4 mins A passing triangle in the home
half of the field involving Bruno Guimaraes, Jacob Murphy and Alexander Isak
concluded with the Newcastle captain playing a crossfield pass to Lewis Hall
towards the left touchline beyond the Manchester United penalty area.
With Noussair Mazraoui idling in front of
him, the visiting full back took a touch before arrowing a centre that took a
slight deflection towards Alexander Isak, who had jogged forward to take
up a central position six yards from the Stretford End goal. He simply headed
the ball down and in. 1-0
19 mins Hall began the move inside his
own half with a ball infield from the left to Bruno, who exchanged passes with
Sandro Tonali and motored over halfway before finding Anthony Gordon advancing
down the left.
Reaching the box and turning infield to avoid Mazraoui, Gordon picked out Joelinton
with a fine cross and he powered ahead of the inert Lisandro Martinez to
force the ball in from six yards. Replays showed that the Brazilian made contact
with the ball with his shoulder rather than his head. 2-0

Eddie Howe said:
"We
know the hurt this fixture has had for us historically, it wasn’t
lost on us. We didn’t necessarily use that with the players, but
psychologically that was a big step forward for us today.
"I think we need to win games to achieve what we want on
a regular basis.
"Sometimes
you need to do it to believe you can do it and I thought we managed
the game really well and played really well in the first half. I was
delighted with the team.
"We know this has been an unkind fixture to us
for a long, long time. To almost break new ground here and win in
the manner that we did is really pleasing.
"Early in the season we were on the other end of it by
conceding early goals and it makes such a difference (to reverse
that). We gave ourselves mountains to climb at times,
particularly on the road, and it is great to reverse it the last few
games.
"Those goals have helped with momentum and confidence and from
that point we have never looked back.
"(Alexander Isak) has been really, really good.
His all round game is really strong. He can do a bit of everything.
Most importantly he needs to be in the right place at the right time
to score goals.
"Early in the match it was a great cross from Lewis Hall and
Alex was there with the header."
A bemused Ruben Amorim said:
"That
is really clear (that his side face a relegation battle) so we have to
fight. It is a really difficult moment, one of the more difficult moments in the
history of Manchester United and we have to address it with honesty.
"It is also my fault. The team is not
improving. It is a little bit lost in this moment and it is a bit embarrassing
to be Manchester United coach and lose a lot of games. I think people are tired
of excuses at this club. This club needs a shock.
"When you have these kind of moments,
especially in the big clubs, it's really hard to turn things around, especially
when you don't have a lot of time to train the basics, to cope with the
difficult moments.
"So we have to acknowledge our
position, the way you see the league, everybody can beat everybody.
"It
is really hard. It is one of the worst moments in the history of our club, and
we have to accept that. Another loss in front of our own supporters.
"In this moment it is really tough to
turn around results because we don't have a lot of time to train the base of the
way we want to play. In the bad situations you need that base to hold on
to.
"In the second half they really tried, it was more like the value of the
team. We were close to scoring once but they were better.
"Yes we are (too easy to score
against) but also in some moments we had some chances to score and didn't and
that also makes a difference."
Revenge: the Magpies have now won four of the five meetings
of these two clubs in all competitions since the Carabao Cup Final defeat at
Wembley Stadium in 2023.
2024/25 Won 2-0 (a) PL
2023/24 Lost 2-3 (a) PL
2023/24 Won 1-0 (h) PL
2023/24 Won 3-0 (a) LC
2022/23 Won 2-0 (h) PL
(Newcastle won just four of the 21 league and cup games before that
Wembley encounter).
Discounting last season's 3-0 Carabao Cup victory, the last time Newcastle won
at Old Trafford by more than one goal was in February 1972; Tony Green
and Stewie Barrowclough netting in a 2-0 First Division success.
Newcastle have now won four successive Premier League games for the
first time since March/April 2023, when they managed five in a row.
Martin Dubravka has now kept four successive PL clean sheets for the
first time in his career; the best run by any Newcastle custodian since Nick
Pope managed six during 2022/23.
It's now 360 minutes since Newcastle last conceded a PL goal, their
longest run in that competition since reaching 574 minutes between
November 2022 and February 2023.
Eddie Howe's side have scored in the opening five minutes of each of
their last three PL games.
Alexander Isak moves on to 12 PL goals for the season and 43
in total for the club, taking him level with both Andy Cole and Shola Ameobi.
