18 secs Ramon Sosa kicked
off for the hosts and played the ball back to goalkeeper Carlos Miguel. He
punted it upfield for Dan Burn to head down and initiate a rapid sequence of one
touch passes involving Joelinton, Sandro Tonali and Miguel Almiron.
The Paraguayan's touch on the centre spot set Alexander Isak sprinting away on
goal. Debutant Miguel blocked the striker's shot, but the rebound fell nicely
for Joe Willock to poke into the empty net, with Tonali and Harvey Barnes
closing in. 1-0
Half time: Forest 0 Newcastle 1
50 mins Forest restarted play after a short break,
Alex Moreno's long throw-in level with the Newcastle penalty area on the left.
Joelinton and Dan Burn looked to get in each other's way as they tried to
complete a headed clearance, the ball striking the former and falling for Jota Silva
to smashed it past Nick Pope via a post from ten yards. 1-1
Alex Moreno's throw-ins looked decidedly iffy to us but pausing the footage is
inconclusive:
At best, his left
foot has the merest touch of a big toe on the ground before release but to
the naked eye it looks like a one-footed launch.
Full time: Forest 1 Newcastle 1
The shootout:
Hudson-Odoi scores 0-1
Isak scores 1-1
Milenkovic scores 1-2
Joelinton saved 1-2
Williams scores 1-3
Guimaraes scores 2-3
Sangare hit bar 2-3
Gordon scores 3-3
Awonyi into orbit 3-3
Longstaff scores 4-3
Newcastle win 4-3
Eddie Howe said:
"It was a tough game. Great start but then I don't think we
really saw the best of us until the last half an hour when I thought we were
excellent.
"The bit in between, we have work to do to get to our best levels.
"There was renewed energy, a different feel to us in the latter
stages of the game. That was everything we wanted to be in that last period.
Certainly you can see we have players still getting back to their best
levels."
On Joe Willock:
"It's a huge blow for him and for us.
"He was the scorer of the goal and he looked good. His absence meant
we had to reshuffle the midfield which is something we didn't want to do in that
moment at all.
"We just hope it's not serious. It doesn't look good. He's feeling a
pain in his thigh so we'll have to wait and see how serious it is."
On Sandro Tonali:
"I thought he did well. He was involved in some lovely little
passages of play.
"He did well fitness-wise considering the lack of match action he's had. I
think he can be really pleased with the reception he got from the Newcastle
supporters at the end. You could see the amount of Italian flags in the crowd,
that embrace with the supporters.
"A lot of emotion coming out from Sandro's side and, of course, from the
supporters' side back. That connection is so important for any player, and he
will be hugely boosted by that. But a great day for him, a great return and a
positive result."
Sean Longstaff added:
"When they missed the last two it made
it a little bit easier knowing that I could afford to miss, but it was a massive
win for us and hopefully we can kick on now this season.
"It’s a massive win. We’ve got no
European football this year so cup competitions are going to be extra important
for us. Hopefully, the draw will be kind to us and we can go deep in the cups
this year.”
Nuno Espirito Santo said:
"We played a good game. Overall, the
performance was positive. We started very badly and the way we conceded was a
setback, but the reaction was good.
"For large spells against a good Newcastle side we had good control of the
game. We dominated and created, even though we didn’t finish too well.
"We suffered in the last 10 minutes and
had problems. But then we went to penalties and anything can happen. We practice
penalties a lot, a lot, a lot! We prepared but then it comes to the
competition."
On playing a much-changed team:
"It was a good moment for them to show
we have solutions. It is important we realise we have solutions. We could be
more balanced. But moving forward we have more options and solutions because we
have a hard task ahead of us."
Willock's strike after 18 seconds is the second fastest
by
any Newcastle player in the League Cup, beaten only by Malcolm
Macdonald's 13 second effort in the Third Round at QPR back in October 1974.
