2024/25:
Devils dispatched
Newcastle 4
Manchester United 1
 Match
action is online here A
fourth successive Premier League victory continued Newcastle's charge for
Champions League qualification on Sunday, a comprehensive dismantling of Manchester United
propelling them into fourth place.
Overseen by coach Jason Tindall in the absence of the hospitalised Eddie
Howe, the Magpies boasted with an unchanged line-up for the fifth game in
succession.
Alexander Isak teed up Sandro Tonali to volley past goalkeeper Altay Bayindir
after 24 minutes, the Premier League debutant then denying our top scorer a
second goal that would have reflected the balance of play.
However a rare venture into the home box on 37 minutes saw Diogo Dalot play
in Alejandro Garnacho, who steered his low shot beyond Nick Pope and into
the net.
The hosts redoubled their efforts after the interval and ruthless
pressing on the visitor's goal was rewarded within five minutes of the
restart.
Bruno Guimaraes found Tino Livramento
on the left just inside the opposition half and the full back who spent much
of the game in an attacking role shimmied past Dalot's before laying a
low pass across the six yard box that reached Jacob Murphy beyond the back
post.
His astute layoff back across goal was met by the advancing Harvey Barnes
who converted from close range at the Gallowgate End.
The winger was celebrating his third goal of the week quarter of an hour
later, capitalising on Noussair Mazraoui's stumble and setting off for goal before supplying a
memorable finish.
And on a day when Wor Flags paid tribute to Kevin Keegan, Bruno Guimaraes
won his one on one with Bayindir in a manner reminiscent of KK's debut
strike against QPR's Peter Hucker back in August 1982.
That rounded off the scoring
and sealed Newcastle's first league double over the Old Trafford side in 94
years; Anthony Gordon returning from injury and suspension to appear in the
closing stages.
Next up for the black and whites is their game in hand against Crystal
Palace at Gallowgate on Wednesday night, where another maximum point haul
would lift them up to third - five points clear of the team in sixth place.
Team: Pope, Trippier (Krafth 78), Livramento,
Schar, Burn, Joelinton (Longstaff 85), Tonali, Guimaraes (Miley 85), Barnes,
J.Murphy (Gordon 78), Isak (Wilson 78).
Subs n/u: Dubravka, Targett, Neave, Osula.
Booked: None
Goals: Tonali 24, Barnes 49,64, Guimaraes 77
A fourth successive PL appearance without a caution meant that Joelinton
remains on nine bookings and needs to avoid censure against Crystal Palace
in order to avoid an automatic two game ban.
The threat of a similar punishment for Dan Burn has now passed, with him on
eight bookings but just one game away from the 32 game seasonal cutoff
point.
The nearest Joelinton came to censure was with the game stopped and his
substitution indicated; Joe arguing with Manuel Ugarte as Bruno frog-marched
him from the field and indicating his willingness to continue the exchange
with the Uruguayan off the pitch....
MUFC:
Bayindir, Yoro, Lindelof, Mazraoui (Shaw 78), Amass (Dirgu 55), Eriksen,
Ugarte, Dalot, Fernandes (Mainoo 82), Garnacho (Mount 55), Zirkzee (Hojlund
55).
Subs n/u: Casemiro, Heaton, Heaven, Maguire.
Booked: Ugarte, Yoro
Goal: Garnacho 37
Crowd: 52,252. The visitors took the full 3,200
places in L7 but some remained unoccupied.
Ex-Magpies in attendance included Nicky Butt, David Ginola, Rob Lee and Alan
Shearer. England boss Thomas Tuchel was also present.
Although the man in question had been on Tyneside less than 48 hours
before, Kevin Keegan wasn't present as
Wor Flags staged a tribute to Kevin Keegan across three side
of SJP before kick-off.
Jason Tindall said:
"I said to the players before the game we need a performance the manager would
be proud of.
"I’ve just seen a message from him before I came to do the press,
congratulating the performance from everybody and from the team. He was able
to watch it, and I’m sure that would have lifted his spirits.
"He trusted the decision we’d make, we’ve been working together for
a long time. He was able to communicate earlier on in the week, then put his
trust in everyone to put in a performance he’d be proud of, and the boys
delivered.
"We had to make a couple of tweaks at half-time,
we were a few yards off on our press. The lads went back out and
delivered their tactical executions superbly well.
"I'm super proud of the players. Not
surprised because we've got a fantastic group of players - we've
got some great leaders within that.
"It's times like this when the manager is not there, when he's
not there to lead the team, you have to step up individually and
collectively.
"Everybody certainly did
that today, so really, really proud of the players to go out and
deliver the performance that they did today against a good
Manchester United team.
"I think the team probably picked itself in recent
performances.
"Eddie put his trust in
myself and the work and the rest of the support staff to go out and
deliver the performance. He trusted that if decisions needed to be
made and tweaks needed to be made, that we'd make the right choices
and make the right decisions.
"Thankfully, that happened
today and as I say, I'm sure he'll be really proud of it.”
Asked about Howe's
condition:
"No updates. I haven't really had the opportunity to speak to him
properly."
Tindall oversaw the side with coach Graeme Jones for the second time, the
pair previously taking charge in November 2021 for a 3-3 home draw with Brentford.
That came about when Howe tested positive for COVID ahead of his first game
as Magpies boss. He watched the game on TV while isolating in a nearby
hotel.

