Goals

11 mins Tino Livramento was forward supporting an attack meaning that when Liverpool broke with Luis Diaz down their left, Fabian Schar went out to close down the winger.

He didn't get anywhere near enough and when the Colombian cut the ball back from the byline, Dominik Szoboszlai netted with a shot that went through two sets of legs and took a slight deflection off Burn before beating Nick Pope.

Sandro Tonali had left the Hungarian midfielder unattended and for the second game in a row, Pope looked easily beaten with a shot that he would usually save comfortably with his feet. 0-1

Half time: Reds 1 Magpies 0

63 mins Tonali's forward pass was intercepted by Alexis Mac Allister in his own half. The Argentinean was able to take the ball unopposed all the way into United's area where he laid it off to Mo Salah on the right side of the box.

The Egyptian teased Lewis Hall before playing a pass to Mac Allister who swept a firm first time shot beyond Pope into the far corner of the goal at the Kop End. 0-2

Full time: Reds 2 Magpies 0

We Said

Eddie Howe said:

"I thought we were okay tonight, I thought we played pretty well. I think what let us down was the two goals we conceded. We should never concede from those situations.

"We've got our bodies back, we just do not mark men. We're just two yards off very good players in the box and they punish us. I'm really disappointed with that aspect of our play.

"But I thought in between the boxes we were competitive tonight. It wasn't our best performance from an attacking sense, but I thought we had moments and chances for our final ball, so that let us down really, I thought.

"The first goal we don't track him into the box. We're fighting in the game after that to try and get the next goal. But then we do exactly the same thing. Two soft goals."

On Alexander Isak:

"I had a chat with him around lunchtime to see how he felt. We knew he was feeling something yesterday. We hoped that it would improve overnight but it didn't improve enough. We don't envisage it being a big problem for him.

"He just didn't feel right with his groin so we didn't want to take the risk - we've got too many big games to come.

"It goes without saying how important he is to us, certainly you can see that today and we missed him. It was a late decision around midday today, he just didn't feel right in his groin, so we didn't want to take the risk, we've got so many big games to come.

"But that meant a tactical reshuffle, so we changed things around, we brought Callum in and played a different way, and I thought our shape was good. I had no issues with that, no issues with the effort levels. The commitment was there."

On Callum Wilson:

"Callum will always back himself and we back him to take the chances, they're not easy opportunities. He played well tonight, led the line and played well."

On having no shots on target:

"Not good, can't sit there and say we planned that. We had opportunities, obviously you're not going to get an abundance of chances here so when you do you have to take them and we didn't do that tonight."

On lessons for facing Liverpool again at Wembley:

"You always learn, sometimes you learn more in defeat than victory an two games against them this season we've been competitive but we have to perform better than today if we want to win the trophy.

"We need to find our best rhythm again, we have a few players out missing hopefully we can get them back. Big games, big moments in our season. We're still in both cups and we want to stay that way."

They Said

Arne Slot - who watched from the stand while serving a touchline ban - said:

"What impressed me most was that this was our fifth game in 15 days and the four before weren't the most simple ones.

"So, Everton we all know how an emotional game that was for both teams but definitely for us as well and then Wolves and then two difficult away games with
(Aston) Villa and (Manchester) City.

"To show up the way we did tonight, hardly conceding a chance against a very good team like Newcastle, is a big compliment for the players how they handled these five games in 15 days.

"That's the biggest reason why I didn't take these players to Plymouth Argyle because then they have to travel again, they are away from home, they might have to play 10, 15, 30, 45 minutes because I would definitely have used them if I would have taken them – and that means for them no rest.

"I believe in the fact that these players are able to play five games in 15 days like they show but they can't do this for 10 months in a row, so they need to have, once in a while, a break. We are talking about a break if I'm talking about five, six days of not playing a game of football.

"After Everton, a bit Wolves, maybe a bit after the Villa game, people started to question us a bit and normally when players or people get questions, you always see extra work-rate. That's quite normal and what I saw us doing against City.

"But if you get a lot, a lot, a lot of compliments, eight out of 10 people get a bit complacent – but only the ones that want to achieve something don't. That mentality of these two out of 10 I saw tonight because they just found an extra gear to work even harder.

