Goals

(28 mins Fabian Schar straight red card)

45 mins A loose pass from Saints 'keeper Alex McCarthy was seized on by Alexander Isak on the right hand side of the Gallowgate box.

His ball infield fell to Joelinton by the penalty spot, who still had work to do but took a touch before tucking a low effort into the corner of the goal - taking his side's only real scoring chance
.

Half time: Magpies 1 Saints 0

Full time:
Magpies 1 Saints 0

PS:
It was a question of new season, old failings where the SJP clocks were concerned. While the scoreboard clocked ticked past the 45 and 90 minute points and displayed the time added on, the pitchside timers stubbornly stopped. This did work, for precisely one half of one game last season - meaning that it can be done, the club just cannot be bothered to do it.

We Said

Eddie Howe said:

"A massive win for us. We saw how good Southampton are with the ball, they’re a very, very good team. It wasn’t enjoyable for me and we could have been better in possession but the 10 men produced a really good defensive performance, blocking shots and covering space really well.

"Everyone was standing up for each other. We had that ‘no one’s going to break us’ mentality we’re going to need this season.

"It wasn’t an enjoyable game to experience: the result is unbelievable for us, but how we got there was very, very difficult. The sending off changed the game completely.

"We knew what type of game it would be. Before the sending off we had our moments, but we weren’t in control of the game.  I don’t know if a sending off ever truly helps you, but it gets the crowd to inspire you – and that made a difference.

"Last season we scored a huge amount of goals but conceded too many. The guys with ten men produced a really good defensive performance. To a man we were blocking shots, we were covering space very well. On another day we could have played better with the ball.

"Emil
(Krafth) came on in a difficult game, and I thought he was magnificent for us. He’s so reliable, has never let us down, and it was a brilliant performance from him.

"We have to grab that sentiment because the season we finished fourth, we had that running through us. We were written off, we were criticised, we were… you name it, there was a lot of stuff thrown at us.

"Of course then when you’re successful, a lot of plaudits come and that’s dangerous sometimes. I’m not saying you want criticism, but you want to feel like you’re fighting against the odds.

"I’ll certainly take that mindset from today because we were against the odds, we were fighting to try to get something from the game and the players did that magnificently.”

On the home crowd:

"There were moments when I couldn't even talk to Jase - the crowd was that loud! They were incredible: they make the difference. It inspires the players."

On the red card:

"I think it’s really harsh on Fabi, but I think we all know that you can’t give the referee the possibility to even give the red card, so that’s something we’ll learn from.

"The big question is do you want a red card for that. Does Fabi’s action alone warrant a red card? I’m not sure.”

On Bruno Guimaraes:

"Defensively he covered every blade of grass. He was immense today."

On possible acquisitions:

"Of course, we’re looking in the transfer market. We’ve got a period of time left, and we’ll see what we can do.

"Could we do something in the market? Possibly, but conditions have to be right for us.

"As I’ve said all along, we can’t do something that goes against the long-term good of the football club, so we’ll try to make the right decision."

On Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles.

"I wouldn’t expect either player back for months. I don’t want to be too specific, but I think they’re both about halfway through their timetable to return.

"There’s still a long way ahead for both players: they’re looking good at the moment, but there’s a lot of work ahead for them."

They Said

Russell Martin bleated:

"I just got asked there if Ben (Brereton-Diaz) made a meal of it and all that stuff. He stands still and the guy leads with his head. You give someone an opportunity to make the most of it. I guarantee their players would have done the same.

"It's a moment of madness from their player. And it's the reason we have VAR, I'm pretty sure, is to overturn decisions if they're wrong. They've seen it back on numerous occasions in slow motion and that stuff. So it has to be a red card, I guess.

"We had 60 minutes playing against 10 men. We had enough chances to win the game, let alone draw it, but I’m so proud of the team.

"We made one mistake and we paid the price. Maybe it’s that little bit of belief [that’s missing], but I’m really proud of the team today.

"We should have scored three goals today. We brought on every attacking player we had. I don’t think we learned anything new about our players today, apart from the fact they’re new to this league.

"Even when it was 11 v 11 I thought we were so good, so brave, so dominant, in control. (We) Could’ve maybe made more of the moments we had in the final third, but I think that comes with a bit more belief.

"I think today was a big test for the players in terms of coming to one of the most difficult places to try and play in this way, because they’re so aggressive; one of the best teams out of possession – the physical data backs that up, the stats back it up from last season.

"We watched team after team come here last season and get run all over, and make so many mistakes. We make one and get punished. The mistake is collective. I’m asking us to play in that way and we played beautifully, brilliantly for half an hour.

"Then they get a man sent off and it’s a normal reaction – the shoulders relax, ‘it’s going to be a bit easier’. We became a bit slow and lacked intensity, so the ball shouldn’t even end up back with Alex (McCarthy). It shouldn’t even go out for a throw-in in the first place, so we paid for that mistake.

"After that we turned it into attack vs defence. They had pretty much nothing, which is not easy in the Premier League, even against ten men with the threat they have and the athleticism they have.

"I’m really pleased with the players for that. We created, the goalie made a couple of really good saves, they blocked relentlessly. We just needed a moment of magic or luck for the ball to go in, because it should’ve done two or three times, but it doesn’t, and we have somehow lost the game.”

Former defender Martin made it six visits to SJP and six losses, suffering five with Norwich City.

Stats

Lloyd Kelly
became the 268th different player to appear for Newcastle in the Premier League and the 110th to have been born in England.

