FAC4:
Trip to the Blues
Newcastle were
drawn away to League One leaders Birmingham City in the Fourth Round
of the FA Cup.
Our most recent game against the Brummies was back in the Championship in
March 2017 which ended goalless at St. Andrew's.
That came just two months after beating the Blues 3-1 in the Third Round of
the FA Cup in a replay at St. James' Park, following a 1-1 draw in
Birmingham.
Daryl Murphy was on target for the Magpies in the first tie before Lukas
Jutkiewicz equalised while a Matt Ritchie brace and Yoan Gouffran goal won
it on Tyneside with David Cotterill getting the City goal.
Full Fourth Round draw:
Manchester United v Leicester City
Leeds United v Millwall or Dagenham and Redbridge
Brighton v Chelsea
Preston North End v Wycombe Wanderers
Exeter City v Nottingham Forest
Coventry City v Ipswich Town
Blackburn Rovers v Wolves
Mansfield Town or Wigan v Fulham
Birmingham City v Newcastle United
Plymouth Argyle v Liverpool
Everton v Bournemouth
Aston Villa v Tottenham
Southampton v Burnley
Leyton Orient or Derby County v Manchester City
Doncaster Rovers v Crystal Palace
Stoke City v Cardiff City
Ties are due to be played over the weekend of February 8th, following the
second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final against Arsenal on Wednesday 5th.
FAC3:
William, it was
really something!
Newcastle 3 Bromley 1
Newcastle
ultimately prevailed in the battle of the corvids at St. James' Park on
Sunday afternoon, with the Magpies seeing off the Ravens after Bromley took
a shock early lead.
In the first-ever meeting of the two clubs, Cameron Congreve gave the League
Two side the lead in the eighth minute with an accurate shot from the edge
of the box at the Leazes End.
Thankfully the equaliser wasn't long in coming, moments after Daniel Imray
had shaved the outside of Martin Dubravka's post, with Lewis Miley hitting
an unstoppable drive into the top corner after taking a pass from Matt
Targett.
Targett was one of no fewer than nine changes to the side that won at
Arsenal, Joelinton and Dubravka the only two that started both cup games.
Kieran Trippier and Lloyd Kelly joined the returning Fabian Schar in defence
while the midfield saw starts for Sean Longstaff and Miley.
Harvey Barnes and Miggy Almiron took up the wide positions while Will Osula
was given just his second start, to add to the cup tie at home to AFC
Wimbledon.
But following Miley's strike, the home side struggled to break down the
gold-clad defences with over-elaborate passing moves breaking down before
Grant Smith in the Bromley goal was tested.
A seemingly unimpressed Eddie Howe took off Barnes and Joelinton at
half-time, introducing Anthony Gordon and Bruno Guimaraes and the changes
appeared to work.
Targett was upended in the box minutes after the break and Gordon calmly
stroked in the spot-kick to put his side ahead.
The Ravens were still in the tie but Osula all but ended the contest when he
cut in from the right and let fly with a stunning left-footed effort that
nestled into corner of the net.
Lewis Hall and Trevan Sanusi joined the action, the latter making his first
team debut aged 17 and Sandro Tonali also made his FA Cup debut from the
bench.
A fairly comfortable victory in the end, after the early scare, but ex-Magpie coach Andy Woodman,
was justifiably proud of his side's performance.
The win made it eight straight victories in all competitions for the
Magpies, having scored 24 goals and conceding just their second in that run.
The draw for the Fourth Round was delayed after the Arsenal v Manchester
United tie went to extra-time and penalties.
Full match report to follow.

Enjoying his first home success in the FA Cup, Eddie Howe
said:
"It was important we responded. The longer it goes on the more
anxiety can creep in. What a brilliant finish from Lewis Miley. From
that moment we settled into the game.
"Lewis played very well. He brings loads of composure and quality on
the ball."
Bromley Head Coach and ex-Magpie Andy Woodman said:
"Who knows if we'd have got that [second goal].
"It was lovely. We got the goal that gave us a little bit of hope.
That's what the FA Cup is about.
"I'm proud of my team. The way we got beaten was the right way to
get beaten."

