9 mins Tino Livramento's cross from the
right was cleared to the edge of the area by Nathan Collins, falling for Sandro
Tonali
to blast a fine first-time strike into the Leazes End net from a point level
with the "D". 1-0
43 mins Anthony Gordon's corner
from the right was met by Sandro Tonali, who was off the ground when he
skillfully
guided another first-time effort beyond Mark Flekken from 12 yards. 2-0
Half time: Newcastle 2 Brentford 0
69 mins Gordon's
inswinging flag kick from the Strawberry Corner was headed away from the six
yard box, dropping to Sandro Tonali, whose shot was charged down by Bryan Mbeumo.
The loose ball fell in the path of Lewis Hall, who also failed to get his effort
past Mbeumo.
The full back worked an opening to get a second strike on goal and when Flekken
dived to smother that, Bruno Guimaraes collected the loose ball and laid it off
for Fabian Schar to tuck away. 3-0
90+1 mins Mikkel Damsgaard
outwitted Bruno and William Osula inside the centre circle and pushed the ball
out to Mbeumo on the Brentford right, beyond the retreating Livramento. He laid
a pass across the United box despite the efforts of Dan Burn to intercept it,
setting up an offside-looking Yoane Wissa to side foot into the bottom corner of
Martin Dubravka's goal. 3-1
Full time: Newcastle
3 Brentford 1
Eddie Howe
said:
"I think it’s a good performance, tough game.
"I think the goals were hugely important. Sandro’s first one is an
unbelievable strike and the second one is very difficult to do what he did in
that moment.
"Two great finishes from him and I think those early goals
really helped us, could’ve been more in the second half but we’re delighted
to get through.
"I think it’s brilliant to see from my perspective. He’s a big
signing and you want your big signings to do well and settle quickly.
"He’s been here a while, but has had very little football. Nights
like tonight will build connections with him and the supporters even stronger,
I’m just really pleased for him on a personal level.
"The tweak in position has definitely helped him, he is a lot more
comfortable when he is deeper on the pitch.
"He is showing all the qualities that we knew when we signed him. It
is just about finding the right balance for him and the team.
"I think my focus was just on tonight and trying to get through. Of
course we’ve been able to do that, then you’re looking at the draw and
seeing the teams left in.
"It’s going to be a really tough game in the semi-final, but I
think for us to be there is the most important thing.
"We’ll take on whoever we get and do our absolute best to try and
get through to a second final, that would be an incredible thing."
On further Carabao Cup suspensions (Sean Longstaff was banned tonight):
"Bruno and Fabby are two massive players for us. They’re very consistent
performers and we’re going to miss them massively, but that’s what the squad
is for.
"It goes without saying that you want your best players available for
the biggest games, and they’re two huge players for us. But we just have to
accept it. There’s nothing we can do about it, we just have to get other
players ready to perform.
"I thought Joe Willock looked bright when he came on today, so
that’s a big plus for him. Sven (Botman) is not too far away, and
hopefully that can be added competition for the centre-back positions.
"We have players returning from injury, and hopefully the likes of
Sven came make a big difference.
"Then we should also have Emil Krafth back in the not-too-distant future. I
think Emil could be back (for the semi-final).
"He’s improving nicely. He’s still some weeks off, but by the time that
comes around, he could be available.”
On Joelinton's injury:
"Joey had a cut to his ear, which I think was quite nasty, and he’s gone
away to get that looked at."
Thomas Frank said:
"We on the day met a better team than us, we lost fair and square over the
90 minutes.
"I think the main bit I'm disappointed
with is the defensive side of the game, we gave - in my opinion - three soft
goals away that we can't give away.
"We need to avoid all three and they
are definitely avoidable, so that's the disappointing thing that we couldn't do
that because it gave us a mountain to climb.
“Overall, you can’t go to St James’
Park and concede the three goals we conceded. We need to do better. I will look
into it, everyone needs to look into it, there’s no doubt about it.
"It sounds a bit crazy maybe but,
beside the two goals in the first half, they had nothing.
"In these cup games you need to try to
stay in the tie and hopefully be better in the second half, but we gave two bad
goals away and then the third one too.
"Our goal for 3-1 was a beautiful goal,
so now imagine if it was only 2-1. The pressure builds in the last four or five
minutes and you never know what can happen. That is the irritating part but it
is what it is.
"I said to Eddie that I hope they win it
because we need a bit of change, eh? With Liverpool and Arsenal winning and
Manchester United and Tottenham to play.
"Why not give a change, I think It’d
mean more to the Newcastle supporters than the rest. I give them my best
support.”
It's now nine league and cup games without victory on Tyneside for the Bees, whose sole
success came in their maiden visit back in September 1934, a mere 90 years
ago.

