Newcastle took full advantage of their Premier
League game in hand by ripping apart the Eagles at St. James' Park on
Wednesday evening.
With Eddie Howe still unavailable, Jason Tindall and
Graeme Jones again took charge as an unchanged side extended their winning
run to six games and made it a dozen goals scored in just three
outings.
Jacob Murphy and Harvey Barnes did the damage for United flying down both
wings during an amazing first half when the hosts netted four times but also
missed a further trio of presentable chances.
Jacob Murphy set his side on their way after 14 minutes with a fabulous pile
driver finish from the right wing reminiscent of Sandro Tonali's Brentford
blaster.
That pulsating
opening period could have been very different though, had Nick Pope not saved a
36th minute penalty to prevent Palace from levelling the game.
The 'keeper made amends for racing off his line to wipe out Chris Richards
with a ridiculous challenge that was penalised by a spot kick after an
onfield VAR check.
Pope's atonement was aided by one of the worst spot-kicks in living memory, Eberechi Eze's
run-up more statuesque than stuttering and his shot barely making it the 12
yards distance to the grateful custodian.
Seconds later it was 2-0 when Harvey Barnes broke down the left and his
intended cross ended up in the back of the net after deflecting in off Marc Guehi's
arm - the Palace defender registering his second own goal in Newcastle's
favour this season.
That passage of play prompted memories of a 5-1 win over Carlisle United back in
Easter 1984, home 'keeper Kevin Carr saving Alan Shoulder's penalty at the
Leazes End before the Magpies broke straight upfield for Kevin Keegan to nod
home a deflected goal.
Barnes netted in first half added time with a well-taken effort to end a
sweeping move from one end of the pitch to the other after
Tonali had played him through.
That was swiftly followed by a fourth before the break; Murphy once again
supplying an accurate cross following a free kick for Fabian Schar to deftly
flick home with his
head into the corner of the Gallowgate net.
The Magpies started the second half in similar fashion and a fifth goal
arrived on 58 minutes when Joelinton won the ball off Maxence Lacroix and
set up Alexander Isak to curl home from the edge of the box - a fine finish
from what was his hardest chance of the night.
That ended a run of 12 goals scored by Newcastle since the Swede had
registered, on a night where he could easily have had another hat-trick.
From then on, the black and whites cruised to victory and kept a
clean sheet despite slackening off their pressure on the Palace goal after
making the full allowable number of replacements.
Victory saw Newcastle go third in the table, four points behind Arsenal and
five ahead of sixth placed Chelsea.
Their +21 goal difference is also superior to the sides occupying fourth,
fifth and sixth.
Team: Pope, Trippier (Krafth 79), Schar,
Burn, Livramento, Guimaraes (Longstaff 72), Murphy (Gordon 62), Tonali,
Joelinton (Willock 62), Barnes, Isak (Wilson 72).
Subs n/u: Dubravka, Targett, Miley, Osula.
Booked: Burn, Guimaraes.
Joelinton avoided a booking meaning that the threat of an automatic two match ban for
amassing 10 cautions in the Premier League has now been lifted.
He is technically still in with a chance of a three game suspension for
reaching 15 PL yellow cards - but would need to be booked in all six
remaining games to do so.
Goals: J.Murphy 14, OG(Guehi) 38, Barnes 45+2, Schar 45+8, Isak 58.
CPFC: Henderson, Richards, Lacroix, Guehi, Nketiah, Munoz, Lerma (Devenny
85), Hughes (Wharton 57), Mitchell, Sarr (Esse 76), Eze (Kamada 57), Mateta
(Nketiah 57).
Subs n/u: Turner, Chilwell, Clyne, Franca.
Booked: Hughes, Lerma, Munoz.
Crowd: 52,197 including around 900 travellers.
Former Magpie Imre Varadi was present.
After the game Jason Tindall said:
"We spoke pre game about maintaining the standards we set ourselves at
the weekend, about being really aggressive and on the front foot. I thought
the players went about that and executed that brilliantly.
"We've got a fantastic squad and the balance of the team has been great.
We've got some players on the bench who can come on the pitch and make a
difference. We're confident, we've had a good run of results and we have to
remain level headed and work hard every day to go out and deliver
performances.
"We need to make sure we remain focused and level-headed. We've got a
tough game now against Aston Villa, who are in great form and have only lost
one game at home all season. We know it's going to be a really difficult
performance."
On scoring nine goals in two
games:
"It's good, if you had said that a week ago, then I probably wouldn't
have believed you. Full credit to the lads for delivering the two
performances they have, but don't stop there.
"We have six cup finals remaining. We have to be consistent and deliver
the right performances to get us into the Champions League."
On winning the Carabao Cup:
"That gave us huge confidence, we went out and delivered a performance
against arguably one of the best teams in Europe in Liverpool.
"We were able
to enjoy that for a period of time but we knew what our objectives were for
the remainder of the season - to finish as high up the league table as
possible.
"The manager always leads and sets that example of never switching
off. They've gone out there, been really consistent and delivering
performances.
On speaking to Eddie Howe:
"I think at a time like this the most important thing is your health, that
you rest and recover. We wish Eddie all the best and the more he can rest
the sooner he'll be back."
On Champions League qualification:
"That's where we want to get to. Everybody in the Premier League wants to be
in the champions league. We've experienced it before and we want more of it.
"We've got six cup finals now remaining and we have to stay focused to be
able to go out there and deliver the performances we know will help us to
get Champions League."
Referee: Darren England - a third appointment so far this
season involving the Magpies for the official from Doncaster, following our
1-1 PL draw at Selhurst Park and the 3-0 PL home victory over Wolves.
VAR: Craig Pawson
Stats:
The Magpies won by five clear goals for the first time since the 8-0 PL
success at Sheffield United in September 2023. It's their largest
home win since the 6-1 PL conquest of Spurs during April 2022.
Newcastle scored four goals in the first half of a PL game for the
second time this season, also doing so in the 4-3 home win over Nottingham
Forest in February.
With six games left, United's tally of 59 points is just one
less than they managed in the full 2023/24 season.
Anthony Gordon completed a century of league and cup games
for the club (79 starts).
Kieran Trippier made his 100th start for the Magpies in all
competitions.
Tino Livramento made his 50th start in all competitions since joining
Newcastle.
Jacob Murphy registered his 19th strike for Newcastle in the
PL, one less than Bruno Guimaraes.
Harvey Barnes now has 14 PL goals for United, a total level with
current colleague Joe Willock and ex-Magpie Loic Remy.
Fabian Schar scored his 17th Newcastle PL goal, matching the
total of Yohan Cabaye and moving one behind team mate Anthony Gordon.
Alexander Isak scored his 25th club goal so far this season in
all competitions, matching his 2023/24 total.

