19 mins Carchedi free kick 0-1
24 mins Masaram shot 0-2
Half time: Newcastle 0 Grimsby 2
67 mins Jevons bicycle kick 0-3
Full time: Newcastle 0 Grimsby 3
Graham Rodger commented:
"Newcastle had in part a good side out there and we've put in a great performance. I don't want to single out any of our players because they've all played well."
Pontins misery part IV
with our man there describing the Newcastle performance as
"error-strewn" and only one effort of note on goal in the first- a
shot from Offiong just before the break that the 'keeper dealt with easily.
Things were slightly less grim for Newcastle in the second half, but for a
fourth successive game in this league, we were second best against an
inexperienced opposition side.
This is now getting beyond embarrassing - we failed to score in this league for
the first time and so far it's difficult to see any justification for us having
entered a team in the division. The irony is that these games are taking place
on the supposedly superior pitch at Whitley Park rather than the much-
criticised surface at Kingston Park, where the other reserve team have won two
out of three games.
19
mins Norton booked for fouling former Forest midfielder Giovanni Carchedi.
His free kick on the edge of our area hit the wall and Chopra was then booked
for again encroaching.
Carchedi had no such problems with his second attempt as he curled it round the
wall and in for a deserved Grimsby lead. Despite the exotic name, Carchedi is a
native of Lincoln. 0-1
24
mins striker Darren Mansaram picked up a loose ball 20 yards from
goal and cracked it over Bartlett. No more than the visitors deserved and
a decent solo effort from the 19 year-old former academy player. 0-2
54 Mins Jevons crossed from left, Orr diverted the ball on to crossbar. From
corner, Ferrell cleared a goalbound effort.
62 mins Gate shot narrowly over bar.
65 mins The best toon move of the game as O'Brien went down the left and
Chopra's effort was blocked.
67
mins Bartlett was forced to make a one-handed save to deny former Everton
hitman Phil Jevons. From the resultant corner however, Jevons
acrobatically powered home the third goal with a bicycle kick. 0-3
73 mins Bartlett had to be on his toes to deny Jevons again.
80 mins From Brittain's right wing cross, Offiong failed to convert from
close range but when Ferrell did get the ball in the net, he was rightly
adjudged offside.