Newcastle have now taken six points off six teams this season, Manchester
United following Leicester City, Spurs, Wolves, Southampton and Nottingham
Forest in losing to us both home and away.

three of which have come in the Premier League. He now has four PL
goals to his name.
Harvey Barnes made it eight PL goals for the season,
leaving him second top scorer behind Alexander Isak.
The former Fox now has 13 as a Magpie, taking him level with
Hatem Ben Arfa. He's now two short of a PL half century, adding in
his 35 efforts for Leicester City.

Citizen's
test for Stiffs

With their place in the one-off
playoff round confirmed,
Newcastle U21s play their final regular game of the PL2 season this evening (7pm).
The opponents at the Joie Stadium are a Manchester City
side who sit two points clear of their nearest challengers Fulham at
the top of the table, enjoying a vastly superior goal difference
over the Cottagers.
At the same time as City are hosting Newcastle in their last game,
Fulham close out their fixtures against Blackburn Rovers at Ewood
Park.
The Magpies are currently ninth but
could end up anywhere between fifth and 11th.
The top eight teams then host
one additional playoff round game each against the sides finishing
ninth to sixteenth, with the first place finisher hosting the
16th, second the 15th etc.
Those 16 teams won't be confirmed until after the final two regular
games of the season take place on Friday.
Advance tickets were available online here
but went off sale over the weekend. It's unclear whether walk-ups will be
accepted on the night.
This will be the first time that any Newcastle side has played at
City's purpose-built ground for development and Women's teams that
opened in 2014.
PS: U21 midfielder Ellis Stanton has confirmed his release by United
via social media in recent days.

Dallas
defeat
Sao Paulo U19s 5
Newcastle U19s 0
United U19s endured a difficult afternoon in the Cotton Bowl on Sunday, as
they commenced their Dallas Cup participation with defeat by Sao Paulo.
The Brazilian side were beginning the defence of their Super Group title and
went ahead within 90 seconds, only to then concede a seventh minute penalty
that Kasey Wooster dragged wide of the target.
Sao Paulo then doubled their lead after 16 minutes in blazing sunshine and
it was 0-3 by the 38th minute.
Into the second period and a free kick conversion from distance increased
United's agony and it was 0-5 on the hour, the scoring thankfully complete
at that point.

Milestone reached:
more funds needed
Former Magpie Alan Shearer appeared on BBC Breakfast last week
here as the
charity fundraising efforts of his foundation smashed through the £7m
barrier.
Those funds helped establish The Alan
Shearer Centre, offering support to over 5,000 people
in the region with profound disabilities and acute sensory impairments.
The running costs of that facility have now rocketed from £250K to £320K
annually, meaning that Wor Al is now calling for additional support from the
public:
"I founded the Alan Shearer Foundation to make a real difference to
the lives of people with a wide range of abilities and complex needs.
"To keep the activity centre free for our members, we now need to raise
an additional £70,000 every year.
"The funds raised enable our members and their families to access
life-enhancing therapies like hydrotherapy and sensory play without
increased strain on family finances.
"Every donation, fundraising event and contribution — however big or
small — helps us to maintain and grow these vital facilities and ensures
that people get the care and experiences they deserve.
"We need to do more if we are to help and support families who require
specialist care facilities.”

