Newcastle U21s were in PL2 home action on Monday evening, facing Everton at
Whitley Park in a game rearranged from Friday due to the forecast high winds.
Winless in their last three league outings, the Toffees took a two goal lead but
were pegged back late in the game as the young Magpies earned a point.
Everton went ahead in the 23rd minute after a long pass eventually reached Omari
Benjamin and although his first effort was saved he hooked it in while on the
ground.
The visitors doubled their lead seven minutes after the break when Scott Bailey
tripped Bejnamin in the Newcastle box. Martin Sherif sent Aidan Harris the wrong
way from the penalty spot.
Leading the line in the absence of Ben Parkinson, Josh Donaldson and Sean Neave,
Garang Kuol struggled to make any impression and brought groans from those
present when reaching the byline but failing to pass.
His substitution soon after saw Matheos Ferreira debut following his goalscoring
appearance for the U18s last Saturday and the 16 year-old winger added some
welcome urgency to proceedings.
United pulled one back in the 74th minute when Johnny Emerson finished well from
Alfie Harrison's astute pass. Seven minutes later the scores were level when
Ferreira teed up Ellis Stanton to drive a low and true shot past Toffees 'keeper
Fraser Barnsley.
The Magpies came close to completing their comeback in the final seconds when
Harrison's shot was blocked at his near post by Barnsley. The point that they
rescued took them to 20 from 12 games - one more than they managed in the entire
2023/24 campaign consisting of 20 games.
