Goals

35 mins Attacking the Leazes End, a period of City possession ended with Jack Grealish collecting the ball on the left hand touchline, evading Kieran Trippier and playing a low diagonal pass into the box, where Josko Gvardiol had found in space between a quartet of home players.

The Croatian defender scored his first goal of the season with deceptive ease; taking a touch with his left peg to wrong-foot Dan Burn before rolling a low right-footed effort through the legs of Sandro Tonali and inside Nick Pope's far post from the edge of the six yard box
0-1

Half time: Newcastle 0 Manchester City 1

Purely belted

58 mins Joelinton played a simple forward pass from the centre circle to Bruno Guimaraes, who turned to advance down the centre of the pitch before finding Gordon - whose run took him away from Manuel Akanji and in on goal.

Attempting to go round Ederson, the Newcastle man tumbled when the outstretched hand of the 'keeper made contact with his boot. Following the usual delay, Ederson went left as Anthony Gordon powered the ball into the opposite side of the goal. 1-1

Full time: Newcastle 1 Manchester City 1

We Said

Eddie Howe said:

"You always want to win every game, but you have to respect the game. The performance was the main thing for us. We wanted to be ourselves. We played our way, and individually we were much better today.

"I thought Gordon did really well today. There were some brilliant moments. I was really pleased with him. Our midfield was really tested. It was really good.

"It was a really good performance from us. We committed, we were brave. That's our best display of the season, no doubt, with and without the ball. Really good signs for us.

"Anthony Gordon epitomised that spirit and determination to be aggressive. I thought the work he got through was really impressive. Big, long-distance runs prove he is getting back to his best in terms of fitness levels. The team backed that up.

"Anthony probably needed a bit of love today – of course it’s difficult for me to love the players all the time, sometimes you have to give them the opposite in order to get the right responses.

"But ultimately it’s really important that we love all our players and we allow them to enter the pitch in a great frame of mind knowing that they’re free to make the odd mistake, that they’re playing in environment where they feel protected and loved, and I think Anthony’s got that.

"I never see it as coach against coach, I see it as players against players, so all you’re trying to do is give the players the best chance to execute how they play against their opponent.

"If you get it wrong, it can be very difficult against Manchester City because of the level of player and their style of play. It’s unforgiving. We didn’t do a lot wrong in that first half defensively, but the one time we just make a couple of bad decisions, they expose you.

On the penalty decision for Gordon:

"He's clipped, and going at that speed that's all it takes to go down."

On opposite number Pep Guardiola:

"I really admire Pep; I just think he’s very good for the English game. He’s an innovator. It’s so good for us all to go up against him and today was a really good game, really interesting tactically.

"It was our best display of the season and probably the most competitive we’ve been against Manchester City since I’ve been here.

"Manchester City are a very difficult team to press but we were committed and brave. On another day we could have won. I do think we’re a difficult team to contain.”

"He’s really good for the game, having him here makes the game better. Our goal is to try and get closer and closer to City – they’re the benchmark."

AG has his head turned

Newcastle's number 10 spoke post-match to say:

"I don’t think fans will ever quite know what that stuff will mean in terms of, like, I’ve got family in the stadium, of course, watching. I’ve got a little son, so they’re memories that will stay with me forever.

"So yeah, I don’t think they quite know what it meant to me, but I heard about it yesterday, but I don’t think until I seen it today I knew how I would feel. I was almost crying on the pitch. It was a bit of an adrenaline rush.

"Amazing day. Best fans in the country and they carry us through games like that! Eddie (Howe) just said in the dressing room he got a Newcastle United display there.

"I don’t need any persuading to stay here. I’ve been excited to sign the contract for a long time. It shows my commitment to the club which has never been in question."

Gordon then posted on social media "memories that will stay with me forever, thank you."

They Said

Pep Guardiola:

"I said to him (Eddie Howe) I admire him and the way he approaches the game. Newcastle press high and are so hard to play against. They have a lot of legs. When you are a manager you are always polite to an opponent who is trying to do the right things.

"In general, we played really good. Newcastle are impossible to contain over a whole 90 minutes. At 1-0 we made some bad decisions and did not make it 2-0. We would like to have won but we take the point.

"
It was difficult, with their physicality because they defend so deep and they defend so well. After the goal they scored, they had five or 10 minutes but it’s always like that at St James’ Park.