Newcastle U18s are action at home to
Aston Villa in the FA Youth Cup Fourth Round this coming Thursday.
That will be played at Whitley Park
with a 7pm start.
From previous experience the tie will be an "all pay"
affair, with admission £3 adults and £1 concessions payable only
in cash at the turnstiles.
The NUFC official app listing shows that a free live stream for this tie
will be available.
The winners of the tie will be at home to either Cardiff City or Bristol
City in Round Five.
Update:
Another Isak brace
A glittering December that saw
him score eight goals and provide two assists in six Premier League games
saw Alexander Isak voted the PL Player of the Month.
And the Newcastle striker also collected December's PL Goal of the Month
accolade for his magnificent opener at home to Liverpool.
Isak becomes the eighth different Magpie to lift the player award and it's
the twelfth time that the title has ended up at SJP:
Sep 1994 Rob Lee
Aug 1995 David Ginola
Nov 1995 Rob Lee
Sep 1998 Alan Shearer
Dec 2002 Alan Shearer
Oct 2003 Alan Shearer
Dec 2011 Demba Ba
Nov 2013 Tim Krul
May 2021 Joe Willock
Oct 2022 Miguel Almiron
Dec 2024 Alexander Isak
The Swede becomes only the second Newcastle player to complete a monthly
player and goal double, following on from Miguel Almiron in October 2022.*
Feb 2019 Fabian Schar v Burnley (h)
Oct 2019 Matty Longstaff v Manchester United (h)
Apr 2022 Miguel Almiron v Crystal Palace (h)
Aug 2022 Allan Saint-Maximin v Wolves (h)
Oct 2022 Miguel Almiron v Fulham (a)
Dec 2024 Alexander Isak v Lliverpool (h)
* while the player award dates back to 1994, the goal accolade was only
established in 2016 - hence the lack of Alan Shearer (and others) in the
latter list. Update:
Goalkeeper
situation
still unresolved
Despite post-match gestures at
Arsenal widely assumed to be his farewell to the fans, Martin Dubravka
remains a Newcastle player and speculation of joining a Saudi Arabian club
this month remains unconfirmed.
Speaking to the media on Friday, Eddie Howe said of Dubravka that:
"I think he has been in a difficult
position with his contract being up in the summer. There is that doubt and
he will naturally want some conclusion to his future.
"Whatever the outcome, he has more
than played his part in our recent run of fixtures. Hopefully, we can come
to some sort of agreement with him.
"Martin has never said he wants to
leave. He has been a very good professional and it's a credit to him because
it was difficult when Nick Pope was in the team, but he was ready to come in
and perform.
"That's down to how hard he trains
and you can see how much Newcastle means to him. He is very invested.
"I think the right decision will be
the right decision - not just for us but for Martin as well.
"Martin is performing really well
and we want to keep him. He's never said he wants to leave and hopefully we
can resolve things."

Tunnel tussle
-
FA charges
The FA confirm that both Newcastle
and Aston Villa have landed disciplinary charges arising from an incident in
the SJP player's tunnel at half time on Boxing Day.
Both clubs were charged with failing to control their players and/or
technical area occupants, with further charges of acting in an improper
manner levelled at Jason Tindall and Villa analyst Victor Manas.
The clubs have until next Monday to respond.

On This Day in History |
12th January |
Born Or Died:
1948 Brendan Foster born, Hebburn.
A familiar figure in Tyneside sporting circles for many years,
Toon fan Bren's talent for distance running brought him recognition at Olympic
level and a Bronze medal in 1976.
Two years earlier though, he'd provided a rare moment of black and white
success at Wembley Stadium (pictured above), as he himself recalls:
"My dad took me to my first match at St. James' Park in 1955. I was seven.
It was the last match before the 1955 Cup final.
"Everyone got
a voucher which went into a hat, and my dad won a Cup final ticket for
Newcastle v Man City at Wembley.
"I stayed home and watched it on TV, and vowed that the next time
Newcastle were at Wembley we would all go.
"Twenty years later, Newcastle faced Liverpool in the final. The FA asked
me to run before the match at Wembley - I'd broken the world record the year
before.
"I got a dozen tickets from the FA, and took my dad, my brother and all
our mates. I won the race in a black-and- white vest given to me by Dave
Bedford and then threw it into the crowd.
"We lost 3-0 in the FA Cup final, Kevin Keegan murdered us."
2000 Sven Botman born, Badhoevedorp, Netherlands (2022-date)
Scouted by Newcastle and the subject of a bid in January 2022, the Magpies
got their man six months later when the central defender arrived from Lille
at a claimed cost of £35m.
Born in a suburb of Amsterdam, Sven began his career in the Ajax Academy and
played second tier football for them aged 18.
Featuring for their Ajax first team in summer 2019, Botman spent the next
season on loan at Heerenveen before a £7.5m switch to Lille followed in July
2020.
Sven's first year in French football brought Europa League action and ended with
title success, which saw him gain Champions League experience in 2021/22.
First sighted during a low-key kickabout against 1860
Munich in Austria, Botman made a successful Premier League bow at home to
Nottingham Forest on opening day.
It would take until January 2023 before he finished on the losing side for
his new club at the 20th time of asking - playing a significant part in a
dazzling start to the season .
The following season saw Sven in the side as United returned to Champions
League action with a 0-0 draw away to AC Milan.
However, a knee injury sidelined him for three months after scoring
his first goal as a Magpie in an 8-0 win at Sheffield United.
Returning late in 2023, Botman was too
late to help his colleagues extend their European adventure
and endured a Carabao Cup exit at Chelsea in only his second
game back.
Sven left the pitch after an FA Cup Fifth Round defeat at Manchester
City in March 2024 and it was revealed that another known knee injury
required surgery.
He was missing for over nine months before returning for a league game at
Tottenham Hotspur in early 2025.
Internationally, Sven represented his home nation from the U15s to the U21s
and earned a maiden senior call-up in
2020 without getting on to the pitch.
Despite his excellent club form, he failed to
earn a seat on the Dutch plane to the Qatar World Cup in November 2022.
International selection did follow in June 2023, Botman an
unused substitute for two UEFA Nations League ties.