It's also the second fastest goal by any Magpie in the Premier League era
and fastest away from SJP in the same time period:

Sean Longstaff's third competitive penalty in a shootout saw him extend
his 100% record, adding a success against Forest from 12 yards to ones against
Burnley and Newport in this competition.
Joelinton has scored two and missed two of the four he's taken, Anthony Gordon
has two conversions from two attempts and Bruno has found the net with three of
his four pens.
Of those not involved tonight to have taken more than one; Fabian Schar has
netted all three of his, Callum Wilson converted both of his and Kieran Trippier
missed one and scored one.
Alexander Isak netted in his first shootout for the club, having failed to score
his most recent two penalties - at Burnley late last season and at home to
Girona in pre-season.

Local hero
Newcastle made it through to
the Third Round of the Carabao Cup on
Wednesday night, but only after a nerve-wracking penalty shootout ended with
Sean Longstaff dispatching the winning kick.
The black and whites had made a perfect start when Joe Willock scored after just 18 seconds and
Sandro Tonali saw his shot saved moments later as the visitors threatened to run
riot.
Forest made ten changes from the side that won at Southampton last
weekend, while Eddie Howe named ten of the eleven players that ended the 1-1
draw at Bournemouth in his starting line-up.
The one new face was Tonali, included after his 10-month suspension expired the
previous night and evidently in the mood to make up for lost time, to the
delight of the travelling support who had welcomed him back with banners and
Italian flags. "Come una nuova firma" (like a new signing...)
Reality swiftly intruded for United though; forced into a change after just 15
minutes when Willock hobbled off after tweaking his left thigh following an innocuous
challenge in his own area.
Bruno Guimaraes was a fine replacement - and given the captain's armband by
Kieran Trippier upon his arrival - but from then on, United lost their way and
were slightly fortunate to reach half time still ahead.
Parity was restored just five minutes after the restart though; United seemingly
distracted by Alexander Isak returning to the field after treatment as Alex
Moreno took a long throw-in on the Forest left and Jota Silva volleyed in via
the far post at the Trent End.
As was the case at Bournemouth, United looked to the bench for inspiration and
found it this time in the shape of Tino Livramento and Anthony Gordon - the former pushing
forward from right back with Harvey Barnes in front of him and the latter taking
over on the left flank.
As the clock began to run down Newcastle looked more menacing and half-chances
began to appear; Barnes shooting into the side netting, Dan Burn nodding a
corner narrowly wide and Lewis Hall and Gordon both getting shots away that Carlos
Miguel was equal to.
But it remained 1-1 after five minutes of time added on and the omens didn't
look good when Bruno lost both coin tosses for the shootout.
Callum Hudson-Odoi, Alexander Isak and Nikola Milenkovic all netted before
Joelinton's effort was saved. Neco Williams then made it 3-1 to Forest but after finding the net, Guimaraes raised
his arms, went to the sidelines and gave Pope a fist bump that seemed have an
effect.
Ibrahim Sangare looked nervous and hit the bar and after a cool finish from
Gordon for 3-3, Talwo Awoniyi's dreadful attempt cleared the bar and flew high
into the stand - had the old Trent End terrace still existed, the ball may well
have ended up in the river behind.....
That left Longstaff the chance to clinch victory and he did it with a calm
finish, prompting exuberant celebrations on and off the pitch from fans and
players who sensed the significance of the victory.
Exiting one domestic cup competition in the August of a season without European
involvement would have been demoralising and done nothing to aid Howe's cause.
Whether papering over the cracks is an overstatement is open to question, but
the awfulness of Forest's penalties got us off the hook.
The boost to the
winning penalty taker meanwhile will hopefully prove to be a timely one:
regardless of the eventual outcome, Longstaff missing from the spot would have
unleashed a fresh batch of internet invective.
Three games played then and we remain unbeaten without having rediscovered our
fluidity and potency as yet - but providing fans with a trio of heart-stopping
finales so far.
It's never dull round here....
