Update:
No moves
The transfer window closed at 11pm on Thursday, with no major arrivals or
departures at Gallowgate.
Inbound:
Confirmation of a permanent deal for Alfie Harrison emerged, the transfer of the 18 year-old midfielder from Manchester
City was verbally confirmed by Eddie Howe last week. His deal runs
until 2026.
Jay Turner-Cooke has cut short a
season-long loan to Scottish side St.Johnstone and is back on
Tyneside.
The 20 year-old
midfielder has made just one brief substitute appearance since Craig
Levein took over in November. Saints have completed a deal
for Connor Smith, who previously played under Levein at Hearts.
Outbound:
Having truncated his loan in Belgium with Standard Liege, Isaac Hayden
has joined QPR on loan for the rest of the season. Various Championship clubs were keen on the 28 year-old midfielder whose
Magpies deal runs until 2026.
21 year-old reserve midfielder and Academy product Josh Scott
has made a permanent move to Scottish Championship side Queens Park.
Also heading across the border for the remainder of the season is
forward Michael Ndiweni, signing on loan for Scottish First
Division side Annan Athletic.
SJP old boys:
Nottingham Forest have signed Belgian international
goalkeeper Matz Sels - formerly of this parish and with
French side Strasbourg since 2018. He cost £5m, which is around
about what we paid for him in 2016.
The never-ending tour of Islam Slimani continues, with the 35
year-old striker switching clubs for the fifth successive transfer
window. He's now joined Belgian League side KV Mechelen.
Former reserve defender Lewis Cass has completed a loan
switch from League One Port Vale to League Two leaders Stockport County.
Former NUFC coach Steve Agnew left his post at Aberdeen
following the sacking of manager Barry Robson.
U21s:
Clitheroe kids
Following two previous
postponements, a third date and a third different venue has been
confirmed for the U21s' Premier League Cup
tie against Fleetwood Town.
That's now set to take place this Friday night (Feb 2nd) at the
Shawbridge home of Clitheroe FC aka the EcoGiants Stadium.
Postcode for that is BB7 1LZ.
Kick-off is
at 7pm,
admission at the turnstiles (cash or card) £5 adults and £3
concessions.
PS: a new date has been announced for
the postponed PL2 home game against Aston Villa, on Friday March 29th. Venue
is Whitley Park, kick-off at 7pm.
2023/24:
Luton Town
(h)
Saturday sees
Newcastle host the Hatters for the very first time in the Premier
League.
It's an old-fashioned, non-televised 3pm start and sold out,
with the visitors taking and selling their maximum allocation of
3,188 places.
Following losses to Nottingham Forest and Manchester City, the black
and whites are bidding to avoid a trio of successive PL home defeats
for the first time since January/February 2021.
Town have failed to win any of their last 14 games at Gallowgate
since a 2-0 FA Cup success in 1973. In the league only, Luton have
left SJP with maximum points just once in 23 visits - in September
1937.
In an effort to promote sustainability by
reducing private vehicle journeys, anyone with a ticket for
Saturday's game can take advantage of free
public transport across Tyne and wear. Find

The Bosnia and Herzegovina FA posted an update via social

Hat
giveaway - winner

Inspired by our well-loved 1995/96 change kit and named in honour
of the iconic Newcastle striker, Ferdinand bobble hats
are now back in stock at North Eastern retailers Football Bobbles.
Made in the UK, the Ferdinand is one of a range of headgear available online
here* and we scrounged one as a prize in a free giveaway.
We asked which then-current
England international debuted in pre-season at Birmingham City in July
1997 as Les Ferdinand played his final game for Newcastle.
It was Stuart Pearce and from the correct entries
received, one from Paul Leck was randomly picked.

Off to Ewood
A
4-1 home win for Blackburn Rovers over Wrexham in the Fourth
Round of the FA Cup on Monday means that Newcastle will travel to
Ewood Park next month.
7,338 Wrexham fans were in the Darwen End to see their side beaten
by Championship opposition and the Magpies can expect to receive a
similar allocation.
Whether they replicate the selling arrangements is unclear as yet
though: adult ticket prices were £15 and all issued digitally,
although A4 sized printed copies were acceptable.
Rovers are managed by former Magpie Jon Dahl Tomasson, who played in
two FA Cup ties for Newcastle.
His side's
progress means that four of United's last 10 Fifth Round ties will
have been against
them.
Newcastle's last visit to Ewood Park was for a Third Round FA replay
in January 2019. That ended in a 4-2 win, with Sean Longstaff among
the goalscorers.
Eddie Howe's side will head to Blackburn looking for a fifth
successive FA Cup victory on their ground.
Ties are played on or around Wednesday February 28th - between our
Saturday night PL visit to Arsenal and Saturday afternoon PL home
game with Wolves.
That there's no provision for replays in the Fifth Round and a
result must be achieved on the night, during 30 minutes of extra
time and failing that, penalties.
Newcastle have now been drawn away from home on four successive
occasions, their longest sequence in the FA Cup since they came out
of the hat second on four occasions between 2015 and 2017.
And the most recent occasion that we were handed away draws in the
third, fourth and fifth rounds before this season was back in 1975/76.