A week after being dumped out of the FA Cup by lower league Chester
City, Newcastle were knocked off the top of Division Two by Geoff
Hurst's Blues.
Defender John Brownlie had already cleared off his own line before
veteran Ron Harris crossed for Mike Fillery to head past Steve Hardwick.
David Barton then turned a centre past his own 'keeper early in the
second half before a solo run from Clive Walker soon after ended in a
third.
Walker then set up Tommy Langley to make it 0-4 from close range
before the Magpies had come anywhere Petar Borota's goal.
United's Kings Road misery was captured by the BBC "Match of the Day"
cameras, who returned the following season for the corresponding fixture - and
witnessed a 6-0 home victory.

In-form forward Graham Sharp headed Everton ahead before
some awful defending allowed Derek Mountfield to scramble home a corner
from close range.
Future Magpies Paul Bracewell and Kevin Sheedy combined for the
latter to make it 3-0 before Glenn Roeder cleared Peter Reid's effort off the line. Sheedy then netted from close range via a post as the Toffees
topped the table - and would remain there for the rest of that season.
This Goodison debacle was to be on-loan
striker Ian Baird's last United game and he was promptly sent back to
Southampton.

and met Steve Watson's cross to beat Bobby Mimms.
The Gallowgate scoreboard displayed "That's the Magic of Mitchell"
to mark the occasion.

1996 Amid much press speculation, Kevin Keegan ruled himself of
the running for the vacant position of England manager.
2000 Brothers Sarfraz and Shahzad Najeib
were chased from the Majestyk nightclub in Leeds by a group of
men, with Sarfraz left unconscious with a fractured nose, leg and
cheekbone after an assault in the street.
Among those later charged in connection with the
matter were future Newcastle players Lee Bowyer and Jonathan Woodgate.
Both were found not guilty of grievous bodily harm but Woodgate was
convicted of affray.
Bowyer was branded a liar by the judge over his
version of events and landed with a £1m legal bill. He later reached an
out-of-court financial settlement with the Najeib family in order to
head off the threat of a civil action.

Newcastle leapfrogged Leeds into top spot despite conceding within 27 seconds, when future Magpie Alan

Michael Duberry didn't improve
his popularity with his team mates with an equalising own goal and was
racially abused by his own fans.
Jonathan Woodgate, David Batty, Lee Bowyer and Mark
Viduka also played for Leeds. Danny Mills was red-carded for kicking Craig Bellamy.

2002 United U19s hit seven goals without reply at home to
Huddersfield Town; Michael Chopra grabbing five, Kevin Dixon and Richard Offiong completed the
rout with one apiece.

The FA charged
Emre with using racially -aggravated abusive and/or insulting words
during an incident against Everton at

However the charge was ultimately dismissed after
conflicting statements were given by Everton players as to exactly what

Allardyce and his temporary charges somehow reached half time goalless.
Cristiano Ronaldo struck a first hat-trick for the Reds though as we fell to pieces, conceding six goals and clearing three more
off the line - Fergie's mob also having claims for a penalty.
Ex-Red, Alan Smith,
got himself sent off in added time to compound what was a truly awful
day.
Future Magpie Danny Simpson played for the hosts in the second half - although he didn't have to do much defending....

2008 Hours
before that Old Trafford humping, Harry Redknapp went public to reject the
managerial vacancy at Gallowgate.
Then-United
Chairman, Chris Mort, would later confirm that Redknapp was offered the position but released his "exclusive" to Sky early on
Saturday before NUFC went public.
2008 There was another six goal haul - but at the right end for the Magpies - as
the U18s walloped Barnsley 6-0 on
Tyneside.
All the goals came in the first half, with James Marwood, Jonny Godsmark
and Frank Wiafe Danquah all grabbing two apiece.

United's scorers were Phil Airey and two from Jeff Henderson. Airey

City's tenth
successive league and cup win over Newcastle is remembered for the Magpies goal that got away, when Cheick Tiote's sizzling
volley at the Leazes End seemingly brought his side level.
Tiote made for the home dugout amid great scenes of celebration, but greater pandemonium followed as referee
Mike Jones was urged by City players to consult with the linesman on the East Stand
touchline.
The goal was chalked off with Yoan Gouffran undoubtedly standing offside, but
wrongly deemed to have interfered with play by taking evasive action to
avoid the ball - Hart claming he'd been unsighted as a
result.

Recovering from 0-2 to 2-2 and pressing for a winner, that terrific fight back

The match was preceded by a minute's applause

New boys Henri Saivet and Jonjo Shelvey weren't involved, but

Blades side bottom of the table broke their seasonal duck as Newcastle extended
their own winless run to eight league and cup games.
Short of putting the ball in their own net Steve Bruce's

one of his former clubs.
Ryan Fraser was needlessly booked twice in just four minutes, before VAR dubiously decreed a deliberate handball by
Federico Fernandez and Billy Sharp beat Karl Darlow from 12 yards.
