Brentford (a)
Newcastle conclude their Premier
League season in West London this afternoon, facing the Bees in a 4pm
kick-off at the Gtech Community Stadium.
For anyone with the tickets for the game, be aware that search
procedures outside the away end tend to be thorough and lengthy.
That causes delays to entry and may also be badly received by
some.
There's no live TV coverage in the UK.
The Magpies begin in seventh, needing to equal or better Manchester
United's result at Brighton to stay ahead of the Red Devils and
qualify for a two-legged Europa Conference playoff on August
22nd/29th.
However that would depend on Erik ten Hag's side
losing to Manchester City in the FA Cup Final next Saturday. Were
they to win, they would earn a Europa League spot, pushing the sixth
place finisher into the Europa Conference and depriving the team
finishing in seventh of European football.
Were Chelsea to lose at home to Bournemouth and Newcastle win at
Brentford, that would be enough to bridge the current three point
gap and see Eddie Howe's side take sixth place on goal
difference.
Sixth ensures either a Europa League or a Europa Conference berth,
depending on the FA Cup result.
Brighton confirm that they are to part company with Coach Roberto de
Zerbi after Sunday's game.

Newcastle have scored 32 away goals in

has only been beaten once: 34 in 2001/02.
In all competitions so far this
season, Newcastle have scored 98 goals (81 in the PL, six in the CL,
six in the FAC and five in the Carabao Cup). They last reached a

top flight season since 1960/61.
That PL total of 81 has only been exceeded once by United, with 82
scored in their debut season of 1993/94, which consisted of 42 games
not 38.

Sticky end
Everton U18s 8 Newcastle
U18s 0
There was a memorable conclusion to United's U18 programme
on Saturday - for the Toffees at least...
Graeme Carrick's side came into the game
following successes against Leeds United and Boro but fell behind
after just seven minutes to Joel Catesby.
Harvey Foster then doubled Everton's advantage on 37 minutes, before Jacob
Beaumont-Clark struck five minutes before the interval to make it
0-3.
Things got no better after the break for the Magpies at Finch Farm,
Joshua van Schoor on target in the 50th and 66th minutes with
Catesby's second of the game coming in between on 62 minutes.
The hosts then piled on the misery in the closing moments, George
Finney with a seventh on 85 and Matthew Apter making it eight three
minutes later.
Team: Harrison, Durrant, Bloomer, Watts, H.Powell, Taylor (Hernes
46), Brayson (Wooster 83), Palmer, Donaldson (Johnson 80), Emerson
(O'Donovan 84), Neave. Sub n/u: Jones.
Booked: Bloomer, Palmer, Neave.
Despite this loss, the Magpies finished the season eighth in the 13
team PL North Group - seven points and three places above Everton.
Newcastle's final tally of 32 points from 24 games is their best
league return at this level since the competition was reformatted in
2014.
2023/24:
Off to Oz
Following Sunday's Premier League season closer at Brentford, the
Newcastle squad will fly to Australia ahead of a pair of meaningless
money-spinning kickabouts in Melbourne this week.
First up is a meeting with Tottenham Hotspur at the Melbourne
Cricket Ground (MCG) on Wednesday.
That kicks off 7.45pm local time, 10.45am
BST.
Spurs are
advertising a live stream of this game as part of their Spurs Play
subscription package. It's unclear whether NUFC will offer anything similar.
The Australian-only streaming service 10 Play
have listed live coverage of this game.
The Magpies
then move on to the Docklands area of the city where they'll face
the A-League All Stars at
the Marvel Stadium on Friday.
That starts at 5.15pm local time*, 8.15am BST and Australian-only streaming service 10 Play
also advertise live coverage of this game.
(*tickets show KO time as 5.05pm / 8.05am BST)
United's second game precedes the A-League All Star Women's team
versus Arsenal Women game.
Squad details
are awaited, but United confirm that
Garang Kuol will make his debut for Newcastle.
The 19 year-old Australian international forward was signed from
Australian A-League side Central Coast Mariners in October 2022 but
is yet to feature for the Magpies, loaned out to Hearts and Volendam.
Kuol was predicted to feature when
they face the A-League All-Stars in the second of the two games
they'll play in Australia. He played for the All-Stars in their 2022
meeting with Barcelona.
Update:
Ashley loses appeal
Friday saw three Appeal Court
judges hearing Sports Direct's appeal against losing an injunction
forcing NUFC to supply replica kits uphold that decision.
That means the dispute over NUFC's decision not to supply Mike
Ashley's company will now be resolved during a forthcoming court
case - but with the current supply arrangement now discontinued.
Update:
Ramsdale refutes rumour
In response to claims online that a
deal had been agreed between Newcastle and Arsenal for Aaron
Ramsdale, the England international goalkeeper responded by
posting "news to me" on his socials.
Championship:
Fraser off to Wembley
Following a goalless first leg, Friday
night's 3-1 home win over West Bromwich Albion earned Southampton
a place in the Championship promotion play-off final.
On-loan Magpie Ryan Fraser was in the victorious starting line-up,
with SJP old boy Adam Armstrong grabbing a brace to make it 23 goals
this season.
The Saints will face Leeds United at Wembley on Sunday week, May
26th (3pm KO tbc). The loser of that game will be the only team of the six promoted and relegated sides not returning to their previous league.
Promoted clubs:
Leicester
City Champions.
Ipswich Town
Runners-up.
Leeds United or Southampton play-off final.
Update:

