Tommy Craig said:

"Sunderland, as you would expect, made it difficult for us in the early part of the game but I felt our football was the overriding factor, which really pleased me.

"It was nice to see Andy Ferrell, who is leaving, put in a sound display and score two goals.

"Andy and Bradley Orr are leaving at the end of the season but their performances typified our competitive spirit. They took it upon themselves to go out on a high."

Departing goalscorer Andy Ferrell commented:

"It was my last game for the club. I asked Kenny Wharton and Tommy Craig to play this game, out of all the games this was the one I wanted to play. You'd have to pick Sunderland at St James' Park and I loved it.

"All my mates were there and I was trying for a hat-trick, maybe I was trying too hard. Clubs were here watching us and I felt we did ourselves justice.

"I felt very, very emotional. I felt like crying, especially as it was at St James'.

"A few clubs have shown an interest and hopefully I'll sort something out, otherwise I'll be working at Kwiksave!"

5,585 fans were present at St.James' Park on Thursday evening for the final home game of the season and all but 136 metro-fare dodgers from the dark place went home well happy as United completed a reserve double over the mackems.

Released midfielder
Andy Ferrell followed up his belting goal against St.Johnstone on Tuesday with an equally fine effort at the Leazes end to give us a deserved lead on 16 minutes.

And at that stage the more experienced Magpies looked like running up a cricket score against a sunlun' side composed of academy youngsters.

However, the visitors hit back against the run of play to level on 22 minutes when some plank up front headed home a cross from the right that we neglected to track.

Other chances came and went before the interval for Newcastle to restore their lead, but a mixture of average finishing and good defending by the red and whites ensured parity at the interval.

In the second half we struggled to get into the attacking groove again, until that man Ferrell found himself in the box on 70 minutes and netted with a first-time volley that hit home via a vital deflection.

That seemed to shatter the visitors, who spent most of the final 20 minutes chasing around in their own half as we attacked in waves.

Only one more goal came though to emphasize our superiority, when Guy nodded home at the back post with 8 minutes remaining from an Offiong cross.

For the provider it partly atoned for a poor miss seconds earlier, when he received the ball unmarked in the area but sent his shot wide of the goal.

An enjoyable night then for a youthful toon crowd who sang, clapped and cheered the lads on while still finding time to berate their Wearside counterparts in the old "firebomb" corner away end.
