A Newcastle XI were in action at Chester-le-Street Riverside on Wednesday in a fundraising fixture for the Mary Hayton Cancer Research UK Memorial Fund, set up by friends and relatives of Mary, who recently passed away.

And in a match played as two forty-minute halves, a Magpies side composed of younger reserve players and coaching staff etc. provided those present with value for money and gave the Sacriston lads a memorable night.

However, victory for Newcastle came at a price - in the 35th minute the match was held up as United's James Haycock sustained a broken leg in an accidental clash with an opponent. First to attend to him was physio Derek Wright, who was close at hand when the incident occurred.

After treatment on the field, the unfortunate Haycock was stretchered off and accompanied to hospital by Wright.

PS - With the game scoreless after 5 minutes, Andy Ferrell was upended in the Sacriston box for an undisputed penalty. However our physio, former Arsenal player Derek Wright, showed he'd been watching the first team too closely - by blasting his spot kick over the crossbar.

Grateful thanks to Alan Candlish