Pope boost
The Times report
that goalkeeper Nick Pope is expected to return to the
Newcastle squad during mid-March - raising his own hopes of making
the England squad for this summer's Euro finals.
The 31 year-old dislocated his shoulder in the home win over
Manchester United in early December. Estimates of a four month
recuperation period were made then - and at this stage, appear to be
accurate.
2023/24:
Miley signed up
From NUFC, Monday:
Newcastle United are delighted to announce that Lewis Miley
has signed a new long-term contract.
The 17-year-old midfielder has
committed his future to the Magpies having become an important part
of Eddie Howe's first team squad this season.
A product of the Newcastle
United Academy, Lewis became United's youngest ever Premier League
debutant when he featured for his boyhood club on the final day of
the 2022/23 season away at Chelsea.
He has since made 18 competitive
first team appearances, including three outings in the UEFA
Champions League, and has been capped at Under-19 level for England.
In November 2023, Lewis became
the youngest ever Newcastle United player to register an assist in
the Premier League when he set up an Alexander Isak goal in a 4-1
victory over Chelsea.
He also became the youngest
player to record an assist for an English side in UEFA Champions
League history in December 2023, laying on a pass for Joelinton to
score against AC Milan.
And just three days later, he
became Newcastle United's youngest ever scorer in the Premier
League, bagging the opener at the Gallowgate End as the Magpies ran
out 3-0 winners against Fulham.
Upon committing his future to
the club, Lewis said: "It's a really proud moment for me and my
family to sign another professional contract with my boyhood club. I
couldn't be prouder.
"Hopefully I can continue
to do well over the next few years, and I can keep improving my
performance and getting better as a player.
"It's a real joy playing in
front of the fans, especially to hear them chanting my name. Their
support means so much to me and my family, and I'm looking forward
to the future."
Newcastle United head coach,
Eddie Howe, commented: "Lewis is an exceptional young talent
and has all the attributes to be a huge part of Newcastle United's
journey, both now and for many years to come.
"He has already contributed
to the team with excellent performances in very challenging
circumstances this season, and we are very excited about what is to
come as he continues to develop his game and grow with us.
"I'd like to acknowledge
the role of the club's Academy in Lewis' development. He is a
shining example of the club's talent pathway and he can hopefully
inspire our younger players to follow in his footsteps."
PS: Wor Flags are currently running a prize
draw for a framed 2022/23 replica home shirt signed by Lewis,
marking his PL debut against Chelsea last May. The full-size Anthony
Gordon banner waved by Wor Flags as games is also up for grabs in
the same draw.
Tickets cost £5 and proceeds are split between Wor Flags and the
Great North Children's Hospital. The draw closes this coming
Saturday (February 3rd).

Friday saw the latest Premier League fixture alterations for live TV
announced, with only one round of games mucked around with - the
first weekend in March.
Newcastle's home meeting with Wolves wasn't selected for live
coverage meaning that it stays at 3pm on Saturday March
2nd.
Update:
Incoming
confirmation
As confirmed by Eddie Howe on
Friday, Newcastle have completed the
permanent transfer
of Manchester City academy midfielder Alfie Harrison on a long-term deal.
The Manchester-born 18 year-old is left footed and initially joins
United's U18 squad. He's yet to make a senior
competitive bow and debuted for City U21s just last month.
PS: It also appears that a second teenager has put pen to paper in
recent days, namely Brayden Clarke - a Welsh U17
youth international defender most recently with the Wolves
Academy.

On This Day in History |
1st February |
Born Or Died:
1927 Hugh Cameron
born, Blantyre, Scotland. (1951-52)
Winger who began his
career with Burnbank United in his native
Lanarkshire before moving on to play
league football for Clyde.
Making the switch to Torquay United in
1948, Hugh was signed by Newcastle United
at a cost of £4,500 in April 1951.
Appearing soon after in a home friendly
against Stade Rennais, Hugh's
competitive senior debut followed in a 1-1 draw
with Liverpool at SJP that November.
However, he was to feature only once more for United's
first team before being shipped out to
Bury in February 1952 - his old boss at
Torquay, Jock McNeill, by then in charge
at Gigg Lane.
After a spell with Workington (at that
time in the Football League) Cameron returned to Scotland with St.Mirren
in 1956.
Later becoming a bookmaker in Hamilton,
Hugh's death was reported in 2009.

