Teams

Goals

6 mins The Cherries enjoyed a period of possession on the left flank in the United half, Semenyo dashing forward into space and receiving a through ball that he cut back from the byline into the path of the untracked Justin Kluivert. His left-footed finish was simple and precise. 0-1

25 mins A poor corner from Anthony Gordon on the United right was blocked and when the taker won another, Lewis Hall produced a superior delivery for Bruno Guimaraes to head home powerfully from near the penalty spot, although 'keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga probably should have saved it. 1-1

44 mins Dan Burn's poor pass to Bruno facing his own goal in deep in the Newcastle half saw the captain struggle with Ryan Christie, the ball running free for Ouattara. He moved forward towards the United area before pushing a pass into the space between Burn and Lewis Hall that Justin Kluivert had run into. His right-foot finish to Dubravka's right was cool and unerring.  1-2

Half time: Magpies 1 Cherries 2

90+2 mins Anthony Gordon attempted to play a diagonal ball from the right back area to Joe Willock in centre field, only for Tyler Adams to intercept and push it forward to Justin Kluivert. He received the ball, looked up and pumped an outstanding 24 yard shot into the left side of the net to complete his second Premier League treble of the season - the other having come at Wolves. 1-3

90+6 mins
To a background of emptying stands, Kluivert moved into the the United half down the middle of the pitch and picked out Milos Kerkez in acres of space on the Bournemouth left. Kieran Trippier's attempt to close him down failed and the Hungarian stepped over the ball before burying a left-footed strike from 10 yards into the far side of the goal. 1-4

We Said

Eddie Howe said:

"Firstly, I have to congratulate our opponent. I thought Bournemouth were better than us today.

"I thought they played very well and never allowed us to find our rhythm in the game. I am disappointed with our performance, that is not the level that we played at in the last group of games.

"I thought we were devoid of energy today. We had a real problem athletically. We seemed fatigued and we never really recovered from a poor start to the game and ultimately have a lot to reflect on.

"My initial assessment is fatigue. That is not making excuses. Bournemouth were better than us, but from our point of view, the three games in six days meant we were lacking in that sharpness and sprinting that they had.

"I may feel differently when I watch the game back. But that's how I feel now. It was difficult to change the team after winning nine in a row. I don't want to beat myself up about that it is a difficult one.

"It was difficult for me personally to think about rotating the team in this moment, but even then with our substitutions they did not make an impact either.

"We made a big tactical switch at half time and throughout to try and invigorate us but it never happened. We have to respond and quickly.

"The big thing for us is we have a week in between so hopefully a chance to recharge our batteries and then attack the
(Southampton) game.

"Yes we lost three points but maybe it is an important marker for us to know that if you drop you level against anybody at this level you will get punished. That is the first time we have done that for a long time home or away.

"Our qualities have been on show
(in the winning run) but I don't think any of our game survived - we were off in every department. When you perform like that you aren't going to get anything from the game.

"We were beaten by the better team. Disappointed from the start really. I thought physically we didn't look anywhere near our best levels today.

"The game in midweek and the run of games we had previously just caught up with us. We didn't look like we had that bounce in our step that we normally have and we didn't perform.

"That yard of pace that we normally have in our own game wasn't there."

They Said

Andoni Iraola said:

"It was very, very good. I am very proud of the players. We played very well and a very mature game. I can't say a lot. It was a fully deserved win. They are a very good team and you can never feel confident because they always push but we played a very complete game.

"Until they scored we played very well. We were brave and created chances. We finished strong and hats off to my players. I can't say anything else.

"It is difficult to find a better win, it is very difficult. We came into this game very thin and everybody has played their part and a little bit more. As a manager you feel very proud. We have very young players - centre-backs and a left-back and Lewis Cook playing out of position - and having to deal with top players. They were fantastic.

"I was concerned coming in because the difficulty of the game is very hard. They are flying. I was quite confident because of the second-half performance at Chelsea. I saw how we are dealing with the difficult situation. We've been very good.

"Justin (Kluivert) has been amazing. His duels and his defensive work was very good too. He scored very, very beautiful goals. I am happy for him and everyone. The club is working on a centre forward but the winter window is difficult, particularly for this position.

"We talked even before the game with the players because to spend all the night travelling on the coach to be here, most of the ones that have come, they were also there against Chelsea in Stamford Bridge.

“So, for sure it has been busy for us. But for them for sure has been very busy also this week and I'm happy that we could celebrate at the end with them I think they could enjoy the game.

"I think the players, we cannot ask much more for the players and I'm sure they've appreciated the job they've done.”

Stats

Newcastle suffered their heaviest PL reverse since the 1-4 reverse at Arsenal in February 2024 and have lost three times at home this season in 11 games - the same number of losses they incurred during the full 19 game 2023/24 campaign.

The Magpies failed to make it ten successive victories in all competition for the first time in their history; 2025 now joining
similar runs of nine games during both 1994 and 2016.

They also failed to match their PL record of seven successive wins for a third time, bowing out on six: the seventh occasion after 1994 (twice), 1996, 2012 and 2022.

