10 mins James Bree's forward pass down
the right touchline reached Kyle Walker-Peters, who had run between Dan Burn and
Lewis Hall to receive the ball level with the edge of the United area.
Burn went to ground on the byline as he prevented Walker-Peters from delivering
a cross, the Saints man opting instead to lay the ball to Bree. His first-time
right-footed centre picked out Jan Bednarek, who headed home unopposed from six
yards out.
Stranded between the goalscorer and Adam Armstrong, Fabian Schar marked neither.
0-1
26 mins Sandro Tonali
directed a free kick from the right hand touchline inside the Southampton half
towards the edge of the box, where Paul Onuachu got ahead of Burn to make a
clearing header.
That fell to Bruno Guimaraes, who pushed towards the right before playing in Alexander
Isak, who had taken a step back to remain onside. The Newcastle striker bore
down on goal before Joe Aribo intercepted him on the corner of the six yard box
with an illegal challenge.
The referee saw nothing wrong and indicated a corner, amid strong protests
initiated by Bruno and amplified by Isak. Instructed by VAR to consult the
pitchside monitor, a protracted review then caused Barrott to change his mind
and indicate a penalty kick.
Isak converted with a slightly stilted short run up and low finish into
the bottom left hand corner as McCarthy dived in the opposite direction. 1-1
30 mins Onuachu met McCarthy's
clearance with a sideways header in the centre circle that fell to Tonali. His
first-time cushioned pass to Jacob Murphy allowed him to surge infield, avoiding
Aribo and heading towards goal before pinging a perfect pass to Alexander
Isak on the edge of the box.
He showed Bednarek a clean pair of heels before casually clipping his shot
inside the far post from around 12 yards out. 2-1

51 mins Martin Dubravka
played a short pass to Livramento towards the right hand corner flag. He in turn
found Schar inside the box and he looked up before sweeping a trademark diagonal
ball in the direction of Isak just over halfway.
He lost out to a defender but when the ball bounced back into the United half,
Tonali got in front of Mateus Fernandes to head it forwards. As the Italian
dashed forward, Isak brought the ball down on his chest into the path of Anthony
Gordon on the left and his perfectly-weighted first-time ball was taken on by Sandro
Tonali, who stroked a low right-footed shot to McCarthy's right and inside
the post from about 13 yards out. 3-1

Eddie Howe said:
"I
thought it was a massive win for us after last week.
"The performance and the result weren't anywhere near what we have been of
late, especially conceding so early, that was a huge response from the players.
It would have been a moment that we needed to respond and dig deep, and we did.
"I thought we played really well in
that first half, excellent. Great response to conceding, I thought we looked
creative and had a good feel about us.
"Maybe not so much in the last half
an hour, but certainly in the first 60 minutes. Scored some good goals It's
always going to be a difficult game.
"Southampton's league position does
tell a lie. I think they're much more competitive than their league position
says. We knew it was going to be a tough game.
"Southampton
came out quickly and scored. That changes the dynamic of the whole game
because I thought we started really well.
"It was a big test of our character especially after what
happened last week. We needed a big response and we got that with the
penalty, we never looked back.
"I thought conceding that early goal was uncharacteristic of
us because we started the game really well, we looked like we were
comfortable.
"We didn't organise ourselves well
from a free kick and then they go and score. That was a key moment of the
game, as I said. Our response had to be really strong."
On the disallowed Fernandes goal:
"The VAR took a long time. That would have been crazy for us to disrupt
what looked like just seeing the game out to a nervy finish."
On Alexander Isak:
"He took the penalty really well. He was really good in lots of moments
during that first half. He was the conduit, he was the guy linking play for
us and then on the end of bits and pieces.
"He's taken the second goal really well, it was a great move from the
team. Delighted with him, delighted for the group. It's a big win for
us."
On Miggy Almiron:
"The crowd were very much embracing him and giving him a lot of love.
And I just felt it was....you know, Miggy's not that kind of character
that's got a huge ego that absorbs all the attention. But I just felt it was
imperative that we got him to the front.
"And everyone acknowledged he's been unbelievable for us. His attitude,
his commitment, the way he's played. I'm not saying it's a goodbye. We don't
know what's going to happen. But I just thought it was a great moment for
him."
On the travelling fans:
"The noise created by our away support was incredible. Those that
braved those elements to come down we thank them from the bottom of our
hearts. We hope they have a safe journey back."
On Friday's storm conditions, that had threatened to disrupt his
side's travel plans:
"When we were stood on the runway, we were
thinking we're getting battered by the wind. You're thinking this is going
to be terrible.
"Actually, once we were in the air,
we were fine, which sometimes it's a struggle to believe with the wind
because it was so strong in Newcastle."
The
Magpies were able to fly as scheduled on Friday afternoon:
On his squad's travel
plans:
Speaking on Friday morning:
"Our plan is to travel today but we are seeking advice from authorities
and the airport if it's safe to fly. If it's not, we could end
up travelling (Saturday) morning.
"We have travelled on the day before to a 5.30pm kick-off, you are in
and you're out. It's slightly unusual for a 3pm. kick-off but just something
we will have to adapt to.
"We have to be careful as the wind might turn an 8-9 hour (coach)
journey into a 12-13 hour one. It is a long journey, and also there's no
guarantee with the wind and the conditions.
"It's windy I have to say, I struggled to get in. We need to find
somewhere sheltered enough, and we do have a dome we can use but it's
whether that is safe because that's the strongest winds I've seen
here."
Ivan Juric said:
"I thought they really gave everything
they’ve got, they are fighting. They fought well but it wasn’t enough. There
were some crucial moments, like the penalty and other situations that go to
Newcastle’s side.
"I’m disappointed with the result but
not disappointed with how my team played today. They have to continue like this,
working on the training like this.
"Today there are not a lot of negative
things to say to my guys. They can do it better, some technical things, but they
gave it everything they’ve got.
“We scored a goal and it was a very good
moment in this situation because we pressed well, we moved the ball, and the
penalty for Newcastle I don’t accept because it wasn’t a penalty.
"This is a crucial moment: my idea from the bench was really clear. Joe
Aribo was in front of (Alexander) Isak. It’s the wrong decision for me.
"Watching it now it was not a
penalty. For me it can never be a penalty. For me it's a foul for us because he (Joe
Aribo) is in front for the ball.
"It's not easy of course but they have
to work hard. We have splendid fans and we have to do our best and prepare well
for the next game.
"Of course the situation is really bad
but I want to fight and create something. I saw some good moments today. We have
to understand really well which players are for the Premier League."
Alexander Isak
became the first Newcastle player to score in five consecutive away
Premier League games. His Premier League goals tally is now to 48,
overtaking injured colleague Callum Wilson's 47 with only Alan Shearer scoring
more PL goals (148) for the Magpies.
The Swede has 17 PL goals for the season, this his first successful
penalty. The 2023/24 campaign saw Isak hit 21 league goals including five spot
kick conversions.
Sandro Tonali's first PL goal of the season, made him the eighth different
Newcastle player to do so this season. That figure was 20 in 2023/24.
Following victories at Ipswich Town, Manchester United and Spurs, three
points here saw Newcastle win four consecutive away games in the Premier
League for the first time since October 1996.
Their best-ever run of PL victories away from SJP remains five, achieved in
October 1994. They
did win four consecutive Championship away games in November 2016, going one
better in May 2010.
Howe's side wrapped up their third PL double, following home and away
victories over Spurs and Wolves. United came from a goal down to win all three
away games in that sequence.
Since Ralph Hassenhuttl's Southampton side won 2-0 behind closed doors at
St.Mary's in November 2020, Newcastle have won eight and drawn the other one
of their nine league and cup meetings.
The 21 points that United have amassed from 12 PL away games so far this
season surpasses the 20 they earned from all 19 matches on the road in 2023/24.
Jan Bednarek's goal was the 900th that Newcastle have conceded away
from SJP in the PL, coming in the 567th game on the road. Of those 567, United
have lost 269 and registered 149 draws and 149 victories. One of those totals
will alter when we visit Manchester City in February....
This was Newcastle's fourth successive win at St.Mary's in all
competitions and their third successive PL victory on this ground.

