31 mins Andy Bowman opened the

former Newcastle junior was on the spot to knock the ball into an empty
net after the bounce deceived the keeper. 0-1
37 mins Bowman
got his second bundling the ball over the line from close range following a
corner, with Newcastle defenders looking questioningly at each other. 0-2

Tommy
Craig commented:
"We didn't take
our chances in the first half and some sloppy errors meant we were up
against it going into the interval.
"We were muscled out in certain areas of the pitch which I was
disappointed about but out superb fitness allowed us to come back."
A
very young Reserve side fought back from a three goal deficit at
Ralph Gardner Park as the 2002/03 season got underway with a
friendly match in North Tyneside.
In a disorganised first half display, the Wearside League side
were on top as Newcastle struggled to find any rhythm,
but as if often the case in these games the second half was a
different story.
The Robins did well to keep going after the break but gradually
ran out of steam after the hour mark as Newcastle woke up and
the visitors almost snatched victory in te last seconds. However young England
prospect Lewis Guy was carried off with what looked like a damaged right
ankle after straining to reach a cross in the Shields box.
Despite being included in the
squad, fit-again keeper Jon Karelse was nowhere to be seen
while
interested onlookers included local lad and victorious U17 England
captain (see below) Steven Taylor, watching
from the sidelines with his old man. Also watching were Shields
Honorary President, Malcolm Macdonald, Peter Beardsley, John
Carver and Andy Griffin.