Bruno Guimaraes captained the side for the first time in a competitive fixture.

United achieved their sixth successive home and away league and cup win over Southampton and are now unbeaten in eight meetings with the Saints. The last loss was at St.Mary's in November 2020 (0-2 in the PL) and Newcastle avoided defeat in the six games previous to that one.

Joelinton
netted his 19th Premier League goal and 26th competitive strike in all competitions for Newcastle. 19 puts him three clear of Bruno Guimaraes and four short of Miguel Almiron.

Fabian Schar
was dismissed for the second time as a Magpie; the first occasion in the closing seconds of a 0-2 PL home defeat to Arsenal in May 2021. That was also a straight red, awarded by Mike Dean following a scything tackle.

He's the fifth Newcastle player to see red in a PL season-opener....and the quickest:

1994/95
85 mins Pavel Srnicek v Leicester City (a) won 3-1
1999/00 70 mins Alan Shearer v Aston Villa (h) lost 0-1
2013/14 45+3 mins Steven Taylor Man City (a) lost 0-4
2017/18 48 mins Jonjo Shelvey v Spurs (h) lost 0-2
2024/25 28 mins Fabian Schar v Southampton (h) won 1-0

Schar's dismissal was the 95th in the Premier League for the club, seven of which were rescinded. It was also a poor way to mark his 150th PL start as a Magpie.

Newcastle notched up victory number 420 in what was their 1,111th PL game.

This is the first instance in the Premier League that we've found of Newcastle having a player dismissed before taking the lead and then holding on for all three points.

There are a trio of games in the PL era when we have achieved that feat:

1998/99 Crystal Palace (h) FAC won 2-1. Shay Given sent off on 14 minutes at 0-0.
2009/10 Doncaster Rovers (h) Ch won 2-1. Zurab Khizanishvili sent off on 85 minutes at 1-1.
2014/15 Crystal Palace (a) LC won 3-2. Mehdi Abeid sent off on 100 minutes at 2-2.

Ben Brereton-Diaz made his third visit to Gallowgate in just 12 months, having appearing in the colours of Sheffield United in their 1-5 loss here last April. He'd been an unused replacement for Villarreal in their 0-4 Gallowgate friendly loss in August 2023.

A smart strike from Joelinton in first half added time gave Newcastle a winning start to the season on Saturday - despite having to play with ten men for over an hour.

What had been an indifferent encounter burst into life in the 28th minute when United gained a free kick in the centre circle - only for the focus to shift upfield to the Leazes penalty area that the hosts were defending.

A clash between Fabian Schar and Saint Ben Brereton-Diaz there that began when the visiting striker shoved the defender in the back ended with the pair locking horns before the Saint theatrically fell to the floor clutching his face.

One onlooker later compared Brereton's subsequent writhing to that of that Australian lass who got zero points in the break dancing at the Olympics. Referee Craig Pawson however swallowed the bait and issued the Swiss international with a red card that a VAR check upheld.

Brereton-Diaz escaping with a booking and incessant barracking from outraged home fans whenever he gained possession thereafter. One Sean Longstaff challenge on the bad actor prompted a crowd response akin to a goal celebration, although a switch of wings for Brereton-Diaz did fool some home followers into booing one of his long-haired colleagues.

The loss of Schar saw Jacob Murphy immediately replaced by Emil Krafth as Eddie Howe's side dropped into a 4-3-2 and a long afternoon of defending to try and grind out a point loomed.

However that script altered somewhat at the end of the half; a loose pass from Saints 'keeper Alex McCarthy falling to Alexander Isak. He set up Joelinton and he finished well to his obvious delight.

Foolhardy though Schar's actions were, they did have the the effect of galvanising colleagues and supporters alike, giving Newcastle a specific task to focus on that they had lacked at 11 versus 11. Taking the lead made that prize even more desirable and the collective work rate was enviable.

That spirit immediately manifested itself in the tunnel at half time when Dan Burn attempted to shake an opponent warmly by the throat and the whole side defended the Gallowgate goal with grim relish after the break.

A plethora of Saints corners were repelled and two opportunities in quick succession for Adam Armstrong to net against his old side were blocked - beginning with a fine intervention from Lewis Hall and then followed just seconds later by Nick Pope's timely tip-over. In between, Brereton-Diaz contrived to fire a rebound wide of the gaping goal.

As full time began to come into sight there was first appearance in our colours for Lloyd Kelly at left back and a return to the sh*thousery that was a hallmark of performances earlier in Howe's reign.

That included Nick Pope going to ground for treatment on a mysterious injury and some intelligent work from a clearly pumped-up Bruno to engineer free kicks where no indiscretion was immediately apparent....

Regardless of Brereton-Diaz's sneaky conduct, Schar has to bear the blame for being suckered into a response that will sideline him for three matches - and increase the pressure on his club to part with an outrageous amount of money for Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi or a comparable talent.

And so, an afternoon when the overcast conditions at times mirrored our mundanity ended on a high note with a morale-boosting outcome. What the performance may have lacked in panache was compensated for with guts and welcome demonstrations that lingering fitness issues for the likes of Joelinton and Longstaff appear to have been resolved.

The lack of wholesale changes to the squad during the close season meant that the team today had a familiar look and the collective spirit unsurprisingly remains. What lies beyond that though in terms of genuine uplifts before our 25 man selection is submitted is the £65m question. Plus add-ons.
