Almi-gone
Thursday
brought confirmation of Miguel Almiron's Gallowgate exit, the Paraguayan international
rejoining
previous club Atlanta United for a claimed £11m fee.
31 next month, it's exactly six years since Miggy completed a £20.7m
switch to Tyneside from the MLS side - a record fee for the Magpies at that
time.
He leaves having taken 27 games to score the first of 30 league and cup goals for the club,
his 223rd and final appearance coming from the
bench in last Saturday's 3-1 Premier League win at Southampton.
Combining well with Ayoze Perez and Salomon Rondon to steer United clear of
relegation under Rafa Benitez, he added goals to his game in the 2019/20
season with eight in all competitions.
It's the 2022/23 campaign that Miggy is celebrated for though; a dozen
strikes that included a run of seven in as many Premier League games and
featuring a sublime volley away at Fulham.
Less memorable was his below-par performance at Wembley in the Carabao Cup
Final loss, although he certainly wasn't the only disappointment that day.
2023/24 saw Almiron make his Champions League bow, netting the opener in the
home trouncing of PSG - our first strike in that competition since Alan
Shearer.
Had the prospect of playing in Saudi Arabia enticed him, a departure in the
January 2024 window may have been possible, but a second stint in the USA
took rather longer to become a reality - with the intervening 12 months
doing little to enhance his reputation.
Unlike a certain other gentleman with the initials MA though, he'll be
fondly remembered as being part of our journey from indifferent also-rans to
a more credible outfit.
We once described him as an honest toiler and although inspiration sometimes
escaped Miggy, there was no doubting his work rate and enthusiasm.
Exit:
'Pools take Jamie
Also making a permanent departure
from Tyneside is Jamie Miley, who has completed a free transfer move
to National League side Hartlepool United.
The 21 year-old midfielder has been training with Pools since ending a loan
spell with League Two Newport County and was out of contract this summer.
The elder brother of Lewis, Jamie
made his U21 bow in 2021 and graduated to United's senior side during the
pre-season programme in 2023.
Last year saw him feature regularly in friendly matches but he wasn't
retained in the first team squad and a temporary switch to Newport was
arranged - only for a hernia problem to derail his debut and require
surgery.

Ahead of their visit to Tyneside, the Cottagers lost 0-1 at home to
Manchester United on Sunday evening.
On the road this season, Marco Silva's side have won four (Forest,
Palace, Chelsea and Leicester), drawn four (Ipswich, Everton, Spurs
and Liverpool) and lost three (Manchester United, Manchester City
and West Ham).
Fulham have scored twice in each of their last four PL away games, with
seven of the eight goals coming in the second half of games.
Referee: Chris

Newcastle's U18 side
were victorious at Rockliffe Park on Saturday, thanks to
goals from Matheos Ferreira, Henry Johnson and a brace for Joe
Brayson.
Returning to action for the first time since their FA Youth Cup exit
at the hands of Aston Villa, United went ahead on 19 minutes when
Ferreira shot home from outside the box.
Brayson doubled that lead ten minutes later before Henry Johnson's header made it 3-0 four minutes before the break
- his first goal for the club at U18 level.
Winless at home in the league all season, 'Boro got one back through Eric Hamelberg just before the
hour but Brayson's second of the game restored Newcastle's three goal advantage with seven minutes to go.
Johnson's handball allowed Boro's Fin
O'Gormon to net from an 89th minute minute penalty, but the young Magpies
eased to victory without further incident.

West Ham
(a) new date
The Premier League
confirm that Newcastle's visit to West Ham has been
rescheduled for live UK TV.
The Magpies will visit the London Stadium on Monday March 10th with
an 8pm kick-off, live on Sky Sports.
That means travelling fans will avoid that weekend's rail engineering works,
but it adds the time and cost of yet another overnight stay for all but the
most hardy - all less than a week before our potential Wembley visit.
PS: Newcastle's slot is the latest of the four Carabao Cup semi-finalists
over that weekend before the final; Liverpool untelevised on the Saturday
while both Spurs and Arsenal are moved to the Sunday.
The scheduling of Champions League games in the week commencing March 10th
looks also to have contributed to those PL fixture selections.

