Match Reports 2000-01 - FC Siol (a) Friendly

Subs n/u: Grindlay, Charvet.

Referee: R.Hewitt

4 mins. Opening the scoring was Gary Caldwell, who blasted the ball home from close range, after seeing a shot from brother Steve blocked. 1-0
20 mins.
A beautifully curled free kick from Diego Gavilan from just outside the penalty area, which he bent round the wall and into the top right hand corner of the net. 2-0.
25 mins. Most of the fans in the meagre crowd were rooting for the amateurs, and had something to cheer when they grabbed a goal back. Centre forward Nicolic sprung the offside trap just inside the Newcastle half and raced towards goal. The two Caldwells set off in vain pursuit, but the Dutchman maintained his run before planting the ball past Brain. His celebrations took him to the corner flag, where he was joined by the rest of his colleagues. To say there were delighted was an understatement. Shades of Tino ! 1-2
43 mins.
Normal service restored after numerous wasted opportunities; Stuart Green worked a neat 1-2 with Mark Boyd and then chipped home over the goalkeeper. 3-1
45 mins.
A second goal for Gavilan, this time a close-range finish following good work from McGuffie, betraying his favoured midfield position with a strong run and cross from a wide position. 4-1

Half Time FC Siol 1 NUFC 4

58 mins. After having been denied three times by Paul Newton in one on one situations, David McMahon finally converted at the fourth time of asking, but credit must be given to Ameobi for teeing up the chance via his close control and pass from the right side of the area. 5-1
72 mins.
With Siol making little impression as an attacking force (and hitting the bar with their best chance from a free kick), United went further ahead with a rare (possibly unique) goal from David Beharall. An audcaious backheel from Ameobi wrong-footed the Dutch defence and allowed Gavilan to find Beharall unmarked. His chip from the edge of the box had the mark of an ace goalscorer ! 6-1
80 mins.
A deserved hat trick for Diego Gavilan, who profited from good work by Allegranza (much improved from the previous day) and placed his shot just wide of the 'keeper, before indicating to the Newcastle bench that his work was done. He was replaced by Coppinger, who had played the first half before going off. It was that sort of game....7-1.
82 mins. United ended up with an eighth, courtesy of more persistence from trialist Allegranza, who was eventually fouled as he made for the Siol area. From the resultant free kick, David McMahon picked his spot and rattled home his second goal from 12 yards. 8-1.

Final score: FC Siol 1 NUFC 8

Waffle:

Siol had been thrashed 12-0 by Darlo on Day One of the tournament, during which time the only goalkeeper brought by the Dutch side had been unable to continue. For their match against Newcastle, Scarborough again generously lent them a 'keeper - Paul Newton, and two outfield players to strengthen their lineup.

Newton played the game of his life, and were it not for his efforts, Newcastle would easily have bettered the Darlo Dozen.

Scarborough's original half-baked decision to schedule Newcastle against Darlington on the Sunday afternoon, later rescinded, did their attendance figures no good whatsoever. The combination of the incorrect tannoy announcement and subsequent media reports meant that this was the lowest turnout of Newcastle followers at a match of this nature for many years, and on a beautiful Summer's day. Forget the Toon army - this was more like the dirty dozen !

Scarborough also made a big mistake inviting the Dutch amateurs Siol, who were completely out of their depth at this level. Consequently, little meaningful analysis could be made of the pair of trialists fielded by Newcastle. They both had better games against Siol than they had on the Saturday, but this may have had more to do with the quality of the opposition.

Of the established United names on show, Gavilan had a field day - it's just a pity that the same couldn't be said of Stephen Glass on the other wing...

Many thanks to Alan, our Special Correspondent.