On This Day in History |
19th May |
Born Or Died:
1937
Barrie Thomas born, Measham, Leicestershire. (1962-64)
Centre
forward who worked down the mines before signing for Leicester City,
only for national service to halt his progress.
Joining Mansfield Town before moving on to Scunthorpe United in 1959, Thomas
was the top scorer in the Football League with 30 goals in 22 games when
fellow Second Division side Newcastle bid a record £45,000 for him in early
1962.
The Iron opted to cash in and a deal was concluded with John
McGuigan also moving from Gallowgate to the Old Showground - while both Leeds
United and Manchester United made their interest known.
Debuting in a 1-1 draw with Huddersfield Town at SJP, Thomas first found the
net in his third game - away at Swansea - and Walter Winterbottom quickly
called him up to an England training session, although he failed to make the
1962 World Cup squad.
However his time at SJP was blighted by injury and criticism from some
fans and colleagues and while netting hat tricks against Boro, Plymouth and
Rotherham, he failed to fire his side to promotion.
Losing his place to Ron McGarry, Barrie reluctantly returned to Scunthorpe
early in 1964. His scoring touch remained despite fitness issues and as
Newcastle celebrated promotion the following May, he netted five as the Iron
beat Luton Town 8-1.
Injury ended his playing career at Barnsley, after which he had a spell
managing local non-league side Measham Swifts.
1959 Keith Guy born, Seaham.
(1975-77)
Midfielder
who appeared for Deneside Juniors, Seaham Boys and had an England schoolboy
trial.
Scouted by Tommy Jordan, Keith joined United and played in the FA Youth Cup
run to the Semi Final stage in the 1975/76 season - along with namesake Alan.
However, he failed to win a professional contract and signed for Hartlepool
United on a free transfer in 1977.
After a dozen outings at the Vic, Keith then joined local leaguers Seaham Red
Star.
1976 Brendan Markey born, Dublin.
(1995)
Striker who joined United on trial before the 1995/96 season
and appeared off the bench to replace Les Ferdinand in a 3-1 friendly win at
Rushden & Diamonds in July.
Reportedly turning down a contract offer from Newcastle, Markey continued
playing for Bohemians until a £60K transfer to a Millwall side managed by
Mick McCarthy was finalised in December 1995.
Injury problems meant he never made a competitive debut for the Lions and
within a year he'd been loaned to Dundalk and then back to Bohemians.
Later moves took him to Shamrock Rovers, Waterford United, Newry Town, a
further spell with Bohemians, Dublin City, Glenavon, Athlone Town, Dundalk,
Monaghan United, St Patricks Athletic and Malahide United.
Joining Bangor City in 2010, Brendan left a year later and announced his
retirement.
1987 David Edgar born, Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. (2006-09)
The son of former Magpies
'keeper Eddie, David was brought up in Canada where his dad had emigrated and
taken up coaching.
Early interest from Manchester United was rebuffed, but an offer from
Newcastle saw David move to England aged 13 and live with relatives on
Tyneside playing as a schoolboy for United.
After signing a professional deal in 2005, David's
debut came at Bolton on Boxing Day 2006, in a back four composed entirely of
Academy graduates: himself, Steven Taylor, Peter Ramage & Paul Huntington.
"Eddie" then memorably marked his senior home debut by
scoring an equaliser against Manchester United on New Years Day
2007.
David's first six senior outings came under no less than three
different bosses (Glenn Roeder, Sam Allardyce and Kevin Keegan).
A second senior goal came in December 2008, when he briefly pulled Newcastle
back to within one goal of Liverpool at SJP, before the Reds hit back to
triumph 5-1.
David's last game for the Magpies proved to be the season-closing defeat at
Aston Villa in May 2009 that confirmed our relegation - when he was dismissed
late on for a foul.
Joining Premier League new boys Burnley under freedom of contract,
compensation of £300K plus appearance-related payments was eventually agreed
in December 2009.
However, he found pitch time hard to come and joined Championship side Swansea
City on loan during March 2010.
Returning to Turf Moor, David was part of the squad that returned to the
Premier League in 2014 - although he wasn't retained and became a free agent.
Edgar's ex-Magpie colleague and reserve coach Lee Clark soon came calling and
a two year deal was agreed taking David to Championship side Birmingham City.
Clark departed from St. Andrew's in October 2014 and David then followed suit
the next January, agreeing a loan move to fellow Championship side
Huddersfield Town.
July 2015 then saw him loaned out by City to League One side Sheffield United,
where he stayed for the full season making 38 appearances and scoring twice.
Joining Vancouver Whitecaps in July 2016, a freak knee injury in December of
that year left David's playing future in doubt after he fell victim to a hit
and run drive whilst on a golfing holiday in Arizona.
By 2018 he was back playing and agreed a deal with US side Nashville but
played just a handful of games before departing.
A subsequent period in Canada with Ottawa Fury was equally short-lived and
Edgar was a free agent by November 2018 when having an unsuccessful trial at
the mackems.
Similar spells with Bradford City and Tranmere Rovers failed to result in a
contract offer but David was more successful the following March when signing
a short-term deal at National League side Hartlepool United.
After nine games though, Edgar left 'Pools in the summer of 2019 and joined
Hamilton, Ontario-based Forge FC for their inaugural season in the Canadian
Premier League.
He hung up his boots in 2020 and became Assistant Coach of Forge FC.
Capped by and captaining Canada at various youth international levels
including the U20 World Cup on home soil in 2007, Edgar made his senior debut
against Greece in 2011.

