Friday
saw the U21s lose their first PL2 game of the season, beaten by Derby at the
picturesque Causeway Lane home of Northern Premier League Matlock Town.
Having taken four points from their first two games, a below par display from
United saw them eclipsed by a Rams side beaten in their opening pair of PL2
outings.
Clad in their maroon and blue change kit and with Jack Ross taking charge of the
side, Newcastle dominated the opening exchanges before conceding from the first
serious attack that the hosts put together.
That was in the tenth minute when striker Lennon Wheeldon's shot took a big
deflection and looped over goalkeeper Aidan Harris.
The game continued in similar style; United with the majority of possession, but
failing to create any chances of note to test Derby 'keeper Jack Thompson.
That almost changed on 57 minutes; United captain Cathal Heffernan sending a
weak header goalwards from Jay Turner-Cooke's centre that left Thompson
flat-footed only to brush off the post.
Magpies substitute Charlie McArthur should then have equalised in the 65th
minute, but couldn't direct his free header from a free-kick towards goal.
Fellow replacement James Huntley had a shot blocked in added time as frantic
late efforts to find an equaliser were unsuccessful and the well-marshalled Rams
threatened a breakaway second.