Arsenal
(h)
Wednesday sees Newcastle host Arsenal at SJP in the second leg of their
Carabao Cup semi-final tie, with the Magpies enjoying a 2-0 lead
following the first leg in North London.
It's an 8pm kick-off live on Sky Sports and the winners will
face either Liverpool or Spurs at Wembley Stadium on Sunday March
16th (kick-off unknown).
Should the aggregate score be a draw after 90 minutes, an additional 30 minutes will be played before a penalty shootout is
required. An additional substitute can be used during extra time.
Were Newcastle to reach the final, no player bans would be imposed
as a result of accumulated bookings - only a rerun of the PL red card
misfortune that befell Nick Pope two years ago would result in any
suspensions.
The visitors have sold their 4,883 allocation.

The Blues are
managed by Chris Davies, who took up the post last summer following
a coaching career that saw him follow Brendan Rodgers to Swansea

working under Ange Postecoglu at Tottenham Hotspur.
They reached the Fourth Round thanks to a 1-0 win at Conference side
Sutton United, a 2-1 win at third tier Blackpool and a 2-1 home win
over fellow League One side Lincoln City.
While Newcastle are in Carabao Cup semi-final action on Wednesday
night, Birmingham will have a full week to prepare for our visit
following a home league fixture against Rotherham United on
Saturday.
City go into that game having lost just twice in 26 league outings
this season, with nine wins and three draws from 12 League One

Newcastle have confirmed that they

U19 category in the US city this coming April.
This will be the third time that United have entered this event, having
previously travelled to the Lone Star state in both 1998 and 2003.
That 2003 tournament saw the Magpies reach the semi-finals after victories
over Chicago Magic (1-0), Deportivo Saprissa (2-1) and UNAM Pumas (6-0).
Beaten 0-1 by the US U17 national team in front of 10,000 fans, United then

On This Day in History |
30th January |
Born Or Died:
1970 Alan Lamb
born, Gateshead.
(1991)
Striker who starred for Durham Schoolboys
but opted to join Nottingham Forest
instead of accepting an offer from
Newcastle.
Loaned out to Hereford United without
making it into the first team at the City
Ground, Lamb left Forest in favour of
Hartlepool United in 1989.
By 1991 though he'd drifted into
non-league football and was playing
for Brandon United when the Magpies
offered him a trial.
Lamb made eight reserve appearances and
scored twice, his debut coming away at
Manchester City when he played alongside
fellow Magpies hopeful Justin Fashanu.
However, no contract offer came and Lamb
signed for Gateshead,
appearing for them in two spells
sandwiching a stint playing in New Zealand
for North Shore United, Mount Maunganui
and Kawerau.
Returning to New Zealand, Lamb settled in
the town of Taupo on the North Island
and turned out for local side Taupo AFC.
1994 Dennis Knight born,
Newcastle. (2010-13)
A prolific scorer at
junior level for the Walbottle club,
Dennis made his U18 debut against
Nottingham Forest during March 2010,
whilst still a schoolboy.
Joining United's Academy the same summer, he
soon sampled reserve team football as a
substitute in a pre-season friendly to non-league side Gateshead.
And just days before his 17th birthday,
Knight made his bow at SJP in an FA Youth
Cup win over Grimsby Town - in midfield.
Marking his competitive reserve debut with
a goal against Bedlington Terriers in the
Senior Cup, he also scored a fine solo
effort at SJP against Watford in an FA
Youth Cup tie.
After eight outings for the reserve side
in the 2012/13 season however, Dennis was
declared surplus to requirements and joined Hartlepool United
on a trial in early 2013.
Knight then signed for Barnsley on a non- contract basis but after
failing to make a senior appearance, left Oakwell in the close season.
He later played in the Northern League for
West Auckland, Newton Aycliffe, Jarrow
Roofing and Newcastle Benfield.

This Fourth Round replay at the Old Showground was to be Newcastle's final
visit to the venue.
By the time they met again in 1993, The Iron had moved to Glanford Park on the
outskirts of the town, while their former home had been demolished to build a
supermarket.
PS: One of the linesman in this replay was a bearded twit called Trelford
Mills....
1977 Gordon Lee announced he was leaving
Newcastle to take up a lucrative contract as the manager of Everton.
His decision was to prompt the sorry player power episode that eventually saw
United slip down the league and into Division Two.
1979
Newcastle's FA Cup Fourth Round Replay against Wolves at Molineux was
postponed due to the winter weather conditions.
It was eventually played on February 22nd.

