10
weeks after last season ended with a 0-2 FA Cup Final defeat at the hands of
Arsenal, Kenny Dalglish's Newcastle side began their preparations in Dublin's
Fair City.
A low-key first half almost began in spectacular style, when debutant winger
Garry Brady sent over a cross from the left for Nicos Dabizas to rattle
crossbar with a shot.
United thought they'd gone ahead towards the end of a low-key opening half,
when Bohs new boy Brendan Place conceded a
free kick outside the box after dragging over Paul Dalglish.
Gary Speed's set piece was deflected en route to Michael Dempsey and although
the 'keeper got a hand to it, he couldn't keep hold of the ball and Brady
tucked away the rebound - only for the referee to rule it out for pushing by
Warren Barton.
Barton himself headed against the goal frame just before the hour mark, before
the introduction of Ralf
Keidel brought an instant breakthrough for the visitors. The German U21
midfielder had been on the field for barely two minutes before he took a pass
from John Barnes and shot past Dempsey.
Within five minutes though Bohs were level though Derek Swan fouled in the box
and getting up to beat substitute custodian Lionel Perez from the resultant
penalty kick.