"We weren't perfect – I think we lost more simple balls than we usually do – but the mentality was great again, as well as the squad performance.

"Watching it in real time (from the stand) is less stressful, less emotional, let's put it that way, because you don't feel the emotions or energy of the players, you have a better overview.

"The downside is that you can see replays as well and, as you know from the reason why I was suspended, I can get emotional about certain decisions! That is sometimes then a disadvantage, that you can see the replays, but OK. A great team performance.

Nine of the starting line-up in the 3-3 draw with Liverpool at Gallowgate in December kept their places here - the absent Isak and Joelinton replaced by Wilson and Willock.

Liverpool have now lost just once in 28 PL games this season, a 0-1 home defeat by Nottingham Forest in September. That was also the last time that they failed to find the net in the PL

Wednesday saw Newcastle extend their winless Premier League run at Anfield to 29 games - failing to register a single shot on target in the absence of Alexander Isak.

United's top scorer missed out with what was described as a slight groin strain, Callum Wilson recalled to start his first league game since May 2024 and lasting 69 minutes William Osula appeared.

Wilson had two shots - one offside - without testing home goalkeeper Allison - but otherwise 3,000 Toon fans endured another 90 tedious minutes on a par with the last away game at Manchester City.

The Magpies had actually taken the lead on three of their last five visits to Anfield before succumbing to Liverpool attacks, but tonight's outcome was never in doubt after the opening 11 minutes.

Fabian Schar failed to stop Luis Diaz advancing down the left and when the Colombian cut the ball back from the byline, Dominik Szoboszlai scored Liverpool's 100th goal this season with a shot that went through two sets of legs and took a slight deflection off Burn before beating Nick Pope.

Further home goals could have followed; Newcastle's perpetual nemesis Mo Salah getting away from Lewis Hall for once and cutting in from the right to fire narrowly over from distance.

At the other end, a perfect through ball from Dan Burn released Wilson but he sliced the ball wide with only Alisson between him and the Kop End net.

United did find some space down their right flank in the opening half, but Jacob Murphy struggled to provide service from that area and received little help from his colleagues, Bruno Guimaraes in particular a non-entity and Anthony Gordon continually hassled by opponents and home fans alike.

One behind at the interval, neither side made any real impact in an uneventful opening to the second period, before the Reds moved closer to claiming the title with a second goal just after the hour mark - as challengers Arsenal were dropping points at Nottingham Forest.

Alexis Mac Allister began the move after Sandro Tonali surrendered possession and the Argentinean was in the right place to receive a return pass from Salah in the box, stylishly sweeping home.

That prompted the replacement of four visiting players - messrs Wilson, Tonali, Livramento and Willock making way for Osula, Miley, Trippier and Barnes.

A third home goal was then wiped out by VAR for a foul before Pope denied Salah. The visitors meanwhile won a couple of corners that were easily dealt with before the full time whistle sounded, leaving the victors ten points clear at the top of the league.

As a dress rehearsal for next month's Carabao Cup Final next month, those clad in black and white tonight gave no grounds for optimism that our 70 year quest for silverware search is in any danger of ending soon.

The return of Isak, Joelinton and Sven Botman may lessen our chances of becoming the first team ever to lose all of their three League Cup Finals, but we'll have to show rather more fight there than in this dreary display.

Despite conceding an early goal again, United should have gone in level at half-time against a Reds side who did enough to win without overly exerting themselves.

They may be the best on the planet, but tonight they only needed to be competent. Maybe we're just lulling them into a false sense of security, maybe....

Like visits to the Etihad, coming to Anfield is a uniformly miserable experience when we seem to be a beaten team before the first whistle sounds. Sadly, that also applies to Wembley...

Wins for Chelsea and Manchester City left Newcastle sixth with 44 points - two places and four points better off than last season, but three places and six points behind their 2023 totals.

Eleven games remain to be played in what is an increasingly tight Premier League table -  Eddie Howe's side sitting four points off third spot but only two points ahead of tenth. Eight of the ten games against sides currently above us have been played, which is a slight relief.
