Craig commented:
United took to the field wearing last season's blue away kit as the rain started to fall at Feetham's. The home side took the lead after 28 minutes when Wainwright shot home after a deflected shot fell to him in the area leaving Karelse with no chance. There weren't many chances in the opening half of an even contest with our main threat coming from Alan O'Brien down the left. Darlo's best man was Valentine - their new capture from Everton. After the break the rain came down even heavier with the floodlights being needed to penetrate the gloom. Like
at North Shields, it was a better second half for us but the
deserved draw never materialised. Steven Taylor looked comfortable
and we had some efforts from distance but lacked a bit of presence up
front. North Shields
absentee, Jon Karelse, was in the line-up but injury victim Lewis
Guy will be out for six weeks.
