Newcastle U21s remain winless at the halfway point in their Premier League Cup group campaign, draws with Huddersfield Town and Fleetwood Town followed by this heavy home loss to Forest.

A fine solo goal from Ateef Konate gave the visitors an 11th minute lead, the French midfielder racing down the United left, heading into the area and cutting infield to clip a right-footed effort inside the near post.

The home side had their chances to level, notably when Lucas De Bolle picked up possession outside the box on 25 minutes and sent a dipping left-foot shot just wide of Aaron Bott's right hand upright.

The visitors then doubled their lead just before half time after a fine double save from Will Brown resulted in a corner kick from the right that Justin Hanks latched on to, sending a low shot goalwards from 12 yards out.

Brown was also equal to that, only for the loose ball run along the goal line and Joseph Gardner force it home despite the efforts of a home defender.

A further chance then fell to Konate on the hour mark as Newcastle were preparing for a treble switch; Brown saving with his legs after the Forest player expertly opened up a shooting chance from a narrow angle.

An even more glaring chance for Konate opened up just a moment later, Brown rushing off his line smother the shot after the visiting number nine was clean through.

Konate wasn't to be denied though, getting his second and Forest's third in the 82nd minute following a swift counter-attack from deep in their own half by Brandon Aguilera and Jamie McDonnell.

The Magpies were weakened by senior squad call-ups for Amadou Diallo, Alex Murphy and Ben Parkinson
, while Jamie Miley was missing through injury.

The other tie in Group F this weekend saw Fleetwood Town win 3-0 at Huddersfield Town, an outcome that leaves the Terriers bottom of the table by the slimmest of margins from Newcastle at the halfway point.
