We Said

 Tommy Craig said:

"It was a good game played in poor conditions.

"The wind was howling as it often does at Kingston Park but both sides made it quite a good game. It was enjoyable for those that were there. Both sides were very young and when that happens you usually get a competitive game and that's hot it turned out.

"I felt we could have nicked it at the end as we had one or two chances."

They Said

Reserve team coach Hughie McAuley said:

"We're disappointed in as much as I thought the lads worked very, very hard, in difficult conditions and for long periods we deservedly we survived the 1-0.

"Unfortunately we got a little bit slack at the end and we paid the penalty with a ball played in that we really should have cleared, but we'll learn from that.

(Patrice Luzi) "is a very confident young lad and he's developing very nicely. He's brave and very commanding in the penalty area and he's started to dictate to the back four where he wants them.

(Robbie Foy "is sharp and he gets on the end of balls he's prepared to move forward and when he's not on the ball he puts people under tremendous pressure. He's developing quite nicely."

Waffle

Ormskirk-born Stephen Warnock opened the scoring for the Reds but midfielder Andy Ferrell levelled with eight minutes remaining with his first competitive goal at this level. For detail freaks, his brother is called Neil - but not that one....

Midweek European commitments for both clubs meant two less experienced sides lining up at Kingston Park. With Ameobi and LuaLua in Italy the senior striking role fell to Michael Chopra, who returned to goalscoring form on the same ground last week with a brace against West Bromwich Albion.

Chops left the field with a twisted ankle but is not thought to be seriously injured.

Ineligible for Europe, 'keeper Tony Caig made his fourth reserve appearance for the club, while there were reserve league debuts for Academy U19 duo of Martin Brittain and James Beaumont - congratulations to both of them.

For the record, the second string have now used 43 players this season, with another 9 called up to the bench but still to feature on the field. This compares to figures of 39 and 8 respectively last season.
