Season Match Reports 2000-01 - Darlington (h) |
Newcastle United Reserves 2 Darlington XI 0
Crowd: 4. Referee: tbc. Teams: NUFC: Karelse,
Boyd (Brady 41 mins*), Ullathorne, Kerr, McGuffie, G.Caldwell,
Green, Bonvin (Boyd 64 mins), Coppinger, Gavilan, Dimas.
Waffle: The first half was notable only for a 3rd minute chip from Bonvin which the Darlo keeper tipped over the bar. Seven minutes into the second half, United took the lead when Coppinger made a powerful run down the right, beat the fullback and, rather unusually for him, looked up, and picked out Pedro Dimas ten yards out. The young Portuguese winger hit it first time into the net. Three minutes later former United youngster Jordan Tait was replaced at
fullback in the Darlington team. It was then considered that Bonvin had done enough and he went off after 24 minutes to be replaced by Mark Boyd who had only earlier gone off himself. (It was only a friendly after all.) All in all a comfortable enough win, which was only to be expected against a team of much lower standing in the league. Among the Darlington officials,
one Jimmy Montgomery formerly goalkeeping coach at Newcastle, and oh yes,
he once got cuddled on the Wembley pitch when
playing for some other team.