United U19s endured a difficult afternoon in the Cotton Bowl on Sunday, as
they commenced their Dallas Cup participation with defeat by Sao Paulo.
The Brazilian side were beginning the defence of their Super Group title and
went ahead within 90 seconds, only to then concede a seventh minute penalty
that Kasey Wooster dragged wide of the target.
Sao Paulo then doubled their lead after 16 minutes in blazing sunshine and
it was 0-3 by the 38th minute.
Into the second period and a free kick conversion from distance increased
United's agony and it was 0-5 on the hour, the scoring thankfully complete

Thursday evening saw Chelsea win the first

in Poland.
Assuming no unforeseen turnaround in this Thursday's second leg, Enzo

Confirmation of the date and KO time of United's away game against Arsenal
is still to be announced by the Premier League. Their own published deadline for
doing so was Friday April 4th.....
No PL games will be played on Sat 17.05.2025 to avoid clashing with the FA

Milestone reached:
more funds needed
Former Magpie Alan Shearer appeared on BBC Breakfast last week
here as the
charity fundraising efforts of his foundation smashed through the £7m
barrier.
Those funds helped establish The Alan
Shearer Centre, offering support to over 5,000 people
in the region with profound disabilities and acute sensory impairments.
The running costs of that facility have now rocketed from £250K to £320K
annually, meaning that Wor Al is now calling for additional support from the
public:
"I founded the Alan Shearer Foundation to make a real difference to
the lives of people with a wide range of abilities and complex needs.
"To keep the activity centre free for our members, we now need to raise
an additional £70,000 every year.
"The funds raised enable our members and their families to access
life-enhancing therapies like hydrotherapy and sensory play without
increased strain on family finances.
"Every donation, fundraising event and contribution — however big or
small — helps us to maintain and grow these vital facilities and ensures
that people get the care and experiences they deserve.
"We need to do more if we are to help and support families who require
specialist care facilities.”

