A friendly match played in front of a decent crowd at a sun-drenched Whitley Park, giving the Northern Alliance title favourites their highest crowd of the season, unless they draw the Magpies in the Senior Cup.

The game went pretty much the way one expects these things to, with initial resistance from the non-league side breached at reasonably regular intervals once the first one had gone in.

For Newcastle fans it was heartening to see Lewis Guy in prolific pre-season form, almost a year to the day that he'd injured himself in a friendly at North Shields. That incident was to sideline him for half the season and see him playing catch up thereafter, although he did enjoy some success in front of goal when drafted in to the reserve side.

Having not wanted the season to end, Guy was quickly into his stride again and will doubtless be looking for regular action in one of our two reserve teams this season to kickstart his international career and fulfil the potential that has seen him contracted to the club until 2005.
