We Said

Tommy Craig said:

"It was a good workout. It was good to build the fitness levels, although some of the players started to blow a bit towards the end. It was good to score a couple of goals and get a win but if Berwick had taken a couple of their chances it might have been a much different game.

"The pitch at Berwick is conducive to good football and it was a good game - I liked the attitude of both the young and experienced players.

"Calvin Zola Makongo played well in the first half and Lewis Guy has this habit of coming on in reserve games and scoring goals."

The returning Gary Caldwell told the Chronicle:

"That was my first game for Newcastle in a year and a half and I enjoyed it. I thought we played well and fitness wise I felt OK.

"And it's good to be back at the club. The new training ground's opened since I left and that's very impressive. I think the coaching staff will see a different player. I'm a lot more mature and I know a lot more about the game.

"I'm a lot more experienced and a much better player than the one who left on loan. Now it's up to me to show the gaffer that. I've got to work hard and hopefully I'll get my chance, though I know there's a lot of competition at the club."

They Said

Paul Smith said:

"I felt the first (goal) came from an offside position, but for the second I have to say we were asleep. But it was a good work-out and we achieved in the match what we set out to do."

Waffle

Making his first appearance of the season, England Youth International Lewis Guy scored two second half goals at Shielfield to hand Newcastle reserves their first pre-season victory, at the third attempt.

In front of a disappointing crowd of just over 500, there wasn't much to choose between either side in the opening half, with United's strike force of Zola and Offiong seeing their shooting attempts either drift wide or go straight to Neil Inglis in the Rangers goal.

Guy replaced Offiong after the break and became United's three minute hero in the 48th minute, when he latched to a Zola pass to beat the keeper from just inside the box, with home defenders appealing vainly for offside.

The England youth international then claimed his second midway through the half when Robbie Elliott was fouled and from the quick free-kick raced into the left hand side of the box to drove a low shot home from an acute angle.

Rangers made a number of substitutions and almost reaped an instant reward on 62 minutes when John McAllister spotted Caig off his line and with his first touch of the ball attempted to lob him from 25 yards, only narrowly clearing the crossbar.

Within two minutes defender Steven Taylor was handily placed to block a Gordon Forrest effort from close range, as Berwick worked their way into the United box, after another less-than-convincing challenge from Acuna.

Tony Caig, who looked as if he'd spent the summer getting in trim, was called into action again in the closing stages, palming over another good effort from Mark McCormick with four minutes to go.

Clarence keeps his distance

PS - In keeping with the Scottish League tradition, the identity of Berwick's late sub wasn't revealed, as he was a trialist.

PPS - Only the truly odd would appreciate the Berwick team lining up as number 8 Forrest, number 9 Wood.