Sandro Tonali netted his second and third goals for Newcastle in
the same Leazes End net that he'd made a scoring debut against Aston Villa
in the Premier League back in August 2023.
Fabian Schar hit his second goal in this competition, having netted
from the penalty spot during the Third Round victory over AFC Wimbledon.
The Swiss defender gave himself an early 33rd birthday present with his
19th goal for the club in league and cup outings.
Newcastle's
12th appearance in the quarter-finals of the League Cup became
their
third success at that point, all of
which have come at SJP. This is the third
successive season that
Eddie Howe has guided his side into the
last eight:
1974/75 Chester City (a) lost 0-1 (1st replay)
1975/76 Notts County (h) won 1-0
1995/96 Arsenal (a) lost 0-2
1997/98 Liverpool (a) lost 0-2
2001/02 Chelsea (a) lost 0-1
2006/07 Chelsea (h) lost 0-1
2014/15 Spurs (a) lost 0-4
2016/17 Hull City (a) drew 1-1 (lost 1-3 on pens)
2020/21 Brentford (a) lost 0-1

2023/24 Chelsea (a) drew 1-1 (lost 2-4 on pens)
2024/25 Brentford (h) won 3-1
The Magpies face their third semi-final in this competition, having
won both of their previous two:
1975/76 Spurs: lost 0-1 (a), won 3-1 (h)
2022/23 Southampton: won 1-0 (a), won 2-1 (h)
Newcastle are now unbeaten in their last eight League Cup home
ties, which equals their previous longest run at SJP in this competition
(between 1973 and 1976):
2021/22
Burnley drew 0-0 (lost on pens)
2022/23 Crystal
Palace 0-0 (won on pens)
2022/23 Bournemouth won 1-0
2022/23 Leicester City won 2-0
2022/23 Southampton won 2-1
2023/24 Manchester City won 1-0
2024/25 AFC Wimbledon won 1-0
2024/25 Chelsea won 2-0
2024/25 Brentford won 3-1
This was the third meeting of
these two sides in this competition;
United
4-1 winners on Tyneside in 2001 but
beaten 0-1
in West London during 2020 - the latter another quarter-final tie.

An excellent team display at St. James' Park on Wednesday night
saw Newcastle deservedly reach the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup for the second
time in three seasons.
A memorable first half brace from Sandro Tonali trebled his Toon tally, before
Fabian Schar ended the tie as a contest after being set up by the unselfish Bruno
Guimaraes.
There was time for a late consolation from Yoane Wissa after Brentford belatedly
came to life, but the victory was more comfortable than Eddie Howe could have
expected, after his side's recent Premier League loss at the Bees.
Fielding an unchanged side from that which defeated Leicester City 4-0 the
previous Saturday, United
immediately went on the offensive and Joelinton quickly had a shot blocked.
The breakthrough wasn't long in coming after Nathan Collins cleared Tino Livramento's cross from the
right to the edge of the area, falling for Tonali
to blast a fine first-time strike into the Leazes net.
That lead was doubled two minutes before the break when Anthony Gordon's corner
from the right was met by Tonali, who was off the ground when he guided another first-time effort beyond Mark Flekken.
Joelinton played his part in that second goal by jostling with Wissa as the ball
came over to create space, but the Brazilian failed to reappear after the break
- the victim of a stray boot to the head earlier in the game from Collins
after a scramble in the home box.
The third goal arrived on 69 minutes following another corner, Lewis Hall's shot
rebounding to Guimaraes for him to roll the ball across the six yard box and
Schar tap home from point-blank range.
A Bees side who have struggled on their travels this season were curiously out
of sorts for the most part; only belatedly raising their game when 0-3 down and
United had made a further trio of substitutions.
A look at the replies to Brentford revealing their line-up on social media
confirmed the suspicions that the tie wasn't a priority despite the opportunity
to match their best-ever League Cup placing.
Four changes to the team beaten at Chelsea on Sunday night had become six by the
quarter hour mark when Nathan Pinnock limped off -
Sepp van den Berg having already pulled up in the warm-ups.
Ben Mee and Wissa missed half-chances before the latter took Bryan Mbeumo's pass
and shot past Martin Dubravka in the first of three added minutes.
That was far too little, far too late for Thomas Frank's side though, who could
have easily conceded half a dozen goals, despite top scorer Alexander Isak
having a quiet night by his recent standards.
The pick of the chances saw Jacob Murphy's shot strike the Leazes goal frame
before the break and Harvey Barnes whack his effort off a post at the other end,
the ball somehow missing Flekken as it rebounded back behind him.
Guimaraes and Schar were both booked for the second time in this competition and will be suspended for the semi-final first leg.
Sean Longstaff however will be eligible to play after serving his one match ban
and hopefully Sven Botman will be back in the squad and up to speed by then.
Anthony Gordon and Lewis Hall also faced bans had they received cautions against
Brentford, but that doesn't now apply - meaning that yellow cards for either in
the first semi-final wouldn't trigger bans in the second one.
A season that looked uncertain in the aftermath of defeat at Brentford now has
more of an air of calmness around it, following back to back home wins against
compliant opposition. It's as well to remember though that this has been a
"one step forward, two steps back" sort of season ahead of what
appears to be an eminently winnable visit to Ipswich....
Tonali's goals may have hogged the headlines, but another solid display from the
Italian caught the eye - his dovetailing in midfield with the supposedly
incompatible Bruno genuinely encouraging.