The next milestone is Peter Beardsley's 46.
Joelinton now has 17 PL goals for Newcastle, putting him equal
with Laurent Robert and one fewer than Miggy Almiron.
Isak's
goal made him the fourth Magpie to have netted
in six or more consecutive PL games:
Alan
Shearer: 1996/97
(7 games)
Joe
Willock: 2020/21
(7 games)
Papiss
Cisse: 2011/12
(6 games)
Alexander
Isak: 2024/25
(6 games to date)
And his was the
250th
scored in our favour against Manchester United in all competitions.
One more Isak stat: his 25 goal PL haul in a calendar year is the best by any
Magpie since Alan Shearer hit 27 during 2002.
A fifth PL booking for Fabian Schar means that he misses the trip to
Spurs, before serving a separate one game ban for the Carabao Cup visit to
Arsenal. The threat of suspension for Sandro Tonali is now lifted though
after he avoided censure tonight.

Take a bow
It's not often that we're lost for words, but.....
For this to happen, to happen against these and to happen against these here is
justifiable cause for celebration, but for this victory have come at this point
in the season almost defies credibility.
We've bid a hearty two-fingered farewell to December on more occasions than we
can remember, following a succession of non-performances and miserable return
journeys - often from Gallowgate.
Not since 2014 have Newcastle fans celebrated a year-ending win in the top
flight, but it's fair to say that those present here tonight and tuning in
across the planet made it up for lost time at 9.51pm.
Balanced against the league table, form table and betting odds all
favouring Eddie Howe's side was the indisputable and oft-proven fact that this
was us, here, against this lot. More doom bar than Trafford Bar.
Never mind that Liverpool, Spurs, Forest and Bournemouth had already waltzed out
of here with three points, we were fighting black and white demons in addition
to Red Devils.
An unimaginably glorious opening passage of play by the Magpies left the
illustrious hosts with their shorts around their ankles, utterly bewildered at
what was unfolding around them.
It was two, but four or five wouldn't have been any sort of injustice against an
embarrassingly poor side who for whom Joshua Zirkzee was hauled off with just 33 minutes played - that
humiliation the first time that home fans had been heard all
night as they jeered Dan Ashworth's protégé.
The Dutch forward sloped off down the tunnel, only to be hauled back to
the bench as the delicious disintegration of the Red Devils played out in public
yet again.
Another early goal for an unchanged line-up had seen Isak head home after
just four minutes, after Lewis Hall's slightly deflected cross found him
unmarked in front of the Stretford End goal.
Isak then strode forward only to continue his recent spate of misfiring when in
a one on one situation, spooning the ball into the arms of Andre Onana.
However the lead was doubled on 19 minutes; Joelinton getting on the end of
Anthony Gordon's centre from the left and finishing from similar range to Isak.
Isak fired another into the net that was ruled out before Sandro Tonali hit a
post to conclude a spellbinding move that saw Newcastle players exchange passes
with ease around the area. The bombardment also saw Hall not far away with his
attempt at a third goal here in three games.
A belated response from the hosts saw Rasmus Hojlund fire wide of Martin
Dubravka's goal before a moment of brain freeze from Fabian Schar saw him gift
the ball to Casemiro, who similarly shot past Dubravka's far post. A goal then
making it 2-1 at the interval would have been gut-wrenching.
The second half started in similar fashion and Harry Maguire headed against the
post as things got a little nervy for the United wearing stripes - especially
those looking on who recalled our holding and then surrendering a 2-0 interval
lead here back in 2018.....
Having survived that and replaced the ailing Kieran Trippier with Tino
Livramento, Newcastle regained their earlier composure and retained possession
better, discouraging any comeback notions.
There was one more moment of alarm when substitute Leny Yoro headed a corner
narrowly wide in the 74th minute but the remainder of the game passed off
without incident as the three points and clean sheet were made safe.
A fourth successive win and clean sheet in the Premier League and only a
second league victory at
Old Trafford in 30 visits saw Newcastle regain fifth spot, an excellent end to a
month that began with them languishing in tenth and surrounded by doubt.
"We haven't changed our attacking philosophy in any way" said an
unhappy Howe a month ago, after his side stuttered to a 1-1 draw at Crystal
Palace.
21 goals and seven games later, that philosophy remains intact, aided by some
enlightened collective defending that has a made a virtue of picking a
goalkeeper who was a liability here last season.
Happy new year!
