Half time: Palace 0 Newcastle 0
53 mins Having finally
scored from a corner in their last away game at Nottingham Forest, United
managed to notch from a set piece situation. Anthony Gordon was fouled on the
right of the home area and dummied the free kick en route to the Palace goal as
Lewis Hall played the ball forward.
That pre-planned move saw Sandro Tonali touch the ball on towards the byline,
into the path of Gordon's run. Outpacing Will Hughes, Gordon's low pull back
eluded Dan Burn in the six yard box, but struck the boot of Marc Guehi, who was
almost on the goal line at the Whitehorse Lane End. 1-0
90+4 mins From villain to
hero for Marc Guehi, receiving the ball on the Palace left just shy of the
United box, checking back infield and hanging up a right-footed inswinger
towards the back post.
With Joelinton seemingly unaware of his approach, Daniel Munoz attacked the
corner of the six yard box and met the ball with a downward header that Nick
Pope allowed to bounce between him and his near post. 1-1
Full time: Palace 1 Newcastle 1
Eddie Howe said:
"We didn't have any
goalmouth action but I felt we were good in the game. I felt we
nullified them pretty well. In the main, I think we controlled it
pretty well.
"It is really gutting to concede the goal at the end. I
felt like we had weathered the storm and we would see the game out.
We defended crosses well but one moment cost us today. In (the
last) two games, we have let a lot of points slip.
"A killer blow at the end. We defended really well for the
majority of the game. Nick (Pope)has had a couple of saves to
make. We stood up to that really well until the end and it's a
devastating blow for us.
"It was a strange performance from us with the ball. There was
a lot of good in the first two thirds but nothing in the final
third. Lots of set plays. We look a little low on confidence. Losing
Alex was a huge blow to that. Lacking the cutting edge up
front."
On scoring problems:
"It is difficult to answer because we haven’t changed
our attacking philosophy in any way. My teams have always played on
the front foot in attack but today it was a strange performance.
"There was nothing in the final third, but lots of
set-play opportunities and we were without a recognised striker. It
is something we are aware of and we will aim to improve on.
"I know we have players who can score and create and I have no
issues with the players we have. Fully fit Premier League strikers
will cost us an extortionate amount of money we don't have. We have
to back the players we have.
"I have to be careful not to push Callum Willson too hard
with minimal training behind him....I didn't feel bringing him on at
that stage (22 minutes) was something I could do, so I had to
play Anthony (Gordon) up there as I had no natural strikers.
"He did well and it is not down to him we didn’t score. It is
a team thing.”
On Isak's injury:
"It was a contact injury, not
a muscle pull which is good news for us. Hopefully he'll recover
quickly but at this moment I don't know."
On Dan Burn:
"Dan has been nursing an ankle problem for the last few
weeks. It is a gigantic performance from him, all things considered.
I don't think he deserved (to concede) that
goal today."
Oliver Glasner said:
"Everybody feels that we deserved more, that we should have won the game with the chances
we had. We gave Newcastle just one finish in over 100 minutes. We have to blame ourselves that we didn't
take those chances.
"With Newcastle's pace in attack, you always have to take care that you
don't get (punished on) transition situations. Keeping Newcastle on one
shot – it was an unbelievable performance.
"We feel we deserve a bit more (from
this season). It's not that we miss (chances) because we are arrogant,
it's about how we deal with it. What gives me a lot of confidence is
the character of the players here at Crystal Palace.
"For me, yes, we are not happy with the
points. It's frustrating but, on the other
side, we know we will come through it together. The way we are playing is
improving game-by-game and then the results will come."
On Daniel Munoz:
"I spoke to him after the game and said, you should take the ball. Usually
you take the ball after scoring a hat-trick but he's always running there on the
far post. The most difficult one he scored, but it shows his character."
On Marc Guehi:
"Yes, I spoke to him, said two goals,
one assist, maybe I have to try you as a ten."
Joelinton
reached 200 competitive games for Newcastle United in all competitions.
Sandro Tonali made his tenth Premier League start but United haven't won
any of those games since his debut at home to Aston Villa in August 2023.
Newcastle scored the
opening goal in a PL away game for the first time this season at the seventh
attempt. They last
went 1-0 up on the road at Brentford in May before today.
Marc Guehi's OG was the 50th scored by an opponent in our favour out
of 1,544 NUFC goals.
Two of the previous 49 were scored by players who later joined Newcastle:
May 2005 Geremi for Chelsea (h) drew 1-1
Nov 2007 Sol Campbell for Portsmouth (h) lost 1-4
Joelinton and Fabian Schar again managed to avoid the
bookings triggering one game bans. They still have another six PL games to
negotiate before that threat is lifted.

Conceding an equaliser in second half added time
dashed hopes that Newcastle would return to winning ways on Saturday - but
in truth, Eddie Howe's side were barely worth the point that they emerged from Selhurst
Park with.
An away victory had begun to look likely after the hosts managed something that no
visiting player could, getting a shot on target in the direction of Dean
Henderson's goal.
The Palace 'keeper couldn't prevent Toon transfer target Marc Guehi turning
Anthony Gordon's low centre into his own net after a 53rd minute free-kick - and
that looked like separating the sides until a dramatic last few seconds.
Clad in their white change strip, United won a series of corners and enjoyed
plenty of possession but failed to come close to extending a lead that didn't
reflect the distribution of chances created by the two sides.
And they were to be punished; Palace profiting by pumping a late ball into the
box that was headed in at the back post by Daniel Munoz.
A non-event of a game was blighted by early injuries to Joe Willock, Joelinton
and Alexander Isak, with the Swede unable to continue beyond the 22nd minute. That brought Harvey Barnes into the action, replacing Anthony Gordon down the
United right with Gordon switching to centre forward.
Barnes quickly delivered a trio of tempting centres that nobody got on
the end of; Palace missing the chance of the half when a 36th minute break ended with
Munoz somehow shooting wide.
Back in the side after his one game ban, Dan Burn made a vital block in the 62nd
minute and Nick Pope denied Ismailia Sarr and Guehi before Callum Wilson and
Sean Longstaff arrived as the clock began to run down.
But deep into five minutes of added time, Guehi made up for his own goal by
providing the left wing cross that Munoz headed home at the far post; Pope
making no attempt to claim the ball and Joelinton seemingly unaware of the
goalscorer coming in behind him.
The draw left Newcastle tenth in the table which became 11th when both
Fulham and Manchester United overtook them after Sunday's games; Aston
Villa's defeat taking them below ourselves.
A first goal here in three visits was of no consolation to those present, who
again saw a display woefully lacking in both craft and endeavour.
We never looked like outwitting another thoroughly mediocre opponent with a
solitary league win to their name this season - and weren't smart enough to
benefit from the early festive gift that came our way. Up next? a Liverpool side
who have won 18 of their 20 games so far this season....