Defender extension
details emerge
The Athletic report that Jamaal Lascelles has agreed a
contract extension that will keep him at SJP until summer 2026, not 2025 as
was previously assumed.
It's claimed that a deal for an additional 12 months was done late last
year, but no official announcement has yet come from the player or
club.
The 31 year-old defender joined United from Nottingham Forest back in 2014,
making the first of 251 league and cup appearances in September 2015.
Suffering an ACL injury during a home victory over West Ham in March 2024,
Lascelles is yet to kick a ball this season but has recently returned to
training.

On This Day in History |
14th April |
Born Or Died:
1885 Jimmy Soye born, Govan,
Scotland.
(1906-09)

Right winger who came to
prominence playing for Distillery in Northern Ireland and after one full season
joined Southampton in the summer of 1905.
A year later he was on the move again, this time signing for Newcastle along
with fellow Saint Harry Brown.
However, Jimmy was never able to claim a regular starting place in the side and
was moved on to Aberdeen at the end of the 1908/09 campaign - Wilf Low going
the opposite way in a part-exchange deal.
He went to make over 200 appearances in six seasons at Pittodrie, before his
playing career came to an end when normal league football was suspended during
WW1.

1926 Jorge Oliver
"George" Robledo born, Iquique, Chile. (1949-53)

Chilean-born with an English
mother, George and his family relocated to England in 1932 and worked as a
miner, appearing for Huddersfield Town as an amateur.
Signing for Barnsley in 1943 (along with his younger brother, Eduardo), the
goalscoring form of George brought him to Newcastle's attention and he and
Eduardo joined United in a joint £26,500 deal early in 1949.
Debuting in a 2-0 home win over Charlton in February 1949, his first senior
goal for the Magpies came a month later, hitting the winner in a 2-1 derby win
at SJP.
George became the first South American to appear in an FA Cup Final when united
beat Blackpool in 1951 and a year later, headed the only goal of the game as
Arsenal were beaten and the trophy was retained.
Both he and his brother returned to Chile in 1953, signing for the Colo-Colo club
and winning two league titles. George later played for O'Higgins before finally
hanging up his boots in 1961.
Capped 31 times for Chile between 1950 and 1957 and netting eight goals, George
later worked as a sports teacher and made a return visit to Tyneside during the
1980s.
He succumbed to a heart attack in April 1989 and is buried in Santiago.

1941 Matthew Hogg born,
Dinnington.
(19??-61)
Full back who failed to make the grade at SJP, moving on to Darlington.
Matty later appeared for South Shields.
1944 George Watkin born, Chopwell.
(1960-63)

Centre forward George joined Newcastle in 1960 and played in
the FA Youth Cup winning side two years later, scoring six times.
His sole senior competitive game for United was a 0-0 draw at Bury in December
1962 deputising for the indisposed Barrie Thomas.
Leaving SJP in 1963, George appeared for Kings Lynn, Cambridge City and
Chesterfield before returning to his native North East with Gateshead in 1965.
Living near Consett, he was sadly diagnosed as suffering from Parkinson's
Disease during 2002. He passed away in July 2018.

1974 John Watson born,
South Shields. (1990-93)

Forward who joined from Wallsend Boys Club and came through
United's junior
and reserve ranks to earn a professional deal.
Appearing mostly as a right back while at Newcastle, John made his debut off
the bench in 1-2 loss to already-relegated Hull City at St. James' Park in May
1991.
A second senior outing then came as a substitute during United's 0-3 defeat at
Bari in the Anglo-Italian Cup in December 1992.
Following an unsuccessful trial at West Bromwich Albion, Watson joined Scunthorpe United
ahead of the 1993/94 season.
However things failed to work out at the Iron and he returned to the region to join Gateshead - playing at the
International Stadium in three different spells.
After some time in the USA he returned to play for Durham City, taking
temporary command there in 2005.
Two spells with Whitley Bay, one with Newcastle Benfield and a stint with Bedlington Terriers
(including taking caretaker charge) followed, before John ended his playing
days with Annfield Plain.
Watson worked for Gateshead Council and continued his playing career in local
veteran's football - with 2016 finding him in the Wallsend Winstons Over 40s
side.