This is the second time this season that Eddie Howe's side have conceded three goals in the second half of a PL game, also doing so after half time in the 3-3 home draw with Liverpool.

Justin Kluivert registered the seventh PL hat-trick by an opponent at SJP after Dwight Yorke (Aston Villa), Michael Owen (Liverpool), Paul Scholes (Manchester United), Somen Tchoyi (West Bromwich Albion), Ferran Torres (Manchester City) and Chris Wood (Nottingham Forest).

Bruno Guimaraes scored his second PL goal of the season - like the first a header at the Leazes End. The Brazilian now has 18 PL goals for the club, level with colleague Anthony Gordon.

Alexander Isak failed to add to his club record scoring run spanning eight consecutive top-flight league games.

An eighth Premier League booking of the season means that Joelinton will serve a two game ban unless he can avoid a further two cautions in the next 10 PL games.

Waffle

Newcastle's run of nine victories came to a crashing end on Saturday lunchtime, Bournemouth punishing a sloppy home side to leave Tyneside with a deserved and comprehensive win.

Justin Kluivert eclipsed any of his father Patrick's games at St. James' Park with a hat-trick; Milos Kerkez rubbing salt into the wounds with a fourth goal at the end of second half added time.

The Magpies had failed to beaten the Cherries in any of their last five Premier League meetings and that soon looked like becoming six; Eddie Howe's lack-lustre team undone after just four minutes when Martin Dubravka had to push away Dango Ouattara's effort.

Antoine Semenyo wastefully flashed his shot over the bar from the rebound that time, but two minutes later he teed up Kluivert to tuck a low effort into the far corner of the Gallowgate net.

A United side unchanged for the third successive league game did level through Bruno Guimaraes on 25 minutes, but that was a rare piece of proficiency on a day when the visitors continually exploited our increasingly ham-fisted attempts to play out from the back.

A poor corner from Anthony Gordon on the right was blocked and when the taker won another, Lewis Hall produced a superior delivery for Bruno to head home powerfully from near the penalty spot, although 'keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga probably should have saved it.

The flow of play remained predominantly towards the home goal however and Kluivert bagged a routine second  a minute before  half-time, after Bruno was needlessly dispossessed by Ouattara.

Unavailable due to illness in midweek, Fabian Schar replaced Sven Botman for the second half as United looked to establish some sort of supply route to a front line scarcely involved during the opening 45 minutes.

Schar's suicidal pass across his own box almost gifted the Cherries a third, before Outtara converted a cross just after the hour following a passage of play when Newcastle were incapable of clearing their lines after Ouattara had shot against a post from almost on the right hand byline.

That goal was eventually ruled out after VAR determined the ball had gone out of play for a corner before Sandro Tonali's attempted clearance.

The let-off should have seen the hosts pile on the pressure against a team with little experience on their bench and numerous bookings on the field, but any meaningful Magpies momentum failed to materialise as Bounemouth claim close several times - Dubravka foiling Brooks at his back post.

Gordon's blockbuster was blocked by Dean Huijsen but Cherries custodian Kepa had little to do as his side time and again outmanoeuvred Newcastle - Alexander Isak enduring one of his quietest games for the club and having no opportunity to extend his club record top-flight scoring run.

Another regrettable allowed Kluivert to thump in his third before Milos Kerkez fired home the fourth to complete a thoroughly deserved victory for a side who matched our famed intensity and isolated both full backs in a way reminiscent of our most recent loss, at Brentford in November.

Anticipating a club record tenth successive win, instead shell-shocked home supporters witnessed Newcastle's heaviest loss here since Manchester City scored four without reply in December 2021.

More recently, this home capitulation was reminiscent of Boxing Day 2023, when Nottingham Forest trampled through our defence at will when winning 3-1
in another 12.30pm kick-off. That day it was a former Magpie - Chris Wood - who collected the match ball, rather than the son of one.

United ended the day fourth in the table, while Andoni Iraola's side
sat one point behind after lengthening their own unbeaten run to ten PL games - six of which have come away from home. Sunday's demolition of Ipswich Town then saw the Magpies drop to fifth.

That achievement is made even more impressive given a lengthy injury list that includes a trio of strikers with a combined transfer price tag of over £65m.
If he wasn't already, then expect Iraola's name to be added to managerial wish lists both in the Premier League and further afield; this was a perfectly executed example of tactically nullifying an opponent.

For Newcastle, signs of a drop off
had been there in midweek against a Wolves side less adept at unpicking us than Bournemouth proved to be. The absence of injury victim Harvey Barnes from the bench meanwhile underlined the lack of genuine game changers we have in reserve: Joe Willock's search for some sort of form during another of his periodic appearances is painful to watch.

After a whirlwind few weeks it's a relief for players (and fans) to have some respite
in the shape of a blank midweek. Saturday's visit to basement side Southampton is a well-timed pick-me-up, United looking for what would be their fourth consecutive league and cup victory at St.Mary's.

A bad day at the office then and a pertinent reminder that the two goal lead we currently have over Arsenal in the Carabao Cup could rapidly diminish, were we to suffer a
nother collective failure as happened today. Check those hotels are booked on cancellations, just in case.
