34 mins 1-0 Cort Half time: Sheff Weds 0 Newcastle Reserves 1
Tommy Craig commented:
Carl Cort thumped a 34th minute opener to give United the half-time advantage. Christian Bassedas played a through ball to Cort, just onside, on the edge of the Wednesday box. Although Michael Chopra was close at hand, Cort took a step before rifling the ball home. Richard Offiong was brought down in the last minute and got up to score from the penalty spot to seal the victory. Defender John Beswetherick was given a straight red card for the foul. United could have scored more but the home side battled well. Bradley Orr left the field with what looked like a nasty ankle injury and was replaced by Andy Ferrell. Viewing from the stands was new Wednesday boss,
Chris Turner, and perennial Toon Stiffs watcher, Oldham boss, Iain
Dowie. Biffa |
