8 mins Grant Smith's
long kick upfield was headed down by Cameron Congreve to Corey Whitely, who got
away from Kieran Trippier and Lewis Miley and played a short forward pass to the
unattended Congreve, towards the edge of the box at the Leazes End.
Miley attempted to disrupt his progress but Congreve shrugged him off and worked
the ball on to his left foot before hitting a shot that looked to bounce over
the diving Martin Dubravka. 0-1
16 mins William
Osula raced forward to collect Miley's defence-splitting pass down the centre of
the field. Smith came to the edge of his area and Osula skipped inside him but
then encountered two covering defenders.
His attempted shot (or pass) overshot Harvey Barnes on the left hand side of the
box but he was able to control the ball and circle back round before laying it
off to Matt Targett. Approaching the Bromley area, he slipped a pass to Lewis
Miley, who had time and space to advance on goal before unleashing an
unstoppable right-footer that zinged past Smith and into the far side of the
net.
The scorer's low-key celebrations may have reflected the responsibility he'd
taken for allowing the visitors to create their opener. 1-1
Half time: Magpies 1 Ravens 1
49 mins An
intricate series of passes commencing with Targett to the left of the Bromley
Box included Anthony Gordon, Sean Longstaff, Miley and Miggy Almiron. Trippier's
dinked cross from the right was cleared from the six yard line but fell to
Targett, who tumbled under the challenge of Ben Thompson as he moved across the
box and tried to set Miley up for a shot on goal.
Amid no more than mild protests a penalty was awarded and a slightly stuttering
run-up, Anthony Gordon's firmly-struck effort sent Smith the wrong way as
he moved to his left. 2-1
61 mins Idris Odutayo
was caught in possession by Almiron midway in the Newcastle half and Miley's
quick pass found Bruno moving towards the centre circle. Reaching halfway he
pushed the ball out to the right flank, where William Osula had space to
advance.
With Callum Reynolds back-pedalling, the Dane cut in from the wing to the box
and after a step over, rattled home a memorable left-footed effort from 15 yards
to his evident delight. 3-1

Eddie Howe
said:
"We
wanted to get through and win the game, and the players’ attitude
has to be right. If the attitude is not right, you won’t get
through.
"We always pride ourselves
on that and I thought the lads responded really well.
"It wasn’t a perfect performance from us, we’re not deluded
and we know we can do a lot better, but we showed the mental
qualities needed and we had enough quality to get through.
"It was important we responded (to conceding). The
longer it goes on the more anxiety can creep in."
"It was a great response from that goal. It was a real test of
nerve for us – how were we going to react?
"It was really pleasing to see us equalise early, and I think
that settled us down. From that moment, we were pretty good.”
On Lewis Miley:
What a brilliant finish from Lewis Miley. From that moment we
settled into the game.
"Lewis played very well. He brings loads of composure and
quality on the ball."
On William Osula:
"It was a big moment for Will. Any striker wants to score when
they go to a new club – they want to score early just to settle
them down. He’s been waiting and waiting, and needing that goal
really.
"It was a spectacular one when it came – what a strike from
him. I’m delighted for him personally, he needed that.
"I feel a little bit for him because in the two games that he's
started here - Wimbledon and Bromley today - he's played against a
back five and had minimal space, with a congested backline.
"We have a lot of the ball, but we're working in limited space
areas and that's not really Will's best asset.
"His best asset, as
you saw from the goal, is his pace and he can score. We have seen
that regularly in training, he can score, he's a good finisher.
“I think you have to be
patient with all the players because everyone develops at different
rates. As long as I see the right attitude and the right commitment
to the process, I'll back a player and I'll wait until the time is
ready for them to step into the team.
"We always, me and the
players and the coaches, we go on a journey, respective journeys
with players. It's never a straight line, there are always ups and
downs on the way.”
On
Trevan Sanusi:
"He needs to add the physicality that he'll need to survive -
people will target him. His end product needs to get better; we will
continue to work with him on that."
