14 mins
Taking possession in a central spot a short distance from the Palace box, Sandro
Tonali swept the ball across the field to Kieran Trippier. He laid the ball
beyond Tyrick Mitchell down the right wing, playing in Jacob Murphy on
the right hand side of the area.
With Marc Guehi shadowing him, Murphy looked up before unleashing a rising right
footed shot that flew over the head of Dean Henderson and into the Gallowgate
goal. 1-0

(36 mins Eberechi Eze penalty
saved)

38 mins Joelinton broke down the United left, pushing
the ball forward over halfway to the overlapping Tino Livramento, who released
Harvey Barnes by placing a pass goalside of Maxence Lacroix. Barnes wasted no
time in crossing towards Isak on the edge of the six yard box, but Marc Guehi's
attempted block on the centre sent it looping between Henderson and his near
post. 2-0

45+2 mins Newcastle counter-attacked from within
their own half, Bruno Guimaraes expertly guiding the ball forward to Tonali, who
disguised his pass out to Harvey Barnes to his left dashing unchecked
over halfway.
Barnes strode into the box and as Lacroix approached, for once opted against
turning inside to work an opening on his right foot, instead stepping to the
left and letting fly with a powerful left footer that tucked inside the far
post. 3-0

45+8 mins Trippier's free kick from the right hand
channel was back-heeled to Murphy, whose swooping cross picked out Fabian
Schar, who nodded in on the run from six yards from about the same spot that
his late disallowed effort against Brighton in the FA Cup came. 4-0

Half time: Magpies 4 Eagles 0

58 mins An attempted triangular passing move just
outside the Palace area involving Richards, Guehi and Lacroix floundered when
the latter allowed the pressing Joelinton to nick the ball off his toes and stab
it goalward. Alexander Isak latched on to the loose ball and calmly
dispatched it right-footed into the bottom right of the goal without further
ado. 5-0

Full time: Magpies 5 Eagles

Jason Tindall said:
"We spoke pre
game about maintaining the standards we set ourselves at the
weekend, about being really aggressive and on the front foot. I
thought the players went about that and executed that brilliantly.
"We've got a fantastic squad and the
balance of the team has been great. We've got some players on the bench who can
come on the pitch and make a difference. We're confident, we've had a good run
of results and we have to remain level headed and work hard every day to go out
and deliver performances.
"We need to make sure we remain focused
and level-headed. We've got a tough game now against Aston Villa, who are in
great form and have only lost one game at home all season. We know it's going to
be a really difficult performance."
On scoring nine goals in two games:
"It's good, if you had said that a week
ago, then I probably wouldn't have believed you. Full credit to the lads for
delivering the two performances they have, but don't stop there.
"We have six cup finals remaining. We
have to be consistent and deliver the right performances to get us into the
Champions League."
On winning the Carabao Cup:
"That gave us huge confidence, we went
out and delivered a performance against arguably one of the best teams in Europe
in Liverpool.
"We were able to enjoy that for a
period of time but we knew what our objectives were for the remainder of the
season - to finish as high up the league table as possible.
"The manager always leads and sets that
example of never switching off. They've gone out there, been really consistent
and delivering performances.
On speaking to Eddie Howe:
"I did just see a message from Eddie
congratulating the team and staff - really nice message!
"I think at a time like this the most important thing is your health, that
you rest and recover. We wish Eddie all the best and the more he can rest the
sooner he'll be back."
On Champions League qualification:
"That's where we want to get to.
Everybody in the Premier League wants to be in the champions league. We've
experienced it before and we want more of it.
"We've got six cup finals now remaining
and we have to stay focused to be able to go out there and deliver the
performances we know will help us to get Champions League."
Oliver
Glasner said:
"Newcastle are in excellent shape and they showed this in the last weeks. We
couldn't deal with their intensity, with their directness, with their pace.
"When we had the situation maybe to get
back into the game, it didn't work today. There are some days where, to be
honest, almost nothing works. This was one of those days for us.
"On the other side, many things that
worked for Newcastle... then it's this result, it's the game, how it happened. I
said to the players: ‘sometimes you have such games and it's not always being
so analytical, sometimes it's better to throw it into the bin,’ and this is
what we will do with this game.
"Sometimes you don't have the right
answer, because we changed nothing and things don't work anymore. We didn’t do
it on the level we have done it previously.
"We also know, and I think we have to
be very honest: we are Crystal Palace, and if we don't perform on our top level
individually and as a team, then maybe a Newcastle side and Manchester City side
are better than we are, especially when they are in form and playing at home.
This is what we experienced the last two games.
"Newcastle maybe didn't have as high of
an intensity until the end of the game – but again, it doesn't help. We didn't
get any points from this game today. We can talk about it, we can analyse it. I
think it's good for us maybe to take one step back and focus on the basics,
focus on what made us strong.
"Then, we will give everything, always
together. It's not a moment to point the finger at anyone. It's now time to look
into the mirror and say, ‘OK, what can I maybe change a little bit' – and
then we will get the turnaround."
Newcastle won by five
clear goals for the first time since the 8-0 PL success at Sheffield
United in September 2023. It's their largest home win since the 6-1
PL conquest of Spurs in April 2022.
The Magpies scored four goals in the first half of a PL game for
the second time this season, also doing so in the 4-3 home win over
Nottingham Forest in February.
With six games left, United's tally of 59 points is just one
less than in the full 2023/24 season.
Anthony Gordon completed a century of league and cup games for
the club (79 starts).
Kieran Trippier made his 100th start for the Magpies in all
competitions.
Tino Livramento made his 50th start in all competitions since
joining Newcastle.
Jacob Murphy registered his 19th strike for Newcastle in the
PL, one less than Bruno Guimaraes.
Harvey Barnes now has 14 PL goals for United, level with team
mate Joe Willock and Loic Remy.
Fabian Schar scored his 17th Newcastle PL goal, matching the
total of Yohan Cabaye and moving one behind current colleague Anthony
Gordon. He now has 20 goals in all competitions.
Alexander Isak scored his 25th club goal so far this season
in all competitions, matching his 2023/24 total. 21 of those 25
have come in the PL, again equal with last season's tally.
Nick Pope saved the fifth PL penalty of his career and the third
as a Magpie:
April 2025 Eberechi Eze for Crystal Palace (h) 36 mins
May 2023 Patrick Bamford for Leeds United (a) 28 mins
April 2023 Ivan Toney for Brentford (a) 29 mins
For completeness here are his other two for Burnley - the SJP one was also
at the Leazes End:
January 2020 Jamie Vardy for Leicester City (h) 68 mins
January 2018 Joselu for Newcastle (a) 33 mins
Pope also thwarted Palace three times in a Carabao Cup tie shootout at SJP
in November 2022, denying Luka Milivojevic, Jean-Philippe Mateta
and Malcolm Ebiowei at the Leazes End.
The Magpies scored twice in the same passage of added time for the
first time since Florian Lejeune's on 90+4 and 90+5 minutes at Everton in
January 2020.
Eagles @ Magpies - PL era:
2024/25 Won 5-0 Murphy, og(Guehi),