1997 Callum Roberts born, Newcastle. (2013-19)
A pupil at Churchill Community College in Wallsend,
striker/winger Callum first linked up with Newcastle aged eight, before joining the
club's Academy as a scholar in 2013.
Debuting at U18 level in a home win over Aston Villa the previous October,
Roberts then netted twice against Stoke City in only his second competitive
appearance.
Rewarded with an U21 debut against West Ham at Whitley Park in September 2013,
a fine display against Liverpool at Anfield six months later saw Callum net in
a 2-5 loss.
January 2015 saw Roberts make his senior bow for the club, arriving as a second
half substitute during the 0-1 away defeat at Leicester City in the FA Cup.
Callum then signed a deal running until 2019 before a loan to Gateshead soon
after. However he made just three
appearances before returning.
Continuing to play for Newcastle reserves, he was loaned to Kilmarnock in January 2017 but failed to find the net
in 11 appearances (five starts).
A rare Magpie first team outing then came in a pre-season
friendly at Preston North End during July 2018, before resuming for the
second string XI and bagging 12 league and cup goals that season.
There was an unexpected return to senior service in January 2019, in a FA Cup Third Round Replay at Blackburn Rovers.
Both he and fellow reserve Sean Longstaff netted in a 4-2 victory at Ewood
Park, but while Longstaff retained his place in the first team, Roberts wasn't
so fortunate.
A loan move to fourth tier side Colchester United followed,
but after just three
substitute appearances totalling less than 40 minutes he was recalled.
Failing to win a new deal at SJP, Callum began pre-season on trial at
Southend United but was almost immediately injured.
Featuring for Boro U23s in the early weeks of the 2019/20 season, Roberts turned up at Lee Clark's Blyth Spartans side.
After bagging a hatful of goals for them, Callum signed
for National League side Notts County during January 2020.
Helping them to the promotion playoff final at Wembley, he
netted against Harrogate Town but ended up on the losing
side.
Two further seasons at Meadow followed during which he overcame fitness issues
and regained his goal touch before leaving in July 2022, when signing for Aberdeen.
Callum's next move took him South of the border, signing for
National League North Scunthorpe United in June 2023.
1999 Tyrique Bartlett born, Zurich, Switzerland. (2016-19)

The
son of South African international striker Shaun, Tyrique
was born in Switzerland while his father played for FC Zurich, but raised in
South Africa and London.
First spotted appearing
for Newcastle's
U23 side in a training ground kickabout against Burnley in December 2016, the
striker scored in a similar game with Kilmarnock soon after.
Following receipt of his FIFA clearance, Tyrique made his
competitive Magpies debut in a Northumberland Senior Cup victory over Northern
League Blyth FC in late 2017.
A handful of other appearances followed for the U23s that season, Bartlett
also making an international debut when representing South Africa at U20
level.
However, ankle ligament problems sidelined Tyrique during the following season
and he was missing until after the turn of the year, marking his comeback with
goals against Reading and Wolves.
That wasn't enough to win an extended deal on Tyneside though and he left that
summer.
Bartlett's next port of call was Cape Umoya United in South
Africa, signing for them during February 2020. However he
had departed by the end of the year and joined Cape Town
Spurs - remaining there until released in 2022.

24 hours after winning 4-1 at Bury, Newcastle
moved on to Nottingham where they took to the field
at The City Ground - Notts unable to use their usual
home venue of Trent Bridge due to a cricket match.
A debutant for United in a much-changed lineup
(with one eye on their forthcoming FA Cup Final
appearance) was Sid Blake - who then converted from
an outfield player to a goalkeeper for the rest
of his career.
The visitors were forced to play 80 minutes a man
short, after Tony Whitson broke his finger in the
opening exchanges.

strengthening the chances that the mackems would

Trailing 0-2 at the interval, the hosts got back

but couldn't force an equaliser - home fans
barracking United for their offside tactics
perpetuated by Bill McCracken.

There were widespread reports that Mike Ashley had agreed to sell Newcastle United for a claimed £300m. According to Sky, the
prospective new ownership was:
"The Saudi fund (PIF), controlled by Prince Mohammed bin Salman
will hold 80% of the club shares, while Amanda Staveley will
hold 10% of the shares and it is expected that she will play
a key role in the running of the club.
"The final 10 per cent will be controlled by billionaire
brothers, David and Simon Reuben."
However, the takeover was still 18 months from being completed.