1966 Robert Lee
born, Plaistow.
(1992-2002)

A fantastic servant for
the club and one of Newcastle's best signings
of the Premier League era.
Lee's time on Tyneside was slightly soured
with the Gullit saga, contract shenanigans
and an ill-conceived
"testimonial" match against
Athletic Bilbao in August 2001.
None of that hides the fact though that he
was the mainstay of our side for a decade
and astonishing value for the £700K we
paid Charlton Athletic.
And his place in history is assured - as
the last Newcastle player to score at the
"old" Wembley Stadium - a fine
header in front of the Toon fans at the
Tunnel End against Chelsea in the 1999/00
FA Cup Semi Final.
Also worthy of mention among his 56 goals
for the club are a hat-trick of headers
away to Antwerp in the UEFA Cup and the
one that got away; a shot from inside his
own half at SJP against Brentford in March
1993 that was ruled out for a free kick -
to United.
We clawed back £250K in February 2002
when Lee moved to Derby County (less than
a week after Warren Barton had made the
same journey to Pride Park).
August 2003 saw him move again,
this time returning to his East London roots
with West Ham, remaining there for a year.
After the briefest of stays at Oldham
Athletic (62 minutes against Hartlepool at
Boundary Park in an LDV Trophy tie) he
seemed finished with football.
However, after a five month hiatus Rob
was persuaded by then-boss John Gorman to
make a comeback with Wycombe Wanderers.
At Adams Park he seemed to be
reinvigorated and continued to play past
his 40th birthday.
Lee's career finally ended with 90 minutes
for the Chairboys at Cheltenham Town in May
2006. A 0-0 draw meant that the home side
won this playoff tie 2-1 - ruining Lee's
chances of bowing out in the Millennium
Stadium.
However, seven days previously he'd enjoyed
a happier occasion, playing once again in
black and white at SJP as part of Alan
Shearer's testimonial match against
Celtic.
He's since appeared as a (pro-United) media pundit.
1967 Brian Kilford born,
Jarrow.
(1981-86)
 Tough-tackling
defender who appeared as a schoolboy before signing apprentice forms with the
Magpies during 1983.
Brian played his part in United's FA Youth Cup success of 1985, earning man of
the match awards for his displays in the two-legged final against a Watford
side who included future Magpie forward Malcolm Allen.
Agreeing professional terms in February 1985, Kilford appeared for the reserves
until his released at the end of the 1985/86 season following succession of
injuries including a broken foot and knee ligament damage.
Following trials at Wolves and Halifax Town he signed for Whitley Bay, later
playing for both Hebburn FC and Jarrow FC.
Away from football Brian worked for Rolls Royce, Siemens and Balfour Beatty in
the power, transmission & distribution industry.
1987
Giuseppe Rossi born,
Clifton, New Jersey, USA. (2006)
USA-born of Italian
parents, striker Giuseppe began his career with Serie A
side Parma - although he never playing a
senior game.
Signing for Manchester United in 2004,
Rossi had featured both for their first
team and reserves - scoring a hat trick
for the latter side against Newcastle.
Moving to SJP on August 2006 transfer
deadline day in a loan deal, he netted
just once, against Pompey in the Carling
Cup.
Even allowing for the fact that he wasn't
able to represent us in the UEFA Cup, an
apparent reluctance by manager Glenn
Roeder to play Rossi was openly questioned
by many, including Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson.
Loaned out to Parma, a £6.7m transfer to
Spanish side Villarreal followed in August 2007.
Featuring in the Italian side at the 2008
Olympics, Giuseppe's senior
international debut came against Bulgaria
that October.
Several operations to rectify an ongoing
knee problem would then decimate his
career following a move to Fiorentina
in 2013.
Loaned to Spanish
duo Levante and Celta Vigo to regain match
fitness, Rossi joined Genoa in 2017
following his release by Fiorentina.
A
free agent again in 2018, he was invited
to train at former clubs Manchester
United and Villarreal while trying to find
a new club.
Trials at New York Red Bulls in 2019 and
fellow MLS side Real Salt Lake in 2020
followed - the latter leading to
a short-term deal after which he linked
up with SPAL in Italy in late 2021. That
ended in July 2022 and his career ended a year later when he announced his retirement.
1990 Dan Gosling
born, Brixham.
(2010-14)

