We Said

Eddie Howe said:

"It was a good test for us, A difficult game. Very good opposition.

"I thought we started brightly today and faded after we conceded, Disappointed with the result of course: we didn't do well enough to cause their goal more harm. In terms of the heat, very very difficult to play in and that’s been the unique thing about this trip for us having to train and play in that humidity.

"So lots of stuff to work on and improve. Overall, disappointed with the result, of course, but pleased that we've come through with no injuries.

"
I was pleased with certain aspects. Certain individuals did very well, but team-wise today, I thought we were off where we have been.

On Alexander Isak playing 45 minutes:

"That was scheduled for him. Of course he went over on his shoulder early in the game. It was sore, but he was fine to carry on. We don't envisage any problems, but, of course, we need to check out the mechanism and how his shoulder is, but I think he looks OK."

On Lloyd Kelly:

"I thought he
(Lloyd Kelly) did well. Composed debut. I was pleased for him.

On new signings:

"Our efforts in the transfer market are ongoing. I'm out of touch with all of those movements; I know we're trying. Hopefully, we can bring you news soon. I'm not going to talk about individual deals."

On Yokohama:

"They are a very good team. They are well organized and in good physical condition because they are in the middle of the season. I thought they were a fit team. That is the impression I got from them. They are a strong, good team.

They Said

John Hutchinson - who stepped up from his coaching role when fellow Aussie Harry Kewell was dismissed last month - said:

"
Winning is always a good feeling. And winning gives confidence to the players and the team.

"Before the match, I told the players how much they can show what they have done as a team and as individuals. That's what I told them when I sent them off. The same can be said about today's performance. Each and every player showed something wonderful.

"The match against Sapporo will be held in a few days, and the players have shown so much in preparation for that, so I think it will be very difficult to choose. However, that was the purpose. It was not about who will play in each position again, but about which position they will go to take.

"It was also a match to see that. In that respect, they showed their good points as individuals and as a team. And it gave us the opportunity to fight against a strong team like Newcastle.

"They are in the pre-season, and in this hot climate in Japan, I think it was a match where they showed their strengths in each and every aspect. I think it was not about the result, but each player fought hard to take their position.

"I thought it was a match where we were able to do what we needed to do."

Newcastle lost the concluding game of their Japanese tour on Saturday night, conceding a goal in each half to J League Yokohama F. Marinos at the neutral venue of Tokyo's National Stadium.

Temperatures had thankfully dropped to 31 degrees when the game began at 7.30pm local time; humidity levels recorded at 68%.

A lively start by Eddie Howe's side saw veteran goalkeeper Hiroki Iikura deny both Sean Longstaff and Alexander Isak - the latter falling awkwardly on his shoulder but continuing after treatment.

The Marinos line-up was rather more international than that of previous opponents Urawa, with a trio of Brazilians and one debutant born in Togo.

And it was one of those Brazilians who put them ahead on 34 minutes, Keigo Sakakibara left unattended down the right and crossing for Elber to side foot home from 12 yards out.

Half time saw seven changes to the Magpies side with the Marinos fielding with a whole new XI.

Newly-arrived midfielder Jun Amano then beat Nick Pope from close range to double Yokohama's advantage six minutes after the restart - Jacob Murphy beaten on the byline by Yuta Koiki after believing the ball had gone out.

Pope's opposite number William Popp meanwhile was a spectator in the Marinos goal, disjointed United side struggling to create anything of note as the tempo dropped - only a couple of clever touches from rookie Trevan Sanusi catching the eye before he went off.

The J League side somehow failed to add a third with five minutes of normal time remaining, Ryo Miyaichi somehow unable to direct a header in on the goal line.

United now return to England to conclude their pre-season with back-to-back home friendlies against Spanish and French opposition. Anthony Gordon and Kieran Trippier are expected to feature, while attempts continue to bring in new faces ahead of the season start on Saturday week.