Newcastle took full
advantage of their Premier League game in hand, ripping apart the Eagles
in a devastating passage of play at St. James' Park on Wednesday evening.
With pneumonia victim Eddie Howe still recuperating elsewhere, Jason Tindall and Graeme Jones
took charge of the first team for the second time in four days, retaining
the same starting line-up that had won five successive league and cup
games.
By half time a four goal salvo was en route to extending that run to six;
one further goal after the interval making it a round dozen goals scored in just three outings.
Jacob Murphy and Harvey Barnes did the damage, flying down both
wings during an amazing first half when the hosts missed a trio of presentable
chances in addition to the four they bagged.
Murphy set his side on their way after 14 minutes with a fabulous
pile driver finish from the right wing reminiscent of Sandro Tonali's
Brentford blaster at the other end of the park. There may have been a
doubt over whether Italian had meant to shoot, but Jacob's effort was
certainly intentional.
Further goals looked set to follow for a free-flowing Magpies side, but
the pivotal moment of the first half came at the end that the Eagles were
attacking.
A free kick from a central position midway in the United half was played
by Eberechi Eze towards the edge of the box, dropping towards Chris
Richards, only for Nick Pope to appear, fisting the ball clear with his
right arm and simultaneously barging into the visiting player with his
left shoulder.
That ill-timed intervention was belatedly penalised by a penalty kick
following a prolonged pitchside VAR check by referee Darren England,
United then indulging in various delaying tactics, notably some extended
pushing and shoving on the edge of the area involving Fabian Schar and
Tonali. Kieran Trippier's gesturing meanwhile spurred the Leazes crowd
into cat-calling and waving.
Pope duly denied Eze, although the custodian's atonement was aided by one of the worst spot-kicks in living
memory, the visiting player's run-up more statuesque than stuttering and his shot
barely making it the 12 yards to the goal.
Rather than 1-1, within seconds it was 2-0 as Harvey Barnes broke down the left and his
intended cross towards Alexander Isak deflected off Marc Guehi's arm and
past Dean Henderson. The Palace defender who was strongly linked with a
move to Tyneside had also registered an own goal during Newcastle's visit
to Selhurst in November - a slightly more subtle ploy than a transfer
request...
That passage of play prompted memories of a 5-1 home victory over Carlisle United in Easter
1984; home 'keeper Kevin Carr saving Alan Shoulder's
penalty at the Leazes End before the Magpies broke straight upfield and Kevin Keegan nodded home a deflected goal.
Having lost out on extending his recent scoring streak, Barnes then found
the net during first half added time - a well-taken effort ending a
sweeping move from one end of the pitch to the other after Tonali had
played him through.
Yet more misery awaited Oliver Glasner and those home fans who sloped off
for a premature pint, with a second Newcastle goal in added time: Murphy
supplying an accurate cross after a free kick was played to him for Fabian Schar to
deftly net with a flicked header into the corner of the net.
The Magpies started the second half in similar fashion and a fifth goal
arrived on 58 minutes when further energetic pressing saw Joelinton win the ball off Maxence Lacroix and
set up Isak to curl his shot home from the edge of the box - a fine
finish from what was his hardest chance of the night.
That ended a run of 12 goals scored by Newcastle since the Swede had last
registered against Brentford, on a night where he could easily have had another hat-trick.
From then on, the black and whites cruised to victory and kept a clean
sheet despite slackening off their pressure on the Palace goal after
making the full allowable number of replacements; the artist formerly
known as Callum Wilson again preferred to William Osula.
Victory saw Newcastle go third in the table, four points behind Arsenal
and five ahead of sixth placed Chelsea. Their +21 goal difference is also superior to the sides occupying fourth,
fifth and sixth.
Those numbers reinforce the momentum we currently possess; a team in prime
form posting legendary performances across the field. Be it Trippier
rolling back the years in his 200th PL game, Barnes and Murphy continuing
the best form of their Magpies career or Tonali prompting earnest
discussions as to whether he is our best midfielder in living memory, these
are rare times.
At the risk of being labelled kill-joys, Saturday's visit to Villa comes
into the category of don't lose rather than must win, but at this point in
time we genuinely fear no foe. What a time to be alive.
