Newcastle U21s hopes of a fourth successive win in all competitions were ended by an efficient display from Rotherham United in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday night.

Early chances were made and missed at both ends of New York Stadium, Holmes nodding wide after nine minutes and Newcastle's Jay Turner-Cooke with an off-target header shortly after.

The League One Millers went ahead in the 21st minute; Jordan Hugill converting a close range header following Cohen Bramall's left wing cross.

The Magpies came close to levelling in the final seconds of the opening half; Johnny Emerson doing well to send over a centre that Alex Murphy headed goalward.

Diarmuid O'Carroll's side went in two down at the interval however - former Boro striker Hugill controlling a cross from Holmes and turning to fire past Aidan Harris in time added on.

Newcastle gave themselves a foothold in the tie on the hour, when Emerson latched on to a poor backpass and prodded it past Phillips as he came off his line.

That spurred the hosts on to try and regain their two goal advantage; substitute Ben Hatton twice testing Harris with long-range thunderbolts.

Rotherham managed a third goal eight minutes from full time from rather closer in - Esapa Osong poking home Bramall's low centre at the back post.

Millers boss Steve Evans handed a senior debut to 17 year-old Kane Richardson in the closing moments, the midfielder formerly with Newcastle's Academy.

Rotherham now have six points after two games, assuring them of first or second place in Northern Group H and with it, a place in the last 32 of the competition.

The Millers travel to second-placed Bradford City on November 19th; after Newcastle have played their final game at a pointless Mansfield Town on October 29th.

Victory for the Magpies over the Stags would put them second - leaving them reliant on Rotherham winning at Valley Parade in order to reach the knockout stage for the first time since 2018.
