FA Cup:
City breaks

Manchester City  2  Newcastle  0

Newcastle's FA Cup campaign came to an end at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday evening, as a pair of unfortunate deflections decided the quarter-final tie.

Two first half Bernado Silva shots wickedly ricocheted off Dan Burn and Sven Botman, while Alexander Isak failed to convert either of a pair of chances that could have given his side a foothold in the contest.

But in truth Eddie Howe's Magpies were second best in every department and the defending cup holders cruised to victory with over 70% possession and 16 goal attempts compared to just two from United.

Martin Dubravka made some vital saves to keep the score down and although a quadruple substitution injected some life into the flagging away side, there were few causes for optimism for the fantastic followers who backed the black and whites superbly.

Missing from the starting line-up was foot injury victim Tino Livramento and with Kieran Trippier still out, a five man back line had Jamaal Lascelles added to it as Dan Burn and Jacob Murphy patrolled the flanks.

The game started brightly for Newcastle but it was in the 13th minute when their first unlucky break came as Silva's shot hit Burn's leg and looped into the far corner leaving Dubravka helpless.

It happened again just after the half hour, this time Silva's curling effort was nodded down by Botman and Dubravka had already dived to his right and the ball went past desperate attempts to block with his feet.

Those two hammer-blows shook the visitors but in the 36th minute Burn nodded the ball back for the unmarked Isak six yards out and his shot was firm and low but too close to Stefan Ortega who saved well.

Jeremy Doku and Erling Haaland both came close to a third for City after the break but having survived those, substitute Miggy Almiron broke forward and found Isak - only for his uncharacteristically poor first touch to waste the opportunity.

The remaining 20 minutes saw Pep Guardiola's side pass their way to the final whistle as United chased shadows, failing to break a scoreless sequence at City that now extends to ten hours as they were beaten here for the tenth time in a row.

Defeat ended Howe's side last hope of success this season, although European qualification still remains possible with ten Premier League games left to play.

One of those games is back in Manchester at Old Trafford, with Sunday's Manchester United versus Liverpool tie having a bearing on when our fixture will be played. Victory for the Red Devils would cause our visit on or around April 20th to be rescheduled.

Full match report to follow.

Quarter-finals:

Sat 16.03.2024:
Wolves 2-3 Coventry City
Manchester City 2-0 Newcastle United

Sun 17.03.2024:
Chelsea v Leicester City (12.45pm) BBC1
Manchester United v Liverpool (3.30pm) ITV1

Team: Dubravka, Schar, Lascelles, Botman (Krafth 83), Murphy, Guimaraes, Longstaff (L.Miley 62), Burn (Hall 62), Gordon (Almiron 62), Isak, Willock (Anderson 62).
Subs n/u: Karius, Dummett, Targett, Ritchie.

Booked: Schar, Lascelles, Almiron.

Those players not away on international duty will now fly out to Dubai for a warm weather training camp.

MCFC: Ortega, Walker, Akanji, Dias, Gvardiol, Rodri, Kovacic, Foden, Silva, Doku (Bobb 77), Haaland (Alvarez 87).
Subs n/u: Carson, Ake, Stones, Gomes, Nunes, Lewis, Grealish.

Goals: Silva 13,31.

Crowd: TBC - including a magnificent 7,800 away supporters.

Eddie Howe said:

"We tried our very best to force them into mistakes, but they didn’t. They were very good. Conceding the two goals that we did didn’t help our cause.

"It was an uphill battle. We covered a lot of ground, but when we had our moments our last pass was lacking.

"The difference is their technical quality and their players who can get out of tight situations – it’s at the highest level. We’re trying to get to their level.

"We’ve got 10 massive games left and are only a few points below seventh place, so we’re looking to end the season on a high.

"The goals are difficult to take, especially the first one. That's the football gods working against us today in that respect. I thought the lads gave everything but when Man City are in that kind of mood… I thought we did OK.

"I thought we stuck at it and unsettled them at times. When we did get into the final third our quality wasn't there and that's probably the big disappointment.

"We tried to give them a different problem, we tried to be creative with our team selection. We felt two strikers could give us a better platform to attack. Alex's chance was a big moment but overall we weren't good enough. I thought technically they were superb today.

"We have a responsibility in the final 10 games to make sure we're the most competitive team we can be. I still feel we have a huge amount to play for."

ewcastle U18s  2  Stoke City U18s  4

Despite a 4-1 win at Nottingham Forest last weekend, Saturday saw Newcastle U18s again struggle on home territory - Stoke becoming the fifth successive side to leave Little Benton with maximum points.

