19 mins A goal of staggering simplicity:
Ederson wandered well out of his area with the ball at his feet before launching
it down the middle of the field towards Marmoush, who was in position when
former City defender Kieran Trippier missed his header. The Egyptian headed
towards goal before supplying a neat right-footed lob over the onrushing Martin
Dubravka.
United's nominal central defenders were taken out by the goalkeeper's assist;
Fabian Schar beyond the centre circle in the City half shadowing Phil Foden and
Dan Burn lingering on the halfway line in the vicinity of Erling Haaland. 0-1
24 mins It got no better as Ilkay Gundogan strode towards the Newcastle goal
before slipping a forward pass through to Marmoush, who ran into the space
between Jacob Murphy and Trippier, checking infield to leave the latter behind
before firing home from 14 yards to Dubravka's right.
Faint hopes that the goalscorer was offside evaporated when replays confirmed
that Burn was playing him onside in the middle of the field. 0-2
33 mins Another awful goal to concede as Foden pushed forward into the
United half and sprayed a pass out to Savinho on the right. He went past Lewis
Hall as if he wasn't there before pulling a low ball back to Marmoush, who was
left alone to blast home first time from just past the penalty spot; Bruno
Guimaraes sauntering back and Schar ball watching and facing his own goal. 0-3
Half time: Citizens 3 Magpies 0
86 mins Gundogan’s corner kick from the City left was met by
Haaland at the near post, whose flick-on fell for James McAtee to stick a leg
out and beat Dubravka from inside the six yard box. 0-4
Full time: Citizens 4 Magpies 0
Eddie Howe said:
"We
are very disappointed with our general performance.
"I
expected us to be really competitive, but I don’t think we were.
Off the ball, in terms of trying to deliver a really competitive,
energetic performance, it wasn’t there.
"We
were off on our duels, and then it becomes very difficult because
they’re still the best team in the Premier League, maybe the world
for me, in the build-up phase.
"With the ball, I think they’re still a very difficult team
to play against. They can keep the ball for long periods of time
so it can become a difficult mix if you don’t get that first part
right and we didn’t. Sadly, that led to a disappointing
performance.
"We're far from perfect. We have days where we can look far
from the team we are when we're on it. We were much better in the
second period but the game was gone.
"It was painful to watch from the sidelines, we were a yard off
and allowed their players too much space. I know a lot has been made
of their run but with the ball City are the best in the
league."
On whether the Wembley visit was a factor:
"If that is the case, then we’re in trouble because our
Premier League season will be over by the time that final comes
around. It can’t be the focus.
"It’s on the horizon, but it should be a positive, it
shouldn’t be a negative distraction for us. I’d encourage the
players to look at it that way, it’s an excitement. But we have to
go back to work, and work is the Premier League, the day in, day
out.
"We have to perform – that’s three of our last
performances in the Premier League that haven’t been good enough,
and they’ve all had similar traits in them. It’s back to basics
for us next week.
"I can’t stop other people talking about it. We’ve
tried to address it internally and then put it away.
"I don’t know. People will naturally assume that the cup
final might be a negative distraction, and it certainly wasn’t a
good performance from us today, but I’d need a bit of time before
sticking my colours to the mast to see what went wrong.”
On
Lewis Miley:
"The big positive is Lewis’ performance in the second half.
"He showed, not just bravery
out of possession, in terms of winning
duels and covering the pitch, but also in terms of taking the ball,
showing composure and making the right decisions, which we didn’t
do enough of.
"He can be very proud of his performance, but some of us need
to look at him because he led the way."
Pep Guardiola said:
"We finished 22nd in the Champions
League table, but if we had performed like we did today, of course not, we would
have finished higher. But we have
been really, really poor in performances and in the results this season and just
for one game, today, we played really well."
"It's not going to change the opinion,
the reality of where the team is right now, and we're still not good, in terms
of day-by-day, being that.
"We were really good, good energy up front...Hopefully
we can be calm. This season is just to survive but hopefully this game can give
us confidence for the season.”
On Marmoush:
"The highlights are for him, of course. Three goals, we knew it - in
Germany at Frankfurt he made good numbers. Against Leyton Orient he had three
clear chances and couldn’t score but we knew sooner or later.
"The dynamic of the group was good and
performance was good. He showed what he is. Hopefully he can handle the biggest
compliments that are coming. It’s non-stop. It’s
so simple, when you play good everyone adapts quickly but when you don’t play
good, you need time. It’s not difficult.
"When we played against Chelsea, he
played good and we won. He’s a player that we missed, his movements in behind
and his pace. He likes to attack the space and he helps to play with more time.
When we play like we did today, everyone is better - even the manager!”
On Gonzalez:
"The presence from Nico help us
a lot in the 50/50s. He wins seven and we can run. If he loses seven, they would
run. The club made an incredible investment for the future. He was a player in
the Barcelona academy, which is the best in the world to teach you things like
body shape.
"He’s 23, like a mini-Rodri. It’s a big compliment but he has a feeling
with that presence. He wins the duels. He’s far away in other things because
Rodri is the best.”
On Khusanov:
"The pace from Khusanov when they make transitions, that’s why we bought
him. He’s so fast. He’s too aggressive in duels and when you don’t win the
ball it’s a transition, but it’s a question of time and he will learn."
On Savinho:
"The impact from Savinho in his first
season in England, with goals and assists - I didn’t expect it. I knew from
Girona he was a top, top player but I didn’t expect the influence he would
have in our games."
Callum Wilson completed a century of Premier
League games for United (69 starts), while Tino Livramento made his
50th PL appearance as Magpie (31 starts).
