Tuesday
evening saw Newcastle U21s make home advantage pay at St. James' Park, lifting
the Northumberland Senior Cup for the first time since 2018.
A goal either side of half time ultimately proved sufficient for United;
Northern League Second Division Champions Blyth netting in their
first-ever final but unable to find an equaliser that would have forced
penalties.
Town's Alex Lawrence was the busier of the two goalkeepers in the first
half, dealing with efforts by Ben Parkinson and Amadou Diallo. However he could do nothing to prevent Parkinson taking Alfie Harrison's
pass and firing home from 12 yards at the Gallowgate End in the 43rd
minute.
Blyth's Brandon Slater then tested Aidan Harris shortly after the
restart, before a muddled second home goal eventually arrived from the
penalty spot.
Diallo scampered down the United left before setting Dylan Stephenson
away. He initially looked to have run the ball out, but was able to
return it across the area, amid strong appeals led by visiting custodian
Lawrence.
Play continued and when the ball reached the six yard box at the
second attempt via a miskick, Ben Fell and Jay Turner-Cooke collided in
front of goal. Referee Zak Kettle harshly penalised the Town defender and after further
protests, Diallo emphatically dispatched the spot kick on 57 minutes.
Blyth pulled one back with 17 minutes of normal time remaining, after
substitute Max Cowburn's fierce free kick cannoned off the Newcastle
wall for a corner. Cowburn's inswinging corner from the left was then met by Dan Wilson's
glancing header to give the non-league side a glimmer of hope.
That should have been almost immediately snuffed out, Parkinson looping
in a cross from the right for Stephenson to blaze over in front of goal.
2-1 it stayed though and Town were unable to seriously threaten the
United goal through the remainder of the half and seven additional
minutes, captain Cathal Heffernan collecting the trophy and a clutch of
his players picking up winners medals before their release by the
Magpies.