On the substitutions:
"Bruno and
Joelinton was planned. It was pre-planned as much as you can,
because you can always change your mind, but it’s something I
always wanted to do with those two.
"It was different with Harvey Barnes – that wasn’t planned.
He felt a muscle problem, so we had to withdraw him at half-time.”
On player
omissions:
"Joe (Willock) just
felt something in training yesterday. It was a muscular problem. I
don’t think it’s serious, but it was enough for us not to take
the risk with him today.
"It’s similar with Alex(ander Isak), Sven (Botman)
and Jacob (Murphy) – it’s similar with all four of
them.”
On Martin Dubravka:
“There’s no fresh update
with Martin, but I don’t expect there to be one. Touch wood, I
hope Martin will stay. I don’t think that will change.
“We’ve had discussions about
his future, but I think we’re very relaxed. As I said previously,
he’s never said that he wanted to leave.
“I think he’s enjoying
playing and enjoying the moment that the team is in. So, I don’t
expect any major announcement. We hope everything will die down, and
he will be very much part of our future.”
Bromley Head Coach and ex-Magpie assistant manager Andy Woodman said:
"It was nice to have a little bit of hope. We had a little bit of the
romance of the FA Cup today and I’m really chuffed about that.
"“I’ve been saying to Cam (Congreve) he needs to be more
positive in the final third and driving him mad to get that into his game. He
picked the right stage to do it. I’m chuffed for him.
"Who knows if we'd have got that (second goal).
"We conceded when we had a man off the
pitch. I’ll be up late tonight thinking if we’d had 11 players on the pitch
who knows ? The FA Cup allows you to dream big.
"They’re a class team, class staff
and class club. We gave them a game. We had to be patient and disciplined. To
get beaten by the quality of goals, I’m proud of my team. The way we got
beaten was the right way to get beaten.
“I had a little moment this morning. This
time last year we were playing at Maidenhead and now we’re playing at St
James’ Park.
"I had a little moment today and I’m really proud of the journey. I was
chuffed for the players.
"It was lovely. We got
the goal that gave us a little bit of hope. That's what the FA Cup is
about."
On Eddie Howe and his team:
"I’m hoping I’ve played my
part and they give me a pat on the back because I’ve let him go through to the
next round. I always want him to get a bit of silverware.
"I really hope so because it has been a
monkey on the club’s back for many years and nothing would give me greater
pleasure, particularly Eddie and his staff and the team of players.
"They’re good human beings, you can tell that.
"I had a chat with Sean Longstaff, who I’ve known since he was a small
boy and to see players you know and people you know at a football club – not
just the players and the staff, but the people around the club.
"I really would, probably as much as any Geordie fan, be hoping they can
lift a trophy this year, for sure.
"I was blessed to work for Newcastle. I'm going back to some lifelong
friends I made up here for a big curry; that's just what the Geordies are
like....a beautiful city."
Newcastle made it eight
successive victories in all competitions for the first time since
2016, when they won nine off the belt during their Championship-winning
season.
This is the fifth* time that United have won eight in a row during the
Premier League era:
Nine games: last game of 1993/94 + first eight games of
1994/95.
Nine games: September to November 2016
Eight games: September to October 1995
Eight games: February to March 2005
Eight games: December 2024 to present
(*An eight game winning run from October to December 2022 included a
penalty shootout success).
William Osula hit his first competitive goal for the club, continuing
his liking for the FA Cup. He's now scored seven times in this competition
in six outings (five starts), today's adding to three for Derby County and
Sheffield United.
Osula became the second Danish-born player to score in the FA Cup for the
Magpies after Peter Lovenkrands, who bagged a hat-trick here against
Plymouth in January 2010. Fellow countrymen
Benny
Arentoft, Bjorn Kristensen, Frank Pingel and Jon Dahl Tomasson all failed
to find the net.