This was United's 20th
winless PL visit to the Etihad - they've won two points from a possible 60.
The last Magpie to score a Premier League goal here was DeAndre Yedlin in
September 2018 - 600 minutes ago. In all competitions the drought is
now 690 minutes.
Since Yedlin's goal, United have conceded 20 times here in the PL and
22 in all competitions.
United suffered their heaviest defeat since shipping five goals without
reply here in May 2022.
Newcastle's last PL away victory against City came in September 2000.
Erling Haaland's father Alf-Inge was in the home line-up at Maine Road that
day as Alan Shearer netted in a 1-0 win.
United fielded the same back four that started the 1-1 draw with City at SJP
back in September.
Omar Marmoush became the first Egyptian to net a hat-trick against United,
fellow countryman Mo Salah hitting two braces for Liverpool without getting
a third.
His 14 minute treble is similar to Michael Owen's effort for Liverpool at
SJP back in 1998:
Owen: 19, 24, 33
Marmoush: 17, 18, 32
However the hat-trick Sergio Aguero scored en route to his five goal haul
during City's 6-1 victory here over us in October 2015 was more rapid at
just nine minutes:
Aguero: 42, 49, 50, 60, 62
Marmoush netted the 22nd PL hat-trick to date against Newcastle and the
second in just four games, following Justin Kluivert's three goal spree at
Gallowgate for Bournemouth.

Newcastle's disastrous run at the
Etihad Stadium continued on Saturday despite City's indifferent form this
season, new signing Omar Marmoush helping himself to a hat-trick in 15 first
half minutes.
Substitute James McAtee completed the misery with a late fourth for City as
United continued their erratic form with a third reverse in four Premier
League games.
Quite simply, Eddie Howe's side failed to turn up - despite enjoying their
best run of away form since 1994 at the first whistle, winning all six games
on the road since losing at Brentford in December.
And while we had a week to prepare after the Birmingham FA Cup win, the
hosts went down 2-3 to Real Madrid here on Tuesday night, a tie that added
another two names to their injury list.
What seemed the best chance in living memory of a positive result at our
bogey ground was instead a nightmarish afternoon when a placid Magpies side
allowed City to saunter past them with ease.
The manager spoke of adopting an aggressive attitude but there was precious
little sign of that, as the same old timid and passive display here was soon
punished.
Our own pre-game hope of Newcastle ending their Etihad goal drought became
increasingly forlorn - and was ultimately downgraded to getting a shot on
target.
The visitors had barely crossed the halfway line by the time City grabbed a
19th minute lead, Marmoush latching on to Edersen's punt forward before
lobbing Martin Dubravka with ease.
That stirred an almost silent Etihad into life and home fans were
celebrating again five minutes later, when the Egyptian took Ilkay
Gundogan's pass inside the box and fired home without further ado.
0-2 then became 0-3 just after the half hour, Marmoush completing a 14
minute treble after Savinho swept past the dazed Lewis Hall and centred from
the right.
With £30m youngster Vitor Reis on the bench, City's other three recent
acquisitions featured: £59m arrival Mamoush, £50m midfield purchase Nico
and £34m defender Abdukodir Khusanov, the latter tracked by United with a
view to a close season arrival.
Newcastle of course fielded none, as they were unable to operate in the
January market. It's tempting to say that had we played this game a month or
so earlier than things could have different, but we were so woeful today
then we wouldn't have troubled anyone.
Kieran Trippier and Joe Willock failed to return after half-time but
replacements Tino Livramento and Lewis Miley never looked like sparking any
sort of comeback, despite City's well-documented habit of imploding when
leading this season.
Miley had one effort saved by Edersen on the hour but a non-event of a
second half concluded with City stirring themselves to score a fourth goal -
Erling Haaland heading a corner on at the near post for McAtee to steer in
unopposed.
By then, Sean Longstaff and Callum Wilson had replaced Bruno Guimaraes and
Anthony Gordon and there was a brief runout for Emil Krafth as four minutes
of added time approached. Harvey Barnes returned from injury but remained an
unused substitute.
Trips to Old Trafford may have become heart-warming in recent seasons, but
East Manchester remains a desert with just two points from the last 60.
This non-event was as miserable as any of our previous visits here - that
hated adjective "passive" making an unwelcome return to our
vocabulary.
Newcastle dropped to seventh in the table with Bournemouth winning at
Southampton. Nottingham Forest's loss at Fulham was the day's only positive
and makes their visit to Tyneside next weekend a potentially pivotal fixture
in terms of our European aspirations.
Another blank day then at the most unsuccessful of venues for us - ahead of
visits to those other arenas of perpetual disappointment, Anfield and
Wembley. Play like this and more misery awaits.
And of course, this may not be our final game here this season - ourselves
and City among the last 16 sides still involved the FA Cup and our last two
quarter final exits coming at their hands.

It's our sad duty to mark the death of lifelong supporter Alan Gardner
aged 78. He's pictured here in happier times with his nephew and great nephew -
three generations of the family related to former Magpie Alex Gardner, who won
three Division One titles for the club between 1899 and 1909.
Alex made 314 competitive appearances for Newcastle including
two against Manchester United at their Bank Street ground - a 3-1 win in
December 1906 and a 1-1 draw during February 1908.
The National Cycling Centre now occupies that location, a short walk from the
Etihad Stadium. The only trace of the ground is this commemorative plaque.
PS: slightly further away from the Etihad lies the site of the Hyde Road ground
that was home to Manchester City until 1923. There's now nothing to mark the
location of a venue where Alex made seven appearances for Newcastle between 1901
and 1907, winning twice.