Shearer Foundation here

Defender extension
details emerge
The Athletic report that Jamaal Lascelles has agreed a
contract extension that will keep him at SJP until summer 2026, not 2025 as
was previously assumed.
It's claimed that a deal for an additional 12 months was done late last
year, but no official announcement has yet come from the player or
club.
The 31 year-old defender joined United from Nottingham Forest back in 2014,
making the first of 251 league and cup appearances in September 2015.
Suffering an ACL injury during a home victory over West Ham in March 2024,
Lascelles is yet to kick a ball this season but has recently returned to
training.

16th April |
Born Or Died:
1960 Rafael Benitez Maudes born, Madrid, Spain. (Manager, 2016-19)

Two months after leaving his post in charge of Real Madrid,
relegation-haunted United turned to Rafa Benitez as a replacement for Steve
McClaren.
Benitez had begun his football career at the Bernabeu aged 13 but failed to
graduate to the seniors side and left in 1981.
Playing for lower league outfits AD Parla and CF Linares, a recurring knee
problem saw Rafa forced into retirement in 1986.
Completing his degree in physical education and supporting himself by working
as a PE teacher at schools in Madrid and Linares.
Beginning his coaching career with Castilla's youth team, Benitez moved on to
serve Real Madrid at various youth levels between 1989 and 1993 before a
season as assistant to first team boss Vicente Del Bosque.
Taking charge of Real's B Team, Rafa then became head coach of Real
Valladolid, moving on to Osasuna (briefly) and then Extremadura - gaining
promotion to the top flight with the latter in 1997.
Promotion with Tenerife came in 2001, after which he joined Valencia and
steered them to La Liga success in his first season.
A further title and a UEFA Cup success followed in three seasons at the
Mestalla, before a first taste of the Premier League - replacing Gerard
Houllier at Liverpool.
Six seasons at Anfield failed to deliver a league title, but Rafa did secure
the Champions League in 2005 and the FA Cup 12 months later.
His next stop was the San Siro, where an association with Inter Milan resulted
in the acquisition of one Italian Super Cup and one FIFA World Club Cup.
A second stab at the Premier League saw Benitez succeed Roberto Di Matteo at
Chelsea on a fixed term deal, but he was unpopular with many of their fans
despite a Europa League Final success in 2013.
Swapping Stamford Bridge for Napoli, two years in Italy resulted in the
Italian Super Cup and the Coppa Italia heading to the Stadio San Paolo.
An offer of the Head Coach role at Real Madrid in June 2015 proved impossible
for Rafa to resist, but his return to the Bernabeu lasted barely seven months.
Bringing coaches Fabio Pecchia, Antonio Gómez Pérez and Francisco de Míguel
Moreno with him, Benitez then took charge of United for the first time in
early March 2016 - a 0-1 defeat at Leicester City.
His 56th birthday brought a first victory at the fifth time of asking - 3-0
over Swansea City at Gallowgate - but a revival under his guidance couldn't
avoid relegation.
A remarkable 5-1 defeat of Spurs on the final day of the season proved to be
pivotal, the support from the stands cited by Benitez as a reason for signing
a three year deal.
Promotion and the Championship title came followed, and United retained top flight status with a 2-1
home win over Arsenal
the eve of his 58th birthday.
Rafa's 59th in 2019 was spent similarly, having just won at Leicester City to
reach 38 points and almost certain safety.
A failure agree a new deal after season's end saw Benitez leave, taking charge
of Chinese Super League club Dalian Wifang
(later renamed Professional).
A sensational return to Tyneside in 2020 was claimed as rumours of a Saudi-based
takeover of the club emerged.
Instead, a forgettable season at Dalian ended with Rafa's exit in January 2021
- becoming Everton boss that June to the horror of some Toffees fans.
Four wins in his first
six Premier League games proved to be a false dawn and the COVID-inspired postponement of United's December 2021 visit to Goodison
meant that there was to be no Rafa reunion.
By the time that
relegation-haunted Everton lost at SJP in February 2022 he'd gone, dismissed
after a run of just one victory in thirteen league outings.
On Tyneside meanwhile, the Saudi-inspired takeover of NUFC was complete and
Steve Bruce had been replaced by Eddie Howe.
Spaniards Celta Vigo offered Rafa a three-year contract in June 2023 but he was
sacked in March 2024 after a poor run of results and has confined himself to
media work ever since.
1966 John Doyle born, Fremont,
California, USA. (1999)