Victory over second tier Swindon put top-flight Newcastle into the Fifth
Round of the FA Cup for a second successive season.
Two up at the interval, Neil McDonald hit his 58th minute spot kick wide of the
target and was then reluctant to try again when a further penalty was awarded.
Gazza stepped up to scored his second of the game in front of watching England
boss Bobby Robson, who said: "He's got the football world at his feet
and a long and successful career ahead of him."
PS: Although nobody knew it at the time, this victory indirectly resulted in the
mackems' promotion two years later.
An FA enquiry into alleged betting by Town boss Lou Macari and Chairman Brian
Hillier - who both backed Newcastle to win this game - spread to
encompass all financial aspects of the Wiltshire club.
Further irregularities came to light, and The Robins were refused entry to the
First Division, despite just having beaten the mackems in a one-sided play-off
final.
For reasons never explained, the red and whites then took their place (but not
for long...),

1998 United signed full back Andrew

seeing off a Villa side who began the say in second place.
lan Shearer had gone 894 minutes without a league goal but quickly marked his new status of captain (standing in for the injured Rob
Lee) by powering in a header from a Stephen Glass cross.
The Georgian loon added a second from a pullback by the Scots winger before Al
continued his one-man assault on the Villa defence; having a goal chalked off
and thumping a header off the crossbar.

2003 Newcastle agreed a £9m deal with
Leeds United for Jonathan Woodgate as the extent of the financial plight at
Elland Road became clearer.
2004 One Caldwell left SJP while the other was packing his bags - Gary moved
on to Hibernian on a free transfer whilst brother Steve agreed terms with the mackems.
2005 With Craig Bellamy allegedly mulling over an offer from Birmingham
City (although Billy Smart's would have been more likely), Freddy Shepherd had a
pop at our ex-Boss for his mismanagement of the troublesome Taff:
"I am very disappointed Sir Bobby Robson chose to make comments about the
problems we have been experiencing.
"I have the greatest respect for him,
but he has been in the game long enough to know he should have stayed silent on
this matter.
"Graeme Souness has been unfairly
blamed for what has happened in the past week. But the seeds of the Craig
Bellamy situation were sown before he arrived.
"Sir Bobby had no business in
commenting in the Bellamy affair last week and making allegations about what he
thought had happened in the dressing room.
"Many of the problems Graeme is having
to deal with are down to the way the previous manager handled matters of
discipline.
"If Sir Bobby had taken a harder line,
I am convinced we wouldn't be facing this situation."
2006 John Salako and Ian Rush drew the
balls that handed Newcastle a Fifth Round FA Cup trip to Championship side Southampton - our third
consecutive draw against lower league opposition.
2008 Two quality shots from midfielder
Mark Doninger were the highlight of an expected 3-0 Northumberland Senior Cup
success over North Shields at Ralph Gardner Park.
In front of a watching Kevin Keegan, United were ahead at the interval thanks to
winger Jonny Godsmark before Doninger's double.

United's Championship lead grew to four points but they missed the chance to
pull further away from Nottingham Forest against the ten-man Foxes.
City's Ritchie Wellens received his second yellow card after half an hour but a
reshaped United couldn't capitalise.
New recruits, Wayne Routledge, Mike Williamson and Patrick Van Aanholt started, while Fitz Hall was on the bench as Chris Hughton paraded his latest
signings.
The home side meanwhile handed a debut to their new acquisition, Nolberto Solano
in this Saturday teatime kick-off for live TV.

Yohan Cabaye was charged with violent conduct following referee Lee Probert's
review of TV footage of the Brighton FA Cup defeat.
The
midfielder appeared to catch Seagulls defender Adam El-Abd in the face with his
boot when the pair fell to the ground during the second half, although Probert
played on.
Cabaye received a three game ban.
2013
Perhaps it was a wise
decision to play United's U21 game against Reading behind closed doors at
Darsley Park - the Royals posting a 3-0 victory against a Magpies side who ended
up with nine men after the dismissal of Jak Alnwick and Jamie Sterry.
New arrival Massadio Haidara was sighted for the first time and appeared in the
left back slot. Academy striker Tom Heardman also made his debut at this level.

Callum Wilson's delightful double brought United an
unexpected but deserved victory at Goodison Park - finally ending their winless run at the
twelfth attempt.
In addition to the header and shot he put past Jordan Pickford, the striker twice hit the woodwork and side-footing

Incoming coach Graeme Jones was credited with inspiring a fine team display, but
Steve Bruce was quick to claim that the revival had begun some games beforehand.

When Jacob Murphy's effort went in off a home player the points looked secure,
but Ollie Watkins reduced the arrears and then quickly had another chalked off
as Unai Emery's side pressed strongly.
