Goals

19 mins Martin Dubravka began the move by finding Emil Krafth on the right hand corner of his own box. He played a pass out to Jacob Murphy on the right flank and when that came back infield, Tino Livramento changed direction to elude an opponent and headed for the halfway line.

Into the Burnley half, a layoff to Alexander Isak saw the attack change direction as headed out to the right before finding Sean Longstaff, who in turn fed the overlapping Murphy. His first time low centre towards the front post picked out the arriving Isak, who shot against the goalkeeper.

Lurking in typical style to slip home the loose ball was Callum Wilson.
1-0

35 mins Hall stepped up to intercept a pass destined for Lorenz Assignon towards the left back area and motored forward before looping a diagonal ball to Wilson just outside the Burnley box. Controlling it on his chest, the striker tried to take the ball round Maxime Esteve towards goal, but was pushed out towards the byline.

Heading back, attempting to turn, the ball nicked off the defender towards the arriving Murphy, who collected the ball and reached the byline himself before pulling it back for Sean Longstaff, who got ahead of Josh Brownhill to confidently steer a right footer into the far side of the goal.
2-0

40 mins Burnley's attempt to play the ball out from their own left spot foundered when Dan Burn stepped up to block Lyle Foster and then dispossess Assignon before poking it into the path of Gordon on the corner of the box.

With Isak ahead of him pleading for a pass, Gordon instead had the presence of mind to play in the unattended Bruno Guimaraes to his right, who passed the ball into the net from 16 yards out.
3-0

Half time: Clarets 0 Magpies 3

(
52 mins Alexander Isak missed a penalty - saved)

55 mins Isak whipped the ball off the toes of Josh Cullen inside the Newcastle half and found Wilson accelerating away towards goal with substitute Hjalmar Ekdal running alongside him. Vitinho joined the pursuit, but Murphy arrived to stride forward towards the right hand side of the box.

His net sidefoot across the six yard box looked to have picked out Wilson, but evaded him to arrive at the feet of Alexander Isak. He had time to take a touch before whipping it into the net.
4-0

86 mins
Gudmundsson's outswinging left-footed corner from the left dropped on the far corner of the six yard box, Dara O'Shea looping a header back across goal, over both Dubravka and Burn. 4-1

Full time: Clarets 1 Magpies 4

We Said

Eddie Howe said:

"A really good performance: we knew Burnley would be on it, it was a big game for them.

"It’s an intimidating place to come but when we got control of the game and started to settle, I thought we showed our quality and scored four great goals.

"Tactically we tweaked things around and I was really pleased to see we still gelled together.  A lot of pace, a lot of quality, but you need it to gel for the performance to be as strong as you want it to be.

"Scoring goals is the most difficult thing to do in football, so if we can be regular goalscorers then we've got a chance of winning games. We know we have to improve defensively, but I thought we were pretty solid today.

"We're determined to change our away form and be more consistent, the away one against Crystal Palace was poor. Today was a much better performance, a much better feel around the group.

"We know we’ve got goals, we have to defend better, but it was big step forward today.”

On Alexander Isak:

"I say it very week - an outstanding talent, technically gifted, pace, took his goal well today.

He’ll be disappointed with his penalty but that’s just one of those things - another really good display, I thought him and Callum Wilson looked really well again today, especially in the transitions.

"The penalty miss can happen. He's been really good from the spot this year, but I'm happy he got his goal just after, that'll give him a big lift."

On Callum Wilson:

"
Write Callum (Wilson) off at your peril, for sure. He comes back time and time again and is a very motivated player he wants to do his best in every moment. I have managed him for a long time and mentality wise I would not swap him.

"When he has a focus and a goal he will go for it. Of course, I want him at the club next season or course. I will do everything I can to make that happen. Gareth (Southgate) will make his own assessment on what he has seen but he has done himself no harm."

On Joelinton and Miggy Almiron's return:

"It's massive for us and that's something that has really hurt us during the season. To have that quality ready, chomping at the bit to play.

"I've got to look after those two players as well, I've got to make the right decisions and introduce them at the right times to get their load right.

"The quality they have is undoubted and the impact on the team is undoubted. I think the feeling in pre-game was in part because they were there and the group got a lot stronger.

"It always depends on the games but my plan was to maybe give them 15, 20 minutes today for the two outfield players. It was the right step up for them and we'll see how they train this week."