US international defender who joined United in March 1991 on
trial from Swedish side Orgryte, having played for the San Jose Earthquakes
and the San Francisco Bay Blackhawks.
Doyle had an eventful debut for the reserves against the mackems at Roker
Park, conceding two penalties in a 3-1 Toon win.
No contract offer followed - as was the case when he trialed at Derby County
earlier that season - and John returned to Orgryte.
Later joining Germany side VfB Leipzig, a US return came in 1995 with
Atlanta Ruckus and then the Earthquakes again (by then renamed as San Jose
Clash).
Retiring in 2000, Doyle coached at San Jose (who were retitled to the
Earthquakes), serving as General Manager of the MLS side from 2004 until 2016.
He later coached in California.
1972 Matty Appleby born, Middlesbrough.
(1990-94)

Midfielder who came through the junior and reserve sides to
make a senior bow in a 1-1 home draw against West Bromwich Albion during
October 1990.
Matty was a regular choice during the reign of Ossie Ardiles, but returned to
the reserves when Kevin Keegan took over as manager.
However, KK did select Matty in the same side as his younger brother, Richie,
during our Anglo-Italian campaign of 1992-93.
A loan move to Darlington in 1994 was later made permanent and he was part of
the Quakers side who made their Wembley debut in a playoff loss to Plymouth in
1996.
Routinely playing in the defence by then, a transfer to Barnsley followed soon
after and after a spell at Oldham, Matty returned to Darlington in 2005.
He dropped into the non-league a year later, signing for Whitby Town and
becoming club captain at the Turnbull Ground as he reverted to his original
central midfield role.
Hanging up his boots at the end of the 2007/08 season, Matty undertook some
PFA-sponsored training before following brother Richie into the profession of
commercial deep sea diving.

Leading Division Two with four games to play, third-
placed Bolton threatened United's title and promotion
hopes and visited SJP on Good Friday with a certain
Wyn Davies leading their forwards.
The Welsh striker almost put his side ahead on two
occasions before home stopper John McGrath did his
job and "nullified" the threat.
Willie Penman headed home Stan Anderson's free kick
before half time then Jim Iley got forward to round
things off with his toe poke at the Gallowgate End.
Full time saw a pitch invasion after which the
players celebrated in the Directors Box by throwing
their shirts into the Centre Paddock - where they
were ripped apart by fans.
Promotion had been achieved and after a 1-1 draw at
Crystal Palace the following day and a 0-0 stalemate
at Bolton on Easter Monday, the title was wrapped up
ahead of a season closing 0-0 home draw with
Manchester City.

1975
Having netted his first England goal a month earlier
against Germany, Newcastle striker Malcolm Macdonald
hit all five as England beat Cyprus 5-0 in a European
Championship Qualifying fixture at Wembley Stadium.
Opening the scoring within two minutes of the start
with a header, a second followed on 35 minutes from a
Kevin Keegan pass before Mac hit the post.
His treble was then completed shortly after half time
thanks to a glancing close range header - and a
second KK assist.
Number four seconds later was a fine header, before
wrapping up the win with yet another close-range
header in the closing moments - this one against a
substitute 'keeper.
Although he didn't know it, Malcolm would never score
for England again or appear for his country at
Wembley, this game the ninth cap he won from an
eventual total of 14.

2010 The U18s exited from the FA Youth Cup
at the semi-final stage, losing 0-1 to Aston Villa in
front of 4,959 fans at SJP.
A 1-1 draw in the first leg at Villa Park had hardly

awry as a deflected effort gave Villa the half time
lead.
Magpies captain Jeff Henderson was stretchered off
just before the break and passed the armband on to
Phil Airey, who was sent off in the 86th minute.
2012 A remarkable reserve game at Whitley Park
against Manchester United saw Newcastle rack up a
three goal lead in 30 minutes - only to then concede
six times to a razor-sharp Red Devils attack.
Brad Inman, a Phil Airey penalty and Dan Taylor
netted before two goals in a minute from Will Keane
made it 3-2 at half time.
Keane claimed two more as his side led 6-3 by the
