it's the kick-start to our season. We're
very conscious that we're the major team in the Pontins League and everybody
wants to beat us.
"Hartlepool and Grimsby have already done that. We're a scalp for
them."
Solano fires home United's second
Our Pontins reserve side finally managed to
claim a win at the fifth attempt this season, away to Doncaster Rovers.
With over £20m-worth of transfers in the toon team, despite no less than seven
of our starting XI having come through the ranks, Newcastle dominated
proceedings without ever threatening an avalanche of goals.
In a game spoilt by the wind, both
Solano and Robert showed decent application and appeared to treat the game as a
genuine opportunity to sharpen up on their match fitness.
15 mins Newcastle took the lead with LuaLua shooting home from 16
yards after being played in by Solano. 1-0.
Robert is fouled ahead of Solano's goal
48 mins The visitors doubled their
advantage thanks to a long-range effort from Solano. Robert was fouled
about 30 yards from the Rovers goal and got up to touch the free kick sideways
for the Peruvian to drive home via an upright. 2-0
72 mins Rovers got one back through Ravenhill, with a curling shot from just
outside the area. 2-1
88 mins LuaLua rounded things off, turning to finish with a low effort from
an Orr through ball into the box. 3-1