On European qualification hopes:

"We’re determined to finish as high as possible. With 10 games to go we tried to reset our targets and since the international break you’ve seen a general improvement in our performances.

"We’ve got to keep that going for the last three games of the season. But I think you could sense there was a real desire today.

"I sensed that in training during the week and that’s because we have a really good group full of leaders and winners. They’d love to get back to Europe, I’m sure.

"We're in there fighting for those places, it gives us a much better position than before the game. Now we go into a tough three-game week, starting with Brighton."

They Said

Vincent Kompany:

"Look, we came up against a better side today but there was no lack of effort from our side. We fought hard and the team gave everything, we just couldn't match Newcastle in most areas of the pitch.

"We made a very good start to the game and it's moments like that (from the start) that you have to seize and take advantage of. But credit to my team, they never gave up.

"Good players find solutions and at the start of the game we played well and they (Newcastle) didn't seem to have the solutions, but they figured out the moments and ways to expose us and then they have three goals at the break.

"I just want to highlight, we never let the game die, ok the score was done but we kept going until the end and kept fighting but fell short to the better team.

"It is what it is, we just have to pick ourselves up and go again next week at Spurs. A result there, and other results going our way, and the picture changes once again.

"In the end I'm not beaten by it or defeated by it. They're a good side with a phenomenal attacking set of players. Quality midfielders who are aggressive on the ball and just overall stronger than us today.

"Like I have said, there was no lack of effort from the team but we need to be ready now on Monday to go again for the last two games and give it our all."

"The fact of the matter is we play the last game against (Nottingham) Forest. We can't control what they do, we can't control what Luton (Town) does. We have one game to play in between and that one game we need something special."

Stats

Four more goals takes United's total on the road so far this season to 30, the fourth-highest total that they have amassed in the Premier League:

2001/02
34 goals (19 matches)
2022/23 32 goals (19 matches)
1993/94 31 goals (21 matches)
2023/24 30 goals (17 matches)
1995/96 28 goals (19 matches)

With 48 games played in all competitions so far, United have scored 95 goals (excluding penalty shootouts) this season. They've only exceeded that total in two previous PL seasons:

1996/97 93 goals (51 games)
1994/95 95 goals (56 games)
2023/24 95 goals (48 games)
1993/94 97 goals (48 games)
2001/02 106 goals (53 games)

Martin Dubravka played his 150th Premier League game for Newcastle while Dan Burn completed a century of appearances in all competitions as a Magpie.

Following home and away victories against Aston Villa, Fulham and Sheffield United, Newcastle secured their fourth Premier League double of the season.

Alexander Isak netted his 20th PL goal of the season and 24th in all competitions.
He follows Andy Cole (once), Les Ferdinand (once) and Alan Shearer (four times) in reaching the magic 20 while his total of 24 league and cup goals is the highest since Alan Shearer hit 28 in 2003/04.

He lost his 100% spot kick record as a Newcastle player, having netted all seven PL penalties (all eight including the FA Cup) before today. The last Magpie to miss a PL penalty was Joe Willock at home to Manchester City in May 2021 (although he did net the rebound).

Between that one and today, we had racked up 18 consecutive PL spot kick successes. Our previous best tally in that competition was 10 in a row between 2004 and 2006.

Callum Wilson reached double figures for the season with his ninth PL strike of 2023/24.
He now has 47 PL goals for United, taking him one clear of Peter Beardsley and 101 behind Alan Shearer.

Bruno Guimaraes scored his sixth goal this season, all of which have come in the PL - his highest tally as a Magpie.
The Brazilian now has 15 to his name in the PL, moving one ahead of current colleagues Joe Willock and Fabian Schar to go level with Andy Carroll.

Sean Longstaff's fifth PL strike of 2023/24 extends his season
al
record in all competitions to seven this season. His nine PL career goals match Tino Asprilla, Peter Lovenkrands, Jermaine Jenas and Charles N'Zogbia.

Newcastle scored four goals in one game at Burnley for the first time in their history. They last won by three clear goals at Turf Moor in September 1948.