Luke Enright headed home following a 23rd minute free kick to give the visitors an interval lead, but Logan Watts struck two minutes after the restart with his fourth goal in just three league games.

Parity proved to be fleeting; Enright's close-range finish six minutes later restoring Stoke's lead.

Back came United; Watts turning provider when helping on a corner for Matteos Ferreira to make it 2-2 on the hour.

The scoring rotation continued after 69 minutes when City regained their lead when Jayden Ogbebor shot past Magpies goalkeeper Adam Harrison.

Luke Fearn's 78th minute effort then opened up a two goal lead for the Potters, as they hit four against Newcastle for the second time this season following their 4-1 success in Staffordshire last October.

United's best moment after that saw substitute Josh Donaldson fire against the crossbar in time added on, but it stayed 2-4 in favour of the visitors.

Team: A.Harrison, Watts, Bryant, Milmore, Craggs, Cogdon (H.Powell 46), Bloomer, Palmer (Shahar 46), Wooster (Sanusi 52), O'Donovan, Ferreira (Donaldson 66). Sub n/u: Johnson.

Internationals:
Georgian on our mind

In addition to a host of international friendly matches taking place in the coming days, 12 nations are also participating in playoffs to fill the remaining three places available at this summer's Euro 2024 Finals.

One of those is Georgia, whose goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili has again been linked with a move to Newcastle; The Times the latest to report this.

The 23 year-old has played in Spain for Valencia since 2021 and is under contract until 2027 with a release clause claimed to be €100m. In addition to ourselves, speculation regarding his future has included links to Bayern Munich, Spurs and Chelsea in recent months.

Georgia host Luxembourg in Tbilisi on Thursday (21st), with the winners of that enjoying home advantage against either Greece or Kazakhstan the following Tuesday (26th) in one of three playoff finals.

Call-ups - Gordon in

The England squad for home friendly matches against Brazil and Belgium later this month has been revealed - and while injury keeps Nick Pope, Kieran Trippier and Callum Wilson out, the Magpies are represented with a maiden senior selection for Anthony Gordon

More pertinently for Newcastle fans, Gordon's selection indicates that the knee injury that forced him off the field at Chelsea on Monday isn't as serious as feared - the player himself calling it "slight" and intimating that he's returned to training.

Update:
Rafa ousted

Former Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez has been dismissed from his position as Celta Vigo head coach after barely eight months in charge.

Guiding them to just five wins in 28 games, he leaves with Celta one place and two points clear of the Primera Liga relegation spots.

What proved to be Rafa's final game in charge was a 4-0 defeat at his former club Real Madrid on Sunday, the home side introducing ex-Magpie Joselu from the bench when they held a slim 1-0 advantage.

PS: That Bernabeu reverse was the fifth game that SJP old boy Javier Manquillo has played since leaving Tyneside for a reunion with Rafa.

On This Day in History

Born Or Died:

1922 Bobby Corbett born, Throckley.
(1943-51)

Left back in the 1951 FA Cup winning side, Bobby joined United for £25 from Throckley Juniors and appeared in wartime football.

Never a guaranteed starter, he failed to break into the first XI at all between October 1947 and February 1950, announcing his return soon after with his only senior goal - a penalty in a home win over Derby.

The 1950-51 season saw Bobby overlooked in favour of Alf McMichael, but when the Belfast -born player broke a wrist in training, Bobby took his chance - keeping the number 3 shirt and appearing in every game of the FA Cup campaign after the Fourth Round.

Making just four appearances in the following season, Corbett switched to Middlesbrough in search of regular football and later moved on to Northampton Town for a season before retiring in 1958.

Living in North Walbottle, Bobby passed away on 30th September 1988.

1943 William Sykes Wilson born, Peebles, Scotland.(1960-62)

Midfielder acquired from Scottish junior football club Walkerburn in March 1960 who featured for Newcastle's N's Academy side before stepping up into the reserves.

Billy's sole first team outing came at the age of 18, deputising for Duncan Neale in a 0-2 home League Cup defeat to Sheffield United in October 1961.

Released by the Magpies in May 1962

He later ran a successful telecoms business in the Scottish borders.

1949 Alan Gowling born, Stockport.
(1975-78)

Striker signed by newly-appointed United boss Gordon Lee who made his competitive debut for the Magpies in a 3-0 victory at Ipswich in August 1975.

An Economics graduate from Manchester University, Alan began his career at Old Trafford and made his senior debut in 1969 while still studying - having signed on a part -time basis.

A switch from his original striking role to a midfield berth affected his form and a £65K move to Huddersfield Town was concluded in June 1972.