Newcastle returned to winning ways on Saturday, coming from behind to
beat basement side Southampton - and registering their fourth successive
victory at St.Mary's in all competitions.
Trailing to Jan Bednarek's tenth minute header, United had turned that
deficit into an advantage by the half hour thanks to Alexander Isak's
quick-fire brace.
His first came from the penalty spot when VAR prompted referee Sam Barrott
to check the pitchside monitor after he had ignored a clear foul on Isak by
Joe Aribo; the Swede making no mistake from 12 yards out.
Level in the 26th minute, United led by the half hour after Isak swept home
an unselfish pass from Jacob Murphy to become the club's second top scorer
in the Premier League behind Alan Shearer.
The Swede was denied his treble just four minutes later by Alex McCarthy's
block, Joelinton also hitting the post as United began to run amok against a
Saints side with just four points from a possible 30 at home since their
top-flight return.
A further defensive lapse however saw Southampton come close to levelling
before the break, when Kyle Walker-Peters headed narrowly wide.
Newcastle looked to have ended the game as a contest six minutes after the
restart, Sandro Tonali taking Anthony Gordon's clever pass and finding the
bottom corner of the net amid great acclaim from away fans now relocated to
the southern end of the ground.
However a Magpies line-up with Fabian Schar selected in preference to Sven
Botman weren't wholly successful in their attempts at game management;
easing off and giving the hosts a sniff at getting back into the game.
Former Saint Tino Livramento, Joelinton and Murphy all spurned opportunities
for further goals before an 84th minute effort from Mateus Fernandes looked
to have conjured up a nervous finale, until a VAR decision saw the effort
disallowed for offside.
Introduced from the bench late on, Miggy Almiron's colleagues tried to set
him up for what would have been a farewell goal and he himself came close to
working an opening, only to be denied by McCarthy after a mazy dribble in
the box.
Three points, three goals and another slew of scoring records accompanied
what was a deserved win that helped banish memories of last week's 1-4
nightmarish home loss to Bournemouth.
However, other more competent sides may well have exploited what became a
sluggish performance; Bruno operating on less than full power and the
substitutes adding to the air of disorganisation.
Victory took United up to fourth, before Manchester City's teatime victory
over Chelsea nudged them ahead of us on goal difference.
Arsenal's win at Wolves saw Myles Lewis-Skelly shown a straight red for
violent conduct and unless that decision is appealed and rescinded, the
defender will miss the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final on Tyneside.