United's post-season tour began in stormy
circumstances, with Tommy Lang and an opponent dismissed
for fighting.
The visiting players needed the protection of police and
soldiers to leave the stadium, with their motor coaches vandalised
beyond repair.
That resulting in the
Newcastle party having to leave on foot -
policemen drawing guns to control a 5,000 crowd, some of
whom threw missiles whilst others brandished knives.
Magpie Jack Hill later claimed that the match ball was
only half the normal size and that "deliberate
kicking by the Milan team soon had our team upset".
It's recorded that the Newcastle
players walked off the field in protest after the hosts were awarded
a 25th minute penalty. They did return and the game belatedly restarted with Milan's penalty taker
firing wide.
Inter Milan were known as Ambrosiana between 1928 and
1945, with their San Siro home opening in 1926.

Gary Speed and Ian Taylor were dismissed near the end
of this one but both red cards were later rescinded. David
Ginola was humiliated by John Gregory, being hauled off
before half-time.
All was not well in the
Villa Park dressing room with Gregory spoken to by the
police after his foul-mouthed tirade on the touchline.
A disconsolate Paul Merson also made his feelings clear
using 'industrial' language in the post-match press
conference.

2009 Unsurprisingly,
United's last-ditch attempt to ensure defender Sebastien
Bassong's availability for the season closer failed and he
would serve the first of a two-match suspension against
Aston Villa.
The wrongful dismissal claim was heard and rejected by an
FA Commission - a two-match ban the consequence of
having already been sent off earlier in the season, at
Wigan.
2010 Argentina Coach Diego Maradona confirmed that
Jonas Gutierrez was in his 23 man squad for the World Cup
Finals in South Africa. However there was no place for his

Free
from the threat of relegation, Newcastle boss Alan Pardew
pledged that his side would put on a show in this final
game of the season in front of a sold-out SJP.
However, United failed to score for the third successive
home game and seldom looked like doing so, as the visitors
collected the three points that ensured Champions League
qualification at the expense of rivals Spurs.
And Pardew was indebted to the departing Steve Harper for
ensuring that roughly half of the crowd remained in their
places to give the long-serving 'keeper a fitting
send-off, sparing some support for his colleagues.
Captain for the day, Harper made a couple of useful stops
and looked visibly moved when the 37th minute of the game
came around and the whole of SJP took his squad number as
their cue to applaud him.

2016 French media
outlets reported that ex-Newcastle United player David
Ginola had suffered a suspected heart attack.
The 49 year-old was airlifted to hospital in Monaco after
falling ill after playing in a charity football match at a
golf event.
It later transpired that Ginola's heart had been stopped
for up to eight minutes and he survived only due to the
intervention of a paramedic with a defibrillator.
Surgeons then performed a quadruple bypass operation from
which he soon recovered.
