Tommy Craig commented:
"All that was lacking
in the first half was goals because we had plenty of possession and looked
purposeful."
"I was disappointed
to come in a goal down at half time and I said to the lads that if they kept
their shape and discipline then I felt we would win the game.
"But, unfortunately,
we went on to play as individuals rather than as a team, we gave the ball away
and we got sloppy and Hartlepool punished us.
"Pool made it
difficult but we didn't do ourselves any favours because the service to our two
front men, Carl Cort and Lewis Guy, was poor in the second-half.
"We got the goal late
on but when you're three goals down at that stage you have a mountain to climb.
But I must say I felt the attitude and application, which I questioned against
Darlington last week, was first class and I have no complaints on that
score."
Pools reserve coach said of scorer Foley:
“He is a good lad.
“I thought at times he looked mentally tired in the game and it is understandable because a lot had happened to him in twenty-four hours, but his finish was exceptional.
“I am really pleased at the moment because on top of a good First Team result on Monday, the Reserves have performed. The commitment and work rate against Newcastle was a mirror-image of the what the First Team lads have been doing.”
After faltering to a home draw
with the reserves of Division Three Darlington last week,
things got worse for our Pontins league side as Hartlepool's
second string inflicted a 3-1 defeat on us at Victoria Park on
Tuesday afternoon.
It
was a case of red shirts, red faces for the reserves as we
appeared in an unfamiliar red and black strip, which turned out
to be the shorts and socks of our current away strip plus
Hartlepool's current away top.
The referee asked for this in view of the fact him and his
officials wore black.
The visitors made the early running, with Cort spurning four
chances in the opening half hour, including one header which
struck the 'Pools crossbar.
However the Division Two side grabbed a 36th minute lead when
Jermaine Easter broke down the right before finding South-
Shields-born
youth striker David Foley. He took a touch before
sweeping the ball over the advancing Smith from about 8 yards - a memorable goal
for a 16
year-old toon fan to score...
Newcastle reappeared for the second half with the same outfield
side, but a replacement goalkeeper in the shape of Adam Collin.
He was powerless to prevent the home side doubling their
advantage on 65 minutes, when Easter shot home following
a Robinson corner that the Magpies failed to deal with.
Things went from bad to worse five minutes later, as a
non-existent offside trap from the visitors allowed the
highly-rated Adam Boyd to advance unchallenged and beat
Collin in a one v one.
Newcastle got one back in the 73rd minute when Carl Cort
finally converted, bundling the ball home from close range after
Williams couldn't hold a shot from fellow striker Lewis Guy.
With a third striker, Calvin Zola on for the final 14 minutes,
Newcastle tried in vain to claw back some honour, but the
nearest they came was a Zola effort in the 85 minute after a
goalmouth scramble that was adjudged offside.
And things could have been even more embarrassing for the
Premiership representatives, had a long-range effort from ex-toon
reserve Paul Arnison not flown wide.
Unlike last week, Sir Bobby wasn't in attendance as he had a
prior engagement with the press in Newcastle, but when news from
Hartlepool reaches him he's hardly likely to be pleased.
