5 mins
Jamie
Coppinger latched onto a McClen through ball. Coppinger cut inside,
shaped to shoot, dummied the keeper and then had his shot blocked. Gavilan
shot from the rebound but that was also blocked before Coppinger finally
knocked it in from 12 yards. 1-0
10 mins After Dixon's
initial effort had been blocked by a Newcastle defender, Jason Wilcox's
hit a low effort from the edge of the penalty area that flew just inside
Karelse's right hand post. 1-1
31 mins A classic air shot from
Karelse saw McClen's backpass trickle into the goal with Singh
following but not touching the ball before it crossed the line. 1-2
40 mins Harpal Singh started the
move, which also involved Hackworth and Wilcox, whose low driven cross
from the left was met by by Singh sliding through the mud to force
it in. 1-3
Half time: Leeds 3 Newcastle 1
90 mins
After holding out for the whole of the second half, ten man United finally
succumbed when Simon Johnson exploited a gap in the United defence and
take the ball past an oncoming Grindlay to walk it into the net 1-4
Full time:
Leeds 4 Newcastle 1
5 mins A
lengthy stoppage as Karelse received treatment at pitchside for a
foot problem. He had injured himself moments earlier when rushing
out of his area to hoof the ball clear as Burns attacked.
8 mins Newcastle took the lead (see above)
10 mins Leeds levelled (see above)
17 mins Good work from Karelse as an outswinging corner from Wilcox
was headed goalwards by Hackworth. The 'keeper palmed away the effort for
a third successive corner, which was wasted by Leeds.
21 mins A timely headed clearance from McGuffie from another
dangerous Wilcox centre denied Leeds again at the expense of a corner.
When the ball was pumped in again, McPhail got his shot on target but
Karelse was able to tip it round a post.
24 mins Probably the move of the season from this team as
McClen, McGuffie and Gavilan swashbuckled down the field and towards the
Leeds goal with a succession of brilliantly-executed first time passes.
Finally, Coppinger joined the move and dragged his shot agonisingly wide
of the post to ruin a passage of perfect play.
26 mins Gavilan and Hackworth clashed on the halfway line and after
the Leeds player had impeded the Newcastle man. Gavilan reacted angrily
with an attempted elbow on his opponent, which failed to connect. The
referee waved play on but the lineman flagged furiously and the game was
halted. After a short consultation the referee waved over Gavilan and
showed him the red card (he hadn't been booked previously). However, he
chose not even to speak to Hackworth, which prompted furious protests from
the adjacent Newcastle bench, led by Tommy Craig.

Half
time: Leeds 3 Newcastle 1
53 mins Dixon of Leeds hit the
crossbar with a long-range effort in front of the David Longhurst stand.
55 mins The game threatened to descend into a kicking party, with
Glass, McMenamin and Gary Caldwell all involved in separate clashes with
Leeds players in the space of ten seconds or so. The final incident saw
Caldwell appeal to the linesman as Hackworths brutal challenges on him
went unpunished.
58 mins Despite their numerical
disadvantage, Newcastle had failed to concede further during the initial
second-half burst and now enjoyed a good amount of possession. McGuffie
broke forward and was supported by Bonvin, who had his legs swiped from
under him just outside the box. Boyd's resultant effort from the freekick
however was well wide.
61 mins Further excursions upfield from the visitors, as McClen
found space down the left wing and sent over a dent cross to Bonvin, who
directed his header well wide.
63 mins An indication of the farcical nature of the evening was
provided by Bonvin, as he attempted to dribble into the Leeds area, only
to be stopped in his tracks by an area of pitch resembling a quicksand on
the right edge of the field. Unconfirmed reports suggest that the
diminutive Clint Marcelle disappeared into this area the previous week
when playing for Darlo, and was never seen again.
78 mins Stand-in keeper Stephen Gindlay drew the applause of the
crowd when he raced off his line to boot the ball clear, after substitute
Johnson had eluded Beharall and slipped a dangerous pass through to the
marauding Maybury.
79 mins From Gary Caldwell's free kick in the centre of the field,
the ball was switched left to McClen who advanced on goal only to sweep
his shot harmlessly past the far post of the Leeds goal.
81 mins A great stop from Grindlay as he turned a shot from Johnson
round the post. The chance actually arose from a Newcastle corner that
Gary Caldwell had two attempted shots from, before the ball broke kindly
for the home side to break.
89 mins A good save was again required from Grindlay to prevent
Wilcox from claiming a second goal, again from distance.
90 mins

Nowt! No quotes from a tight-lipped
Tommy Craig.
A night when little went right for the
Toon right from the off, with an injury to Karelse merely the first of
number of unforeseen problems to befall Craig's men. Although the big
Dutchman was clearly in pain and sub keeper Grindlay went through an
extended warm-up, Newcastle chose to wait until the interval before making
the required change. By then of course Gavilan had already left the field
for the final time after a bit of daftness that the referee initially
ignored.
By the time of the fourth Leeds goal, the pitch had three or four areas that were almost
unplayable, which didn't help matters. Despite this, the Magpies at least
battled throughout and gave Leeds more of a game than many other visitors
to Bootham Crescent this season.
Such was the catalogue of disasters throughout the evening that little can
be taken from this game, although toon fans present witnessed the rare
event of Dimas tackling an opponent not once but twice. Norris McWhirter
has been informed.