Devonian Dan began his career at
Plymouth Argyle and debuted for the
Pilgrims in December 2006, receiving an
England U17 call-up later that season.
Making a £1.5m switch to Everton in January
2008, Gosling's first Premier League
appearance came the following December.
He then made the headlines for scoring
the winner in an FA Cup Fourth
Round Replay against Liverpool - a goal live TV viewers missed, as ITV
prematurely cut to an advert break seconds
before.
Capped at England U21 level, a Cruciate
ligament injury sustained against Wolves at Molineux
in March 2010 would be his final
appearance for the Toffees.
Declaring himself a free agent - although Everton
were adamant
he'd verbally committed to sign a
new deal - Newcastle completed a free
transfer that July, once the FA had
confirmed his status.
Returning to fitness, his senior Magpies debut
came in
January 2011, a late substitute outing in
the wear-Tyne derby.
However, that brief
appearance and a couple
of reserve games caused him further
knee problems and it took
until August 2011 to get him back playing.
What proved to be his only Toon goal
came in a 1-3 defeat at Manchester City
three months later; marking his
first PL start with a red card at Norwich
City
and drifting out of the side.
Recalled for
Europa League ties in the 2012/13 season,
he then suffered with ankle problems.
Crystal
Palace then agreed a deal in
August 2013 - only to farcically collapse when
Dan travelled to
meet Eagles representatives and nobody
turned up!
After
a brief return to first team action at SJP,
Dan was loaned to Championship side
Blackpool - returning in January 2014 after Yohan Cabaye's exit.
Suggestions were made that Alan Pardew
played Dan in order to draw attention
both to a lack of squad options and also
to further alienate Hatem Ben
Arfa.
Finally making a second PL start - and first at SJP - against Manchester United
in April 2014 - what proved to be Dan's
final appearance came during
May's home win over Cardiff City.
Championship side Bournemouth signed him
as free agent, ending a failed punt by
United who waited 17 months for his first
PL start - and another 28
months for the second.
Gosling
made the headlines in his final weeks at
SJP when fined £30K by the FA for
multiple breaches of rules relating to
betting on football matches by players.
His defence was that he'd been bored while
injured....
Helping the Cherries to promotion, Dan
then finally established himself as a
top-flight player in the 2015/16 season
and clocked up over a century of
appearances for them - including a goal
against Newcastle in 2018.
Following relegation, Gosling joined
fellow Championship side Watford in
January 2021 and played a part in their
promotion back to the Premier League.
A peripheral figure during their 2021/22
top flight campaign, he played more
regularly during the following season
after they had returned to the second
tier. Gosling joined League Two Notts County in November 2023 on a short-term contract which ended in January 2024.

1994 Alex Nicholson
born, Newcastle.
(2010-13)
Right back who debuted for
United's U18s against Crewe Alexandra in March 2010.
Capped by Wales at U17 level, Alex
made his reserve bow for the Magpies in a
pre-season kickabout against Gateshead in
July 2010.
And a first competitive reserve appearance
came as a substitute against Manchester
United at Altrincham six months later.
Appearing as United's regular right back
in the U18s side for both the 2010/11 and
2011/12 campaigns, Alex scored his first
reserve goal in January 2012 during a
Senior Cup tie against Bedlington
Terriers.
Selected for the Welsh U19 side early the
following season, a leg injury sidelined
him and he was released by United in
2013.
Joining Preston North End on trial, a one
year deal followed but Nicholson was to
play just once in the first team before
moving on to local non-league side
Chorley.
Returning to his native North
East with Blyth Spartans, Alex joined
South Shields before returning to Croft
Park.
2019 saw him sign for Gateshead, playing
regularly at both full back and in
central defence.
A third stint at Blyth Spartans then
concluded in early 2023, when Alex
retired due to injury.
1997 Brendan Pearson born, Newcastle.
(2013-18)
 Goalkeeper
who grew up in Haydon Bridge and was
attached to United from the age of ten,
accepting a two year scholarship at the
club during February 2013.
Deputising for the injured Freddie
Woodman, Pearson's U18 debut came in a 2-1
FA Youth Cup victory at Barnsley that
December.
May 2015 saw Pearson make a bow at U21
level as the Magpies were beaten 2-3 by
West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns.
Loaned to National League side Gateshead
for a month the following August without
featuring, a further month-long posting to
the International Stadium in January
2016.
And Brendan was one of a crop of young
players given their first professional
deals during the summer of 2016.
Plagued with injured problems that required
surgery on both knees, he made a belated playing return
for United's reserve side in early 2018
but was then released.
Joining South Shields but playing just one competitive game, he trained with
Mansfield Town, Carlisle United and Rangers in an attempt to
find a new club.
A successful trial
at Scottish side Morton in early 2019 did lead
to him signing an 18 month deal at Cappielow.
However, he failed to make a competitive
senior debut after sustaining an ankle injury and left the
club that August, later signing for Blyth Spartans.
That also proved to be short-lived and Brendan turned his
attentions to working as a personal trainer.
2004 Death of Bob
Stokoe, 73.
(1947-61)
One
of our 1950s FA Cup stalwarts. In total,
Bob made 288 appearances for the club
between 1947 and 1961, including the 1955
FA Cup final success over Manchester City.
He also managed some other club to
success in the same competition in the
1970s.