Three years later though, relegation for the Terriers prompted the sale of Gowling to Newcastle for £70K.

Although netting in a pre-season Anglo Scottish Cup game against Middlesbrough at SJP, His first competitive goal didn't arrive until his seventh start for the Magpies.

Alan then hit form in style, scoring four times in a 6-0 League Cup tie against Southport and grabbing a hat-trick in the next home game - a 5-1 demolition of Wolves.

The most high-profile goal of his Magpies career came in the same competition the following February; his shot against Manchester City levelling the final at 1-1.

Having arrived to partner Malcolm Macdonald, Gowling ended up replacing him as Mac was sold to Arsenal by the hated Lee.

Remaining at SJP during the "player power" episode that saw Richard Dinnis installed as manager, Alan then exited during the ill-fated 1977/78 season.

Ian Greaves - Gowling's former boss at Huddersfield - broke Bolton's transfer record, paying £120K in March 1978.

Playing his final games for the Trotters in defence, Alan moved on to Preston in 1982 but injury curtailed his career.

First becoming involved with the PFA in 1974 (and later completing an MA with a thesis on the workings of the player's union), Gowling became Chairman in 1980.

Pursuing a career away from football, Alan was General Manager of a Buxton-based chemicals company. He also worked as a local radio summariser in Lancashire and was a Manchester Evening News columnist.

1996 Ivan Toney born, Northampton.
(2015-18)

August 2015 saw United sign this 19 year-old striker from Northampton Town, where he'd been a first teamer since 2012.

The Cobblers connection was United's recruitment guru Graham Carr, who had previously played and managed the club and maintained close links with them.

Within weeks of his claimed £300K switch, Ivan debuted against his former side from the bench in a League Cup tie at SJP.

Adding substitute appearances in the next round against Sheffield Wednesday and Chelsea in the Premier League, Toney then spent the remainder of the season out on loan at League One side Barnsley.

Incredibly, he managed two winning appearances at Wembley for the Tykes, a Football League Trophy success over Oxford United followed by a promotion playoff victory against Millwall.

The 2016/17 campaign brought further loan moves for Ivan; spells at League One side Shrewsbury Town and Scunthorpe United.

And it was a similar story the following season, loaned out to Wigan Athletic before returning to Scunthorpe United.

Toney's last games as a Magpie came for the U23s in pre-season before League One Peterborough United paid an undisclosed "six figure fee" in August 2018.

His scoring form attracted scouts from Championship and Premier League clubs to London Road and he moved to Brentford in August 2020 for a fee of around £5m with add-ons potentially doubling that.

A League Cup pairing with Newcastle that December saw him come off the bench shortly after the Bees scored the only goal of the game.

Promotion for the Bees saw Toney face his former employers in the Premier League; inevitably on target in a 3-3 draw at SJP during November 2021 - and again in a 1-5 loss at Gallowgate the following year.

September 2022 saw a senior England call-up for Ivan but he failed to get off the bench for his first cap and was omitted from the Qatar World Cup squad.

And as that tournament began, it was revealed he was the subject of an FA investigation into multiple betting regulation breaches.

That landed him with an eight month ban, returning in mid-January 2024 amid talk of a big-money switch to Arsenal.

An analysis of the previous 15 games for the bottom six of the Premiership made disturbing reading. Even doomed Palace had scored more goals than us. Good job we got off to a good start that season:

2001 Interviewed for The Mag, Newcastle's then Chief Executive, David Stonehouse, was asked about NUFC -related websites. His reply?

"We are having a load of problems with the club’s official website and if I ever want to find out what’s happening I go straight onto NUFC.com"

Newcastle celebrated their 100th game in Europe by devouring the cream of Greek football, 7-1 on aggregate, to reach the UEFA Cup quarter-finals.

And there was certainly nothing ambrosial about the Olympiakos display as they were pounded from the first whistle to the last by an exuberant United, determined to finish the job started in Athens the previous week.

Kieron Dyer revelled in his forward role, supporting two-goal Alan Shearer and was behind much of the first half dominance.

2008 Newcastle completed the signing of free agent defender Lamine Diatta following extended talks with the 32 year-old after passing his medical.

Diatta told French media sources he had agreed to join United initially until the end of the season, with a possible contract extension available at that point.

However he would exit SJP after two substitute outings amounting to just nine minutes.

2009 Mark Doninger netted his sixth goal in four reserve games during a 2-1 win over Everton at Whitley Park.

He levelled the scores before Nile Ranger's late winner for Richard Money's side.