"We made a mistake, and after that they were better, but in the end we had the chances to win.

"We had the chances.
(Nick) Pope was brilliant with the saves, but we take the point - they played really well."

Stats

The Magpies extended their unbeaten home record in the Premier League to 11 games, since a 2-3 defeat by Manchester City on Tyneside back in January 2024.

11 points from their opening six games of the PL season is Newcastle's best return at this stage since 2011/12, when they had collected 12:

NUFC after six PL games - last 12 seasons:

2011/12 12 points, 4th
2012/13 9 points, 9th
2013/14 7 points, 16th
2014/15 3 points, 19th
2015/16 2 points, 19th
2017/18 9 points, 9th
2018/19 2 points, 18th
2019/20 5 points, 17th
2020/21 8 points, 14th
2021/22 3 points, 17th
2022/23 7 points, 11th
2023/24 9 points, 8th
2024/25 11 points, 7th

Seven points from their opening three PL home games represents United's best start to a season at SJP since 1995/96 when they had nine. It's the most since also reaching seven in 2012/13.

Anthony Gordon's second goal of the season was his 14th in the Premier League for Newcastle, taking him level with Joe Willock, one behind Fabian Schar and two short of Bruno Guimaraes.

This was the second penalty success in that total, following his conversion against Bournemouth at the Gallowgate End last February. Coincidentally, both penalties were scored in the 58th minute.

Newcastle lost the toss and kicked towards the Gallowgate End in the first half for the third time in as many games this season - and the fourth game in succession, including the home game against Brighton here back in May.

The Magpies made their 31st unsuccessful attempt to keep a clean sheet in the Premier League against today's opponents. The last time they kept City at bay was a 0-0 draw at what was still the City of Manchester Stadium in November 2006. Steve Harper was in goal, protected by a back four consisting of Stephen Carr, Craig Moore, Steven Taylor and Peter Ramage.

Waffle

A second half penalty conversion by Anthony Gordon gave Newcastle a deserved point against the reigning Premier League champions at Gallowgate on Saturday.

Gordon led the line for United in the absence of toe injury victim Alexander Isak and won the spot kick when caught by City goalkeeper Ederson, coolly dispatching his effort into the Leazes End net.

The visitors got their noses in front ten minutes before the end of a closely-contested first half of few scoring chances - Jack Grealish evading Kieran Trippier and finding Josko Gvardiol in the box, who steered a low effort beyond Nick Pope and inside his far post.

The most cohesive 45 minutes of the season for Eddie Howe's side almost ended on a positive note in added time when Ederson did well to block's Joelinton powerful shot.

A measure of the United manager's satisfaction with what he'd seen though came as he retained the same line-up - in stark contrast to the wholesale changes made during the interval at both Wolves and Fulham.

And that confidence was repaid when Gordon burst into the box to reach Bruno's perfectly-weighted through ball, tempting Ederson into contact and tumbling over.

Barnes then narrowly failed to reach one dangerous centre from Gordon as the Magpies sought to exploit the lift that the equaliser gave both team and crowd.

Momentum began to sway back towards the visitors however; Pope punching the ball away to keep Haaland at bay before the Premier League's top scorer failed to keep a header down on what was becoming an ever-more frustrating afternoon for him.

Substitute Sean Longstaff almost had a sensational introduction to the game; dragging his shot agonisingly wide of the far post, before Pope did well to deny Bernado Silva an added time winner.

Groans that had greeted the announcement of seven additional minutes betrayed the fact that City had regained the initiative, but in truth they never quite clicked and Newcastle kept them at bay without needing to resort to obvious time-wasting or gamesmanship.

Had the penalty - or an equaliser - not arrived, then the committed home performance would have provided crumbs of comfort from defeat, at least in terms of showing characteristics missing in previous games. We've certainly played worse this season and won.

As it was though, something more tangible was evident from the start, with greater momentum and a clear strategy of looking to spring the City defence with balls into the space behind left back Gvardiol - Kieran Trippier and Jacob Murphy both attuned to that eventuality.

Gordon's goal and the point earned were also a deserved return for a performance from United's number 10 far more akin to last season than this - harrying opponents constantly in a makeshift striking role.

In the aftermath of the surrender at Fulham, this game looked to be a daunting task. In the event though, City's visit to Tyneside was opportune; their status inspiring us to step things up and their own lack of a ruthless streak meaning that our shortcomings weren't truly exploited.
