11 mins League
leaders Villa took the lead after just 11 minutes when a long punt upfield found
Peter Crouch surrounded by four defenders in a central position on the
edge of the area. The gangling striker headed it up and over the stranded Adam
Collin for a classic route one goal
0-1
18 mins United equalised when Jamie McClen picked up a loose ball midway
in our half and knocked it wide right to Offiong who did well to shrug off the
defender and send over a low cross. Michael Chopra stretched and poked a shot
from ten yards onto the right hand post. The ball hit the post and then went in
off the back of the prone keeper, Stefan Postma 1-1
25 mins Villa restored their
lead after 25 minutes when Steve Davis caught out Collin with a 20 yarder
2-1
45 mins On
the stroke of half-time Chopra got our second with a stunning low shot
after turning skilfully in central midfield following a pass from Marcelino.
Chops found the left hand corner of the net with a howitzer from 22 yards 2-2
Half time: Newcastle Reserves 2
Villa 2
76 mins Forgotten man Diego
Gavilan got the winner after 76 minutes after good work down the right from
substitute Zola. His cross was hit home from the edge of the box by Gavilan with
the outside of his right foot, making up for the three earlier misses from the
Paraguayan.
3-2
Full time: Newcastle Reserves 3
Villa 2
Tommy Craig said:
"I was delighted with the football we played throughout the team
though we gave them two goals. We always looked a threat.
"Everyone
put in a good shift and looking ahead to the Kiev game I took Michael off just
in case he is in the gaffer's thoughts for Kiev.
"He
conjured a goal up out of nothing. He's able to feed off good service but can
also do exciting things like that.
"His
education is continuing and he's learning a lot. He's striving for the next
level."
Villa coach
Kevin Macdonald paused on his way back to the coach to say:
"It was a disappointing way to lose our unbeaten record. We’ve played
very well this season, but that was not one of our better performances.”
Tommy Craig's Reserves managed to get their
first home win of the season as they overcame previously unbeaten league leaders
Aston Villa in another entertaining night at the International Stadium.
That's now 21 goals in 4 home reserve games this season, 10
for the home side and some decent football for the hardy souls who turn out and
watch the second string, as well as a couple of memorable strikes.
Chopra was withdrawn on the hour to great
applause, and may well have played his way on to the seven-man bench for the
Kiev game.
Elsewhere there was the usual committed performance from McClen, in complete
contrast to the ineffectual touches of Bassedas - now certainly among the worst
value buys of the modern age.
Both full backs did their best to augment the attack and Brennan in particular
improved as the game went on, although he was perhaps fortunate to escape in the
final seconds, when the referee gave him the benefit of the doubt over a
handball in the Newcastle penalty area.
But it was Chopra again who looked the star of the show - his touch and movement
looking impressive and deserving of an audience far bigger than this one.
Another belting goal won't have done his cause any harm either - his 6th in 5
appearances this season at this level.
Mention must also be made of his partner Richard Offiong, who seems to have
built up his physique lately but still put in two lightning sprints in the
second half to beat his opponent to the ball - never knew he was that fast!
Finally Calvin Zola came on and did his part as the lads held on for the
deserved three point maximum, even if one bloke in the stand did think it was
Cort, despite the clear PA announcement and teamsheet lineup.....
This is all in stark contrast to the lanky beanpole Crouch, who followed up a
goal for the first team last season against us with the opener tonight. However
he'll be remembered for the incredible miss just after the half hour when his
side were 2-1 ahead and another goal could have been critical.
Edwards found space down the Villa right and crossed for Crouch who was no more
than three yards out. With Collin floundering and no defenders within reach, the
Villa striker contrived to lift his well effort over the crossbar - a virtually
impossible feat.