United scored four or more goals away from home for the nineteenth time and registered their ninth 4-1 success on the road. This was the sixth time that they've led a PL game by three clear goals in the PL at the interval, four of which have come under Eddie Howe:

Aug 2007 Bolton Wanderers (a) 3-0 up in 27 minutes, won 3-1.
Mar 2012 West Bromwich Albion (a) 3-0 up in 34 minutes, won 3-1.
Oct 2022 Fulham (a) 3-0 up in 43 minutes, won 4-1.
Dec 2022 Leicester City (a) 3-0 up in 32 minutes, won 3-0.
Sep 2023 Sheffield United (a) 3-0 up in 35 minutes, won 8-0.
May 2024 Burnley (a) 3-0 up in 40 minutes, won 4-1.

Magpies @ Turf Moor - last 10:

2023/24 Won 4-1 Wilson, Longstaff, Guimaraes, Isak (PL)
2021/22 Won 2-1 Wilson 2(1pen) (PL)

2019/20 Lost 0-1 (PL)
2018/19 Won 2-1 og(Mee), Clark (PL)
2017/18 Lost 0-1 (PL)
2014/15 Drew 1-1 Cisse (PL)
2000/01 Won 1-0 Cort (FR)

1979/80 Lost 2-3 Shoulder, Barton (D2)

Waffle

The flag flying at half mast at Turf Moor before kick-off was in memory of deceased former Claret Leighton James, but by full time was a suitable epitaph for Burnley's likely Premier League demise.

"Europe again, Ole Ole" was the chant from the away end as Newcastle increased their chances of a return to continental action, but if they didn't mathematically relegate the hosts as they had here in 2022, an instant Championship return now looks inevitable for the Clarets.

Goals from Callum Wilson, Sean Longstaff, Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak could have been added to as several other chances went begging; most notably Isak's saved penalty kick. Vincent Kompany's side mustered only a late header from a corner that few of their fans actually saw.

Eddie Howe took charge of United for 100th time in the Premier League against his former side, and once Wilson opened the scoring, victory number 49 was assured.

Unbeaten in their last three games, Burnley opened brightly and found space in front of a visiting defence where Emil Krafth partnered Dan Burn in the absence of the hamstrung Fabian Schar.

The Clarets were unhappy when contact between Bruno and Lorenz Assignon in the box caused the latter to tumble but referee Anthony Taylor instantly waved away penalty claims and no VAR stoppage followed.

The Magpies had initially struggled to retain possession, but that all changed on 19 minutes when Tino Livramento burst forward and Jacob Murphy set up Isak, whose shot was blocked by the 'keeper only for Wilson to pounce on  the rebound and convert from close in.

That lead was hen doubled the lead after 35 minutes after Lewis Hall and Wilson combined for Murphy to beat his man and roll it to Longstaff, who finished well and looked absolutely ecstatic.

Fellow midfielder Bruno was next up as United's dominance continued; Dan Burn winning possession in the Burnley half and Anthony Gordon pulling the ball back for the Brazilian to stroke home from 15 yards five minutes before the break.

Isak's run of penalty conversion for the Magpies then ended when Arijanet Muric guessed right after Gordon was brought down in the box by Josh Brownhill on 51 minutes. The spot kick award prompted a brief discussion between Wilson and Isak, the former making an unsuccessful attempt to take it before being rebuffed - not quite at the farcical level of Chelsea players recently, but avoidable.

A VAR check in the aftermath of the saved penalty then confirmed that a suspected encroachment didn't occur but within two minutes the Swedish striker had made amends:  smashing the ball home in front of the away end after Murphy's squared pass evaded Wilson on the edge of the six yard box.

More goals could have followed; Messrs Murphy, Gordon, Anderson, Bruno and Ritchie all having sight of goal, but Burnley managed to keep the score down to four and never quite imploded in the manner of their Sheffield United counterparts in similar circumstances last September. They even managed a late reply, O'Shea heading home following an 86th minute corner.

By then, fit-again duo Miggy Almiron and Joelinton had both appeared from the bench; the Brazilian roared on to the field after ending a four month absence during which he signed a new contract. Former Claret Nick Pope meanwhile was among the unused substitutes after a five month absence.

Two points clear in sixth three games to go, it's all coming to the boil nicely and selection issues of a different kind to those which have dogged him for much of the season now face Howe.

On a day when the efforts of those at the other end were celebrated, the displays of several defenders were equally worthy of mention: the increasingly impressive Lewis Hall completing his first full game for the club, along with a quietly efficient display from Emil Krafth.