Anthony Gordon registered his 20th league and cup goal for
Newcastle, netting for the third consecutive game in three different
competitions. He'd never scored in three successive senior appearances
during his career before today.
Lewis Miley got his second, following on from the strike
against Fulham in the Premier League at the same end of the ground back in
December 2023.
17 year-old winger Trevan Sanusi made his senior competitive bow,
starting off on the left flank and later moving across to the right.
There were Magpie debuts in the FA Cup for Sandro Tonali, William
Osula, Matt Targett, Lloyd Kelly and Trevan Sanusi. Tonali and
Sanusi had never played in the competition at all.

There was a late
substitute appearance for Bromley's Levi
Amantchi - a self-confessed Magpies fan who spent time at Wallsend
Boys Club and played for Blyth Spartans. He reportedly had trials at
Newcastle's Academy and played for Boro U21s against us in September 2020.
Fellow striker Olufela Olomola remained on the bench for Bromley,
He played
once for Newcastle U18s as a trialist back in May 2014.
That followed his release by Arsenal, after which he joined Southampton -
scoring for the Saints U23s against Newcastle during December 2016.

A memorable first Newcastle
goal from William Osula confirmed his side's progression to the Fourth Round of
the FA Cup - giving Eddie Howe a first home success in the competition as
Magpies boss.
His previous tie in the competition at SJP ended in a 0-1 loss to League One
Cambridge United in 2022 and he could have been excused for fearing the worst
when League Two Bromley scored.
Cameron Congreve's eighth minute shot from the edge of the box deceived Martin
Dubravka in the Leazes goal to the delight of around 3,000 visiting fans in what
was the first-ever meeting of the Magpies and Ravens.
A home line-up retaining Dubravka and Joelinton from the side that defeated
Arsenal in midweek soon came close to conceding again, after Daniel Imray's
unchecked run down the Bromley right ended with him shaving the outside of the
post.
Normal service resumed however on 16 minutes, when Lewis Miley hit an
unstoppable drive into the top corner of the net after taking a pass from Matt
Targett.
Making his first start since last February, Miley was partnered in midfield by
Sean Longstaff, as Targett joined Kieran Trippier, Lloyd Kelly and Fabian Schar
in defence - the latter following two separate one match suspensions in both
Premier League and Carabao Cup.
Harvey Barnes and Miggy Almiron assumed wide roles while Will Osula was given
just his second competitive start since joining the club, following the Carabao
Cup tie here against AFC Wimbledon.
Having levelled, the hosts struggled to break down the gold-clad lines of
defence with over-elaborate passing moves petering out before visiting
goalkeeper Grant Smith was tested.
Barnes and Joelinton failed to reappear after the break - the former reportedly
picking up an injury. Anthony Gordon and Bruno Guimaraes replaced them and
quickly added pace and poise to the home attack.
Within three minutes of the restart a clumsy challenge by Ben Thompson saw
Targett upended in the box and Gordon calmly stroked in the resultant spot-kick
for 2-1.
Osula then all but ended the contest just after the hour, cutting in from the
right and letting fly with a stunning left-footed effort that nestled in the
corner of the Leazes net.
Lewis Hall and Trevan Sanusi joined the action - the latter making his first
team debut at the age of 17 - and Sandro Tonali also came off the bench late on
as Newcastle closed in on their eighth successive win in all competitions, their
best run in over eight years.
Ex-Magpie coach Andy Woodman applauded his side's fans at the end of Bromley's
first-ever Third Round tie.
Like AFC Wimbledon here in
the Carabao Cup, the outcome seemed
generally satisfactory - with the bonus of scoring a goal that allowed the
visitors to dream big dreams for a few moments.
For the current incumbent of the home dugout, a place in the Fourth Round was
achieved with no loss of momentum despite the wholesale changes to the starting
line-up - not all of which had the desired effect in players advancing their
claims to feature more often in the Premier League side.
Osula's goal will hopefully calm him down a little bit, while Miley provided a
pertinent reminder of his undoubted skill and potential.
